HUSH by Karen Robards

“Jeff told her they were after him. And now that her ex-husband is gone, Riley Cowan wishes he’d told her who they were. The police ruled Jeff’s death a suicide, but Riley has her doubts. The evidence is staggering! Her billionaire father-in-law is in jail, accused of one of the biggest financial frauds of all time. His once-powerful family has lost everything. Hundreds of millions in investors’ money is still unaccounted for. And ever since the scandal broke, a rash of mysterious deaths has hit the firm. Someone is trying to send a message. Riley is sure of it. Especially when she discovers that she’s next on the killer’s agenda.”

Riley is shocked and terrified when she finds her ex-husband dead, an apparent suicide. Jeff had sent her a text to meet him at the family’s mansion, but when she got there, it was too late. He must have had information about the missing money from his father’s investment firm. In a panic, she grabbed his cell phone, hoping to find clues that might save his family from financial ruin. Jeff, her ex, was a womanizer and heavy drinker, but she still loved his family, in spite of their divorce. And his family still loved her. She wanted to do all she could to save them.

Riley knows Jeff could not have killed himself. Why would he ask her to meet him if that were true? She had to find out, knowing that she was probably in danger, too. So many in the firm had died suddenly, and Riley had to discover what Jeff knew before she was dead, too.

Riley doesn’t know that she is being followed by FBI agent, Finn Bradley, who also happens to be the epitomy of tall, dark, and ruggedly handsome. But she soon finds out he’s “tailing” her when Finn comes to her aid after she is brutally attacked.

The mystery is slow to unfold, but there’s plenty of action, and the sexual tension is intense, as Riley and Finn are drawn to each other. She knows he has a job to do and questions her judgment of whether to trust him or not. She doesn’t want to fall into bed with him, only to find out he is using her.

The story is exciting and hot, and the sexual tension builds so slowly, you can hardly stand the smoldering lust that practically melts the pages. I questioned Riley’s judgment at times, but eventually understood her motives. You’ll be holding your breath as the passion level between Riley and Finn enters the red zone! Prepare to be kept on edge until the very end! Hush is a worthy read for any romance-mystery fan!
