Crowdfunding: Hidden Youth: Speculative Stories of Marginalized Children

by Bart Leib

“Three years ago, we launched a Kickstarter to fund an anthology of historical speculative fiction, telling the stories of people who had been marginalized throughout history. The overwhelming success of that project - both the initial fundraising and the critical praise and sales upon release - showed how important it is to tell these stories, how badly they are needed.

Now we want to c...

A few snapshots from my first bookstore event! Thank you so much to Barnes and Noble for inviting me to your Teen Book Festival to be on this amazing young adult panel with so many incredible authors! I had such a blast meeting people and signing books.

Thank you Senator Sipes, Vivian Lautenslager and Barnes and Noble for organizing this incredible event and to Livia Blackburne, B.T. Gottfred, Michelle Gagnon, Jen Kelin, Ann Stampler, and Gretchen McNeil for an amazing panel.

“Stories exist independently of their players. If you know that, the knowledge is power.
Stories, great flapping ribbons of shaped space-time, have been blowing and uncoiling around the universe since the beginning of time. And they have evolved. The weakest have died and the strongest have survived and they have grown fat on the retelling … stories, twisting and blowing through the darkness.”

- Terry Pratchett, from Witches Abroad (HarperTorch, 2002)

(ノ^ヮ^)ノ*:・゚ It’s REAL it’s REAL!

Welcome to Andover… where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is merely looking to beef-up her college applications when she stumbles upon the perfect (paid!) internship—only it turns out to be for the town’s most heinous supervillain.

On the upside, s...

My #whitewashedout story, a short-short story by Cecilia Tan

ceciliatan:

Here’s a story I wrote in 1993, in the MFA program at Emerson, in Pam Painter’s short-short story class. It’s actually an autobiographical piece about the disconnects between my “identity,” “ethnicity,” and “heritage.” It’s a very American longing, I think, not unique to POC, but it felt like in the wake of the #whitewashedout tag going around Twitter today, that in this story I had already said everything I would contribute to the tag. So I decided to post it:

“Learning the Alp...

One of my favorite art museums in New York City is The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met). Its permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art.

When it comes to a fine suit, it never hurts to be as informed as possible. Knowing what type of fabric you prefer will help not only in regards to ha...
