Hungry Heart
(An Oberon Halloween Story)
Small-town Paranormal Suspense
Word Count: 13K/56 pages
Free on BookFunnel: https://tinyurl.com/Hungry-Heart
Cara Matthews is trouble—with a capital T. That's the one thing that pretty much everyone in Oberon can agree on—parents, teachers, cops, her fellow students, and her on-again-off-again boyfriend, Seth Cavanaugh.
Well, if you give a dog a bad name they'll probably do their best to live up to it, right?
Which is why this Halloween, after receiving one insult too many, Cara's hellbent on wreaking revenge. No matter who gets hurt in the process.
***Please note: This is NOT a Romance. This story takes place at the same time as Visions Before Midnight (Oberon, book 7—which will re-release this time next year). Hungry Heart contains many of the same events—described, for the first time, in Cara’s very distinct voice. AND with a special FOREWORD by none other than the baddest of Oberon's Bad Boys (and that's NOT in a good way!) Gregg Gilchrist***

Thankful Thursday: New Weekly Blog Post Idea.
So today I'm trying something new: a weekly blogpost discussing what's going on in my life--with a special emphasis on my writing life. And, to be more specific, what I'm feeling grateful about. I am not enormously organized, so we'll see how it goes. It might end up not being every week. Maybe it will only be once a month. I'll play it by ear.
This week, I'm feeling thankful that I signed up for Angela James' Book Boss GCD forum...I think it's a forum. Group? Platform? Membership Forum? Whatever. A Rose by any other name, ete, etc. GSD stands for Get Shit Done, by the way--and I SO AM!
Every time I've done anything with Angela it's been an incredible, worthwhile experience. Her "Rediscover Your Writing Mojo" challenge got me writing again within a couple of weeks, when I didn't think ANYTHING was ever going to break through my writing block.
This time around the topic's been branding. I've been published for TWENTY YEARS and I feel like I FINALLY know what I'm doing. Well, in terms of branding, anyway. It's been a month and a half of magic. I can't wait to see what comes next.
Another thing I'm thankful for this week: I'm putting the finishing touches on A Sight to Dream Of (Oberon, book 2). None too soon, either, since it releases on the 24th. It's edited (again) and annotated and I LOVE the playlist I put together for it. I've been listening to it while I drive to and from Wimberley (picking up and dropping off my grandson, usually). The series was originally written in the late 90s/early 00s, so that makes up the bulk of the music. So that's been a blast!
Finally, two pieces of non-writing news. I recently re-connected with one of my SILs who I hadn't spoken to in awhile (I wasn't NOT speaking to her, but we'd both been busy). We had a nice chat and it was LOVELY!
Last of all...because this happened LAST week, but I wasn't posting this last week, so...my niece had her baby! I am now a proud Grand Aunt...Great Aunt? Happy Birthday Gabriel!
What's good with you? (comment below if you feel like it!)

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Character Take Over! ~ #LoveChatWrite
This week, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop, we're asked to: "Write today's blog as one of your characters. Have them introduce themselves, share their hobbies, interests, what they think of other characters, etc."
I LOVE this idea!
And so...today I'll be handing over my blog to Gregg Gilchrist, one of the villains from the Oberon series. His story is told in book eight and...okay, hold on. I'm being corrected. Gregg is insisting that he's not just "one of the" villains, he's THE villain; that his story extends over the course of not one, but three books (seven through nine); and that he's also indirectly responsible for the entire series, starting with book one.
Oh, and also that he's never received the credit that he's due for any of that; and that that has to change.
*the author rolls her eyes* "Yeah, Gregg. Sure. Whatever makes you happy."
The point that I was trying to make before I was so rudely interrupted, was that Gregg's actual story, Dream Under the Hill won't be re-released until next year. And, did I mention that he's NOT the hero of the story? Be that as it may, I had a very good reason for choosing him to write this post, and hopefully that reason will become apparent if you continue reading until the end. Hint: there's a free, Halloween-themed novelette involved. So stay tuned!
Now, here's Gregg:
Do you believe that music has the power to harm as well as charm? That if a song is darkly intentioned enough, if it invokes demonic forces and is performed by one of the most popular and influential bands of their time during a concert at which a blood sacrifice was made several people died, that it would be possible, with all that negative energy funneling into it, for the spirit of the song to manifest itself—to take flesh, so to speak, and possess a living person?
I do.
And if the song in question is Sympathy for the Devil, if the band is the Rolling Stones, if the concert was held at Altamont and the possessed Chosen One was an extraordinarily gifted young boy who just happened to have been in attendance (having been dragged there by his feckless and irresponsible hippie-slash-groupie-slash-junkie-slash-tarot-card-reading-no-good-slut-of-a-mother)? Then I don’t suppose you’d have any trouble guessing my name. But I’ll tell it to you anyway.
My name is Gregg Gilchrist and I’m the Big Bad of the Oberon series.
Oh, I know; they’ll try and tell you otherwise. They’ll say my plans all turned to dust and that I failed in the final battle.
They’ll claim I didn’t even enter into the series until the penultimate book and then expect you to believe them when they tell you that my influence was minimal.
Me? Minimal? Ahahahahaha !
They’ll insist that there were multiple villains throughout the course of the series and that I wasn’t even the worst of them.
They're wrong on every count.
The truth is, it's ALL down to me. I own this series. Without me, it wouldn’t even exist!
I was the reason Scout Patterson left town; the reason Sinead Quinn left town; the reason Lisa Larson never made it home. If not for me, Marsha Quinn’s psychic abilities might never have emerged. Lucy Cavanaugh might never have met her annoyingly clueless husband or given birth to Seth—her misbegotten ass-wipe of a son.
And Nick Greco would have probably ended up in jail, as he should have done. It would have been no more than he deserved; and it would have suited me right down to the ground.
Because better him than me.
Even the so-called author of the series has admitted that once I showed up (unexpectedly, because that’s where all the fun’s to be had!) at the end of book seven I wrested control away from her and twisted the final two books out of shape.
At least, that’s how she sees it. She's wrong too, of course. And I think she should just say ‘thank you’ and shut up.
One of my biggest achievements, the most important thing I did, and the reason that I’m here, right now, talking to you, is that I picked my own heroine. In fact, you might even say that I created her. Like a silk purse from a sow's ear.
As I'm sure you're aware, most villains don't get a heroine to call their own. But I'm NOT most villains. I'm not most ANYTHING. So, to hell with that!
At the end of book seven, on Halloween night, after taking care of business, and doing what I’d come here to do, I stood in the darkness and took a good look around.
It had been a while since I’d last been in Oberon. I needed to take its measure, to see what fun there was to be had here. And that’s when I found her: my sweet fallen angel, my little lost lamb, all mine to cherish and corrupt.
She was being totally wasted in her assigned role — an unloved minor character; the drug-addicted, cheating ex-girlfriend of the aforementioned ass-wipe. Oh, and, by the way, they’ll also try and tell you that that I’m wrong about Seth. That the poor boy is actually the much beloved, much beleaguered “hero” of books four, five, seven, and nine. But I ask you, does that seem at all likely?
In any case, it struck me immediately that, the way things stood, Cara was never going to get the ending that she deserved. She was set to exit the series that very night. Her final scene had already been penned. The “plan” such as it was, was to leave her right where she was when I found her; heartbroken. Alone. No friends, no family, no home, no hope…
I ask you, where’s the romance in that?
Well. I couldn’t let that stand; now, could I? So, I swept in and rescued her. Because, as the song would have it: “every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners saints” and far be it from me to disagree.
Thanks to me, Cara shortly became the subject of a worrisome little cliff-hanger ending and was henceforth quickly elevated to heroine status.
And yes, OF COURSE, there was pain involved—a lot of it, as it happens. And that was all thanks to me as well.
Oh, don't act shocked. I told you I was the villain. Where did you think this story was going to go?
But every prize has its price, does it not? And I certainly think I deserved to receive SOMETHING for all my efforts on her behalf.
Now, here’s the point of this whole post. Sadly, you won’t be able to read our story, in its entirety, for another year. Cara doesn’t appear at all in the series until book four. And I’ll continue working in the shadows, the great and powerful man behind the curtains, until book seven.
BUT...not for you all that pointless waiting. No, not for lucky you. Clever you. The you who understands that for the next THREE WEEKS ONLY you’ll be able to download a creepy little Halloween-themed story featuring my very favorite juvenile delinquent (along with a brief, but special, cameo appearance from moi) that you can start reading immediately.
You can find the story here: https://www.tinyurl.Hungry-Heart
And the playlist (to add to your enjoyment) here:
https://www.tinyurl.Hungry-Heart-Playlist
And, just in case I have somehow not yet made this abundantly clear: This is Not a Romance. It’s a little bit horror, a little bit suspense. It takes some of the events of book seven and re-tells them in Cara’s unique voice and from Cara’s very, very alternative perspective. It’s also being offered to you completely FREE of charge.
Well…as to that, maybe it's free. But I can't know that yet, can I? Since I don't really know you. Yet.
For you...there very well might be a price to pay. In sleepless nights. In troubled thoughts. Especially if you end up falling in love with her as I did and thence find yourself, in the ensuing months, worrying yourself to distraction, wondering what harm she might be coming to at my hands. And you'd be very right to do so. That's not an empty threat. I promise.
But you like being scared, don't you? And I—noblesse oblige—am happy for the opportunity to serve you in this manner. Be afraid. Be. very. afraid.

This story re-examines some of the events that take place in book seven in the Oberon series, Visions Before Midnight except that it's told entirely from Cara's (first-person, present tense) point of view. It's definitely not a romance. It's a creepy little story that ends in not-quite-a-cliff-hanger and it's the perfect spooky read you need this Halloween!

Romance Writers Weekly ~ What's Your Morning Routine? ~ #LoveChatWrite
This week, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop, we're asked to share our morning routine.
The thing is...I don't really have one. I mean, aside from feeding the animals, making coffee, turning on my computer and deciding what to do first--and even that's not set in any kind of stone.
Up until a couple of months ago, I had two dogs. Now I have one. She's been getting a lot more walks, but still not every day if I've got a busy morning. Sometimes--like this week--we'll also be caring for one of my grandpuppies. So, I'll be back up to two dogs. Some days, one of the neighborhood cats will come scratching on my door hoping for food. But they're as unpredictable as I am! Until last week I was also caring for a sick hen. She's gone now, so that part of my routine has altered again. Sometimes we've got my grandson staying with us. Those mornings suck, if you must know, since neither of us are morning people. But that's a different story--and an entirely different routine. One that usually includes stopping on the way back from his school to charge my car.
There are always a lot of things that need doing and I try and get as much of them done in the morning as possible, so that I can spend the rest of the day playing...by which I mean writing.
Now, hop on over to Brenda Margriet's page to read her morning routine. And don't forget to check out her book, TOO GOOD FOR WORDS !

Available now in print and digital formats. “An intriguing mystery complete with long-lost loves, twists I didn't expect, mysticism, murder, and great multi-layered characters…set in a magical small town. What's not to love?” “This is one story you don't want to miss reading! I become totally immersed in this intriguing mystery.” “The characters that make up the small town of Oberon California are beautifully eccentric. The two main characters of Scout and Nick were exactly what a real couple should be yet so many authors shy away from.”

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Book Review ~ #loveChatWrite
This week, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop, we're asked to remember that writers are readers too and to "Write a review for a book within your genre."
The book I'm reviewing today is one I just finished reading--Hexed in Show, the latest in Gretchen Galway's Sonoma Witch series. This series is right up my alley: romance, mystery, suspense and witchy goings-on in a magical small California town. Sounds just like my Oberon series, doesn't it? And, by the way, the first in that series, Scent of the Roses is re-releasing today! Woo-hoo! Check below for details.
Hexed in Show continues the adventures of Alma Bellrose. I really liked this story--Alma is confident in her power, comfortable in her friendships, secure in her allies. The danger to her doesn't feel as personal as in some of the earlier books. Spoiler alert: that's so ironic! Also, there are magical garden installations that I desperately wish were real.
I am a notoriously picky reader when it comes to anything I feel I have a proprietary interest in. And the San Francisco Bay area (in particular the North and East Bay) definitely falls into that category. Nothing breaks through my suspension of disbelief faster than real-life details that fail to correspond with my own memories and experiences. This has been the case with a lot--dare I say most--of Galway's books. But I couldn't find anything that irritated me with this latest book. This is something I particularly appreciated because it's been two long years since the last book in the series, and I've been jonesing for a hit.
Now, hop on over to Brenda Margriet's page to read her review. And don't forget to check out her book, TOO GOOD FOR WORDS --releasing in just over two weeks!

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Books to Movies ~ #LoveChatWrite
This week, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop, we're asked the question: "If one of your books could be made into a movie, which one would you pick and what actors would you like to play your characters?"
The answer is ALL OF THEM. I would love to see any book or any of my series made into a movie or TV series. Since I'm currently working to re-release Scent of the Roses--the first book in my Oberon series--I'll go with that one. I think Blake Lively would make a great Scout Patterson and Jensen Ackles could totally nail the part of Nick Greco.
How easy was that? lol!
Now, hop on over to Jill Haymaker's page to find out what she has to say about this tricky question. And don't forget to check out her book, Christmas in Montana Pines , now available for pre-order.

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Similar Authors ~ #LoveChatWrite
This week, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop, we're asked the question: "Tell us what other author writes books and stories most similar to yours and why?"
Wow. I wish I had an easy answer, but I really don't. My very favorite editor compared my vampires to Anne Rice on multiple occasions and I NEVER tired of hearing that! A critique partner once compared my small town contemporaries to Jennifer Cruisie--I didn't hate that either. But the problem is, I write in multiple sub-genres and that tends to complicate things.
I feel like I modeled my career on authors like Elizabeth Peters and Jayne Ann Krentz because they wrote/write both contemporary and paranormal.
But honestly, I don't know. I think writers are the WORST at figuring things like that out. We're too close to our own work. There are authors I WISH I wrote more like, but that's not the same thing at all!
Now, hop on over to Jill Haymaker's page to find out what she has to say about this tricky question. And don't forget to check out her book, Come Home to Love .
Come Home to Love is free for your kindle today through Friday.
Riley Beckman has spent the last six years trying to be the perfect single parent to her daughter, Ava. The result of a one-night-stand with a handsome cowboy, Riley didn’t even know his last name when he rode off into the morning sunrise. By the time she discovered she was pregnant, all she could do was make the best of the amazing gift she’d been given. She hadn’t needed a man to establish a happy home for herself and her daughter.
Justin Thorne, known to his friends as JT, has been a nomad since leaving home at eighteen. A cowhand, he’s traveled ranch to ranch and state to state, never staying in any one place long enough to put down roots. Still there was that one night and one girl he could never quite forget. Romance Writers Weekly ~ Favorite Movie ~ #LoveChatWrite
This week, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop, we're asked the question: "If you could see one movie again for the first time, what would it be and why?"
Well, that's an interesting question. My first instinct was to say something like Practical Magic or Field of Dreams--because I love them both and they feel like the kinds of story I write. Or maybe one of Lawrence Kasdan's films from the 80s--The Big Chill or Silverado, because they're just perfectly filmed movies--and they both have big ensemble casts. Also similar to my books.
But I think I'm going to go with Star Wars--the ORIGINAL film (AKA Episode Four, A New Hope). I don't know what it was that made that film such a cultural event. I didn't know then, either. But I do remember lining up for hours to watch it--over and over and over again.
It had such a huge impact on society, and as I said, I never quite understood why. But I do think it would be fun to watch it again WITHOUT knowing everything that came after. Without knowing about the body-shaming issues Carrie Fischer had to deal with while making the films; without knowing about the accident that would change Mark Hamill's face. And without the weirdness that has filtered in thanks to the subsequent films. I'd really like to watch it again without thinking, "Is Luke really going to kiss his sister?" "Did Darth Vader just torture his own daughter?"
There's a lesson there, I think, for authors of series. And the lesson is: THINK THINGS THROUGH BEFOREHAND. Because, otherwise, ICK!
Now, hop on over to Jenna Da Sie's page to find out what movie she'd like to watch again for the first time.

Romance Writers Weekly ~ Childhood Crush ~ #LoveChatWrite
This week, on the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop, we're asked the question: "Who was your childhood actor/actress crush?"
Wow, I feel like I'm really gonna be showing my age with this answer. I didn't really have a lot of childhood crushes--or any, really. I actually recall being told I had to choose one, because all my friends, cousins, etc. had them and I did not. Eventually, I chose Bobby Sherman (not exactly an unpopular choice). I think there might have been a poster involved?
For those claiming he was a singer rather than an actor, he starred in the TV show Here Come the Brides. He played the youngest of three brothers--Jeremy. The three brothers all had names that started with J (Jason and Joshua being the other brothers).
Fun Fact: my husband and his siblings all have names that begin with J as well.
Jeremy was also the name of the character Robby Benson played in the movie of the same name. I recall thinking he was pretty cute, too. Years later, when I was living in Los Angeles, my family (husband, son, and I at the time--I think this was before my daughter was born) went to brunch at Gladstone's in Malibu, which used to be my favorite spot, before they changed ownership and their menu, and Robby Benson was at the next table with his wife and daughter.
Anyway...this has been a delightful trip down memory lane, and I'll be taking another one with the re-release of my Oberon series starting next month. See below for details. I'm super excited to be revisiting my very first (and possibly my favorite) series.
Now, hop on over to Leslie Hachtel's page and find out who her childhood crush was. And don't forget to check out her book, Stay With Me .
