How Learning to Cook Korean Food Helped Me Grieve (and Heal)

How Learning to Cook Korean Food Helped Me Grieve (and Heal):

deducecanoe:

I’m so tired of white guys on TV telling me what to eat. I’m tired of Anthony Bourdain testing the waters of Korean cuisine to report back that, not only will our food not kill you, it actually tastes good. I don’t care how many times you’ve traveled to Thailand, I won’t listen to you—just like the white kids wouldn’t listen to me, the half-Korean girl, defending the red squid tentacles in my lunc...

Important Bury Your Gays rant.

God, this is so accurate and well said.

Seriously, as a writer, one of the things that pisses me off above and beyond the bigotry and discrimination inherent in this trend is the arroganceof every writer going“yes, I know this is normallybad, but…”

No. No buts. Your writing is not so unique and speshul that it can claim to exist in a vacuum independent of society. You are not the exception.

Especially not this year.

“A large part of the story deals with her expectations about what it means to be ordinary and what it means to be extra-ordinary. This is a theme that will speak strongly to the current generation. What happens when you try as hard as you possibly can but you still can’t achieve what you intend to do? How do you rebuild who you are when you fail short of your parent’s expectations?”

freshofftheboatdaily:

A lot of people are like, “Oh, Jessica’s a stereotype. She has an accent.” I don’t want to propagate the idea that an accent is shameful, because that is the idea that has been propagated by white Hollywood culture since forever. It is simply a product of immigration, and our story is a story about immigration. It’s called Fresh Off the Boat. It’s not being used as fodder. (X)

You can preorder the book here, and I loved her last book, “Seven Tears at High Tide.” @authorcblee

Welcome to Andover, where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is me...
