Read “The Human Engineer” – A Brand New Unremembered Short Story!

Can’t get enough of the Unremembered world? Or can’t wait for UNCHANGED to release? Well, I’ve got something for you!

Introducing a brand new short story set in the world of Unremembered!

The Human Engineer

The Human Engineer was recently published on Tor.com and is part of the short story series including “The Memory Coder” and “The Intelligence Director.” Each of these stories focuses on an important Diotech employee. I wrote them because I wanted to explore the world of Diotech through the eyes of people who are influential on the compound and who help shape Seraphina’s story, but in a less direct way. I have to say, I think The Human Engineer might be my favorite of the three. In this story, I explored the what if question of: What if science becomes too involved in the process of childbirth? And what if corporations could start capitalizing on the “miracle” of birth? What would that look like?

The story stands alone and can certainly be read on its own, but when you dive into UNCHANGED (which releases on February 24, 2015) you’ll see how the main character of this story directly influences Seraphina and Kaelen without even realizing it. There’s also a minor character in UNCHANGED (named Jase Plummer) whose backstory is essentially this story. So look out for that when you read the final book!

Hey audiobook fans! I have HUGE news! UNREMEMBERED is now available on Audible.com as a downloadable audiobook!

I’m a huge audiobook fan so this is really exciting to me. AND the audiobook is narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Julia Whelan. Julia is best known for her narration of Gone Girl, I’ll Give You the Sun, Love Letters to the Dead, among MANY others.

I’ve been listening to the audiobook and she did such an amazing job. It’s such a special experience to hear your words brought to life!

CONFISCATED: Secret Blueprints for the Diotech Compound!

Undisclosed Location in the Nevada Desert

CONFIDENTIAL BRIEF:

A team of highly-trained, covert operatives have infiltrated Diotech headquarters and stolen the secret blueprint map for the entire Diotech compound.

This security breach comes just in time for the release of UNCHANGED, the third and final book in the Unremembered Trilogy, which hits stores on February 24, 2015.

Now, readers of UNCHANGED will have a strategic advantage when reading the story, as a large portion of the book takes place within the walls of this top-secret research compound buried deep within the Nevada desert. Up until this point, no civilians have been able to step foot inside. The compound his heavily guarded with all of the latest in security technology. But thanks to our operatives, we are much more informed about what could possibly be going on inside those walls.

Here is what our brave operatives uncovered.

Our intelligence has informed us that Paul Sargent, an artist in the UK, is responsible for the design of the blueprints and we’re trying to get in touch with him for further information. However, there is a strong chance his memories have been erased, as is Diotech’s protocol.

A Week of Mondays – Week 12 (LAST WEEK!) #BehindTheBook

This is it! The FINAL week of the first draft of A WEEK OF MONDAYS! I finished the draft this week and it was sent to my editor for her comments! I just want to say, this was SUCH a fun project–blogging my progress of writing a book. And if you’ve been following the posts, I hope you found them helpful or interesting!

Date: 11/20/14 – 11/25/14

Weekly Words Written: 15,920 (6k on the LAST day! Yikes!)

Total Words to Date: 106,021 (WHOA. Cuts will have to be made!)

Number of Writing Days: 5

Average Daily Words: 2,653

Weekly Pages Written: 75

Total Pages To Date: 470 (WHOA squared!)

Average Daily Pages: 13

Average Mood (1-10): 8

Okay, so yes, the book is too long. I will take the next week to do a final read through and see if I can trim it down (Update: I managed to trim it to 103k), but hopefully my editor and I can work together to find places to trim some more. Or, maybe it’s just a LONG book. Some books just are!

I’m very happy the the final result. As you can see from the chart above I hit some rough spots around word 43,000 and word 70,000. I can’t say how “usual” that is for me because this was a book of a whole different color, being that I had to repeat one day seven times. So the rough spots probably came at different times than most manuscripts which follow a more linear timeline.

I still think the book as a whole needs some polishing but I had a blast writing it and I got some major feels as I was writing the last few chapters. It was kind of strange and surreal to write a standalone again, knowing this is it. I’ll never write these characters again! Aww…that’s a little sad!

I’ve got my fingers crossed that my editor likes it! Wish me luck!

A Week of Mondays – Week 11 #BehindTheBook

YAY! I’m back to drafting! If you remember from a previous post, I’d stopped drafting and went back to start revising from the beginning. I feared that I was starting to lose the trail of the story and I needed to start fixing up the first 3/4 of the book before finishing the last 1/4.

This week, I was back in drafting mode and it felt good to just GO again!

Plus, that means, it’s time for another CHART! (You’ll note that this chart includes the weeks where I was revising, on those days there may or may not be a bump in word count depending on which scene I was revising.) You’ll also notice a HUGE drop in my mood rating around Halloween. Yikes! I must not have been having a great week!

At this point, I’m mostly worried about length. This book is really long and it’s still going! I don’t feel like there’s anything superfluous being thrown in, but we’ll let my editor be the judge of that. Some books are just long, I guess. And I do have SEVEN Mondays to write! I’m so close to the end now, I feel like the writing this week is like rolling down a hill, it’s gained all this momentum and now I just have to let it roll on through the finish line. I have the whole last day outlined out so I’m feeling pretty good at this point. Hopefully no major surprises this late in the game. I’ll undoubtedly finish next week and then I’ll have a few days over Thanksgiving to re-read, brush up some stuff, fill in some remaining gaps and placeholders, and get this thing turned in!

I’m so close I can taste it! This is always and exciting part of the process and a terrifying part. What will the editor think? Will she hate it? Will she tell me to start over and rewrite the whole thing from scratch. YIKES!
