Ys The Fallen Preview!!

10 More days until my latest book comes out! The countdown begins everyone. Here is the quick blurb followed by the first two pages.

She has a curse. He has scales.

The Kingdom of Ys has been cursed by the Devil, a mighty dragon who seeks celestial conquest. As Princess Dana, one of the last acolytes of a forgotten church, scours the Dracon Lands hoping to find help for her people, she stumbles upon a giant egg. A handsome man named Ru, who has supernatural abilities, breaks free from the shell.

They set forth on a journey to free Ys of the curses by slaying the Devil, all the while facing Dana’s evil sister and her insidious machinations. But before the apocalyptic battle begins, they first face their own inner turmoil. Ru confronts his relation to the dragon and his contradictory tendency towards good. Dana treads the line between love and lust as she struggles to remain moral in a fallen world.

Can the curses be broken? Or will their relationship be broken first? The bells of Ys must ring.

The fight for salvation begins now!

Great news everyone! My novella Ys the Fallen is available to preorder today! The kindle version is up for preorder and paperback will be soon (maybe today?). Check it out HERE

I would really appreciate you guys taking a chance on this one. It’s better written and way more professionally done than my last book. I’ve really tried to outdo myself this time. For example, I will also be using Ingramspark to help distribute this book so it can be bought in stores. Anyways, here’s the blurb on the book.

Ys The Fallen Coming July 18th

My newest work, ‘Ys The Fallen’ is tentatively to be released on July 18th.

A christian fantasy novella. Is humanity divine or fallen? Can Ru and Dana save the kingdom of Ys and humanity as a whole?

I really wanted to release this one years ago. But that’s how it goes as an indie author – you kind of sit on books until you can release them. This book is significantly shorter than my last and better too.

I’m trying some new things on the back end when it comes to publishing also. The ebook will probably be done through amazon but I’m going to be using Ingramspark for the physical as of right now.

More info to come… Here is the cover art. Stay tuned! Keep following me on social media here https://linktr.ee/scvincent

Casino Royale Review

Casino Royale by Ian Fleming

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have always been a fan of the films so naturally, as an author myself, I was quite interested in the original book series. This is an off the cuff review and may contain spoilers. Though, if you’ve seen the movie which stars Daniel Craig, you’ll find that you already know many of the spoilers.

The story begins with a cool and collected James Bond. A double-o agent, a status given after one kills two enemy spies in cold blood, who is sent to challenge a Russian agent at a game of baccarat and utterly defeat and embarrass him. This is one of Bond’s earliest adventures and he is sent because he gambles so well. However, he is not alone, for he has the aid of a french and American spy. Nonetheless, Vesper Lynd, who works for his same British government has also been sent to assist him.

Ultimately that’s the set up. When I first tried to read this novel about a year or two ago I found myself getting lost in the technicalities of the language of gambling and decided to drop the book. What a mistake! I returned to it, hoping to give it another shot and found the writing to be excellent. Note: the gambling language can be a turn off as well as the excessive use of the french language, but it’s all superfluous. If something good or bad happens, the reader can read between the lines and catch it. Ian does not forget about the layman in this regard.

Flemming is a literary genius with the way the narrator matches the point of view of the character that leads the scene. It’s quick, clever, and shows the character without having the them state how they are.

For example, it’s very clear early on in the book that the was Bond thinks matches the way his segments are narrated – like a psychopath in a way. The mentality needed of someone who’s a spy. However, later in the book when Bond actually gets to speak, when he’s vulnerable and taken away from his defenses, you find a real person underneath it all.

The same can be said for Vesper Lynd, the other main character of the story and it’s true antagonist. Her actions and thoughts, (what little you get to see) don’t add up and for good reason. She is an unwitting double-spy being forced to seduce, gain information from Bond, and plot against his very life or else the true man she loves will be killed by the Russians. This happens all the while she is at the same time falling in love with him.

There are some very interesting male vs female dynamics explored in this novel that are somewhat tied to the time period but still echo on to this very day. Male and female spy’s tend to have difference functions and tactics and it’s because of this that leads to Bond’s folly. He’s unable to see Lynd for what she truly is for quite a few reasons:

1. He’s a man and she’s a woman. Keep in mind when this novel takes place. She’s not capable of playing the ‘spy game’. He often thinks of her as a child in many ways and only begins to love her when he, himself, is not capable of using his masculinity. If you’ve seen the movie and have seen the torture scene, yes, it’s very similar to the novels version.

2. She works for his government. His superiors have told him that she can be trusted. Why would he doubt the intelligence of his superiors?

3. Bond has, during his his recovery, fallen in love with her (as much as a man like him can). When the two are on equal terms he’s able to look past the shallowness of his previous relations, and finds a deeper one with Vesper who is his equal, he finds, in conversation and in many other ways. The same can be said for Vesper who also begins to fall in love with him and reciprocates the feelings.

In the final act of the book the two leave and share a vacation. It is here that their love meets its climax and tragic end. There is quite a difference between the movies end and the novels. The movie has a massive shootout where the novel chooses a more cerebral route.

Vesper has two loves but ultimately realizes the one she’s been protecting can’t be saved. She also believes if she were to run away with bond that smersh, the faction of the Russian government that kills rogue spy’s, would hunt them down eventually. When she finds that a smersh agent is stalking them, she ultimately makes the decision to commit suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills and mixing them with alcohol.

Despite Bond’s love for her and even his plan to propose marriage, he is unable to see what’s coming. Her strange behavior leading up to her suicide bewilders him and he doesn’t believe her claims that they’re being followed to be legitimize. Perhaps because the mission is over or perhaps he no longer see’s her as an equal, having his manhood returned to him, per se. Bond doesn’t see her suicide coming and is just as surprised as the reader when it happens.

He is awoken by the hotel staff and runs to her room. He sheds a few tears and then hardens his soul even more, finding that he wishes to end smersh for forcing innocent people to play spy. He calls London and tells them that she was a double agent, finishing the call and the book with “the bitch is dead now.”

The harshness of the final words of the novel match the over all tone of the book which questions the nature of evil, what it looks like, and what role does he, Bond, have in stopping it. The term ‘Red Indians’ is brought up to Bond while being tortured, meaning Bond had been playing a game of good vs evil. Flemming uses this term to show Bond what his goal is and what he chooses to fight for, not for country and not for necessarily for Good or evil (which Bond himself even considers), but rather for people. The innocent people who are used to commit evil. People like Vesper and he directs this anger in the last two pages of the book, although still feeling betrayed by Vesper in a number of ways.

Flemming makes clear what his characters motivators are from moral ambiguity in a clear and quick way that only a master can. The book is excellent at description. The story is on a smaller scale but it’s told in a way that feel larger than life. And when that final chapter hits and you read Vesper’s letter, you can’t help but feel a mixture of emotion. There is not a page wasted. Not a superfluous word.

5/5

Record of Lodoss War Review

Record of Lodoss War: The Grey Witch by Ryo Mizuno

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

If you’re a fan of the anime series and OVA series, you will enjoy this book. If not, and you’re a younger reader, you will probably enjoy this book as well. It’s similar to that of a ‘light novel’. I don’t have a lot of experience in those type of books, but this novel is very easy to read, so much so anyone over the age of 12 could understand it.

I really liked the anime/OVA and enjoyed the book though I felt it wasn’t as good as the animations. Apparently the book is based off tabletop RPG campaigns the author had back in the day and they happened to create their own lore later on, from my understanding.

Despite being a rather unique approach to creating a fantasy franchise, the book reads very much like a table top game rather than a novel’s narrative. From going to point A to B, it feels like a shallow attempt to string along a plot at some points, so much so you have question why the characters are doing what they’re doing, especially Parn. The book does attempt to use its narrative to cover this flaw but it’s only mildly successful.

Another issue I had is that the book is written in a kind of third person omniscient pov at best. When I say ‘at best’ it’s because the book is constantly head hopping between characters pov’s that it can be quite confusing who is even talking or thinking. Every paragraph can be a different pov.

The book does also have very similar tropes found in fantasy, naturally, as it’s based off a tabletop game. There is nothing wrong with tropes if they’re used right, but the ending you will see coming.

However, for what originality the book does have, it makes up for the books faults. It’s a fun adventure book that everyone of all ages can enjoy. If you’re looking for a light fantasy read and don’t mind some tropes then it’s worth reading. I enjoyed it.

Beggars in Spain Review

Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Objectively a good book. I found it to be a little boring in the middle with the lawfare but the novel picks up after that slump. The main character falls flat in the climax as the protagonist. She does very little and is rather not attached to the events unfolding directly. After so long a a book and investing in her character I had hoped she would have more of a role in the climax.

The book has some very good, touching moments that had me near tears. The writing was efficient and impactful. Many captivating characters are present and since the story takes place over nearly a century they come and go. However, this makes their absence later on feel even more prevalent and had me befuddled why Kress put so much time building them in the first place. I wish many of the side characters did more than they were allotted.

I liked the message the story was trying to tell and felt Kress got the message through efficiently enough. Although I do feel that said message did get somewhat lost in the weeds along the way, and the main characters sudden realization of it without having to do anything to achieve the moral was somewhat of a clumsy payoff.

Regardless, I closed the book with a smile and warm feeling in my chest.

July Update “Midas”

Just a little update on what I’ve been working on since we last talked! 🙂

I have since begun work on a sci-fi series similar to shows like Firefly and Outlaw Star. It’s adventurous and over the top pulp fun. I have finished the outline of the first book as of July 2nd and have begun writing the first draft. I have so much material here that I can make several books in this universe.

I’m considering publishing it via Amazon’s new Vella platform once I finish. Releasing each chapter on it’s own, like a episode. What do you think? Tell me on twitter.

The book is tentatively titled ‘Midas’. If you know much about that legendary tale then your mind must be going wild wondering how that can be made in a science fiction way.

Anyways, follow my socials here: https://linktr.ee/scvincent Sign up for my newsletter! Everytime I have something of importance to tell you it will be sent through there!

AND don’t forget that The Arcadian Destiny is still out and doing well! 3/5 stars on amazon. That’s pretty good if I say so myself 😉

See you later!
