how to plan/outline a novel? how much should i work? i really want to write but dont know how to figure it out
This is one of those questions to which there is no magic answer. I know that’s frustrating to hear, but it’s also the truth. There are a thousand different ways to outline, and different methods work for different writers. But what works best for me is some combination of note cards, what I call the‘question’ method, and the Rule of Six. Let me explain what I mean by that.
Note cards: This is the simple part. When I have an idea for a story I write‘scene cards’ for each scene which I know nee...

resource for procrastination
if you’re anything like me, working on a computer is a dangerous thing. i’ll get distracted by everything - that one email i should respond to, all the pictures of my dog, tumblr, and so on. I recently discovered an amazing resource to stop that.
it’s calledwriter’s block, and is free to download!
when you open it, it shows this screen, where you can choose either a time limit or word goal
then when you start, it opens a document that fills the entire screen like this
and you can...

Larry Wilmore speaks to 11-year-old activist, Marley Dias, who has collected about 1,000 books with Black girls as main characters after she became frustrated with always “reading about White boys and dogs” in school.
I, as a white boy with a dog, can attest to her last statement.

Imagining Backstory
by Kimberly Appelcline
Few stories start at the beginning. As discussed in the first article in this series, The Elements of Good Storytelling, most stories start somewhere in the middle of events, when things have already gotten interesting, just when a crucial turning point approaches. And this means that a whole fictional world of events took place before page one of the story. “Backstory” is the history behind the story, the past behind the settings, chara...

From the brink of extinction: elephant seals stage remarkable comeback
In the 19th century the Northern Pacific Elephant seal was thought to be extinct until a small population was discovered on an island of Baja California in 1892. Since then, the species has staged a remarkable comeback which was greatly accelerated by protective measures adopted by the U.S. and Mexican governments.
The recovery is especially evident on the beaches of California’s Año Nuevo St...

What about Seven Tears at High Tide?
“A charming and sweet twist on the selkie legend. Morgan, a half-human half-selkie and Kevin, an Asian American bisexual (and proud) human, are wonderful characters.” - LGBT-YA Reviews
“Seven Tears at High Tide is a magical story with so much heart. Though heavier topics such as homophobia and hunters are addressed, most of the characters are sweet, accepting, and so heartwarming. Kevin and Morgan’...

I had a great time at LTUE this week! In addition to some fantastic panels and great people, the massive book signing event (picture above is from before– I was too busy to take pictures during!), it was a wonderful experience. Some highlights include this beautiful selkie scout badge from @mackincaid, designed by @ignitethesky, getting to see my book at the Barnes and Noble store, meeting author Danielle Harper ( @ddoubleparkd ) and some really excited readers. A+ event, 10/10 would do...
