Saturday

My semi sabbatical/ mini vacation / week off from work is coming to an end. I managed to complete a few of the things I wanted to do on this week and few things that I didnt' expect. Despite the long turn around trip I completed yesterday, I feel good.

Friday- Completed a 800 mile round trip in 20 hours to help my daughter rent an apartment near her college. Managed to stay on diet.
Thursday- Got my hair "done", went to the Oakland RV show and looked at the new and used travel trailers, visited my parents for a few hours.
Wednesday - Listed one thing for sale on ebay, offered to sell some dishes to replacement.com, cleaned out front hall closet.
Tuesday- Took waterbottles to recycle, had car washed and detailed, mailed some books for paperback swap.
Monday - Took the kids' to their doctor's appointments, grocery store.

Goals for next two days.
Do manicure on self.
Get son stuff for football. Mouthpiece, tee shirts, girdle.
Catch one or more of the stray feral kittens who keep wandering into my backyard.
Stay on diet.
Walk.
Finish reading book started.
Finish reading critique partners chapters.
Package two more books for sending out to paperback swap.

Vacay - Day 1

It's not going as well as I hoped. I am so frustrated with my teenage children. All they want to do is watch television and eat. I am seriously considering going back to work later this week. No one appreciates me staying home.

I took the kids to their doctors appointment first thing this morning for their annual physical. They are at the point where the pediatrician asks me to step out of the room so that she can ask them some super secret questions about their health. Daughter said doctor asked if she needed birth control. She said "no". Son wouldn't tell me what the doctor asked. Personally I don't care.

Neither of the two kids would help me clean up the house when we got home. I wanted to get it done so we could go on some adventures this week.

Managed to clean out the front coat closet. Husband has too many jackets and coats and doesn't want to get rid of any. He also has a bad habit of stuffing bags filled with papers into the closet. One had a $50 gas card inside of a birthday card he'd received. "Why isn't it it your pocket or drawer?" *Shrug* He says he knows were it was but it was thisclose to being in the trash.

Pulled out some stuff to sell on ebay but can't find the camera. No one knows where it is or wants to help me look for it.

Listed some books (21) for trade on paperbackswap.com website. It would be cheaper and easier to give them to the thrift store but I will get credit for some books that I want. As soon as I listed the brand new books, I had eleven requests for the books.

Filled three bags with stuff for the thrift stores. It's on the lawn waiting to be loaded in my car.
Washed some clothing. Managed to clean out some of my computer cabinet. Still need to clean out the filing cabinet filled with partially written manuscripts.

Tomorrow I will take the water bottles to the recycle and stuff to donate. Will try to make it to the gym and then go get something good to eat.

Need to list a desk on craigslist or nextdoor.com website.

1 Week Sabbatical

I've got a week off from my full time job. Yeah! I need this so much. I was planning to go to the RWA conference but decided to stay home with the kids and just get some rest.
Okay, I'm probably not going to rest that much since I've got a list of things that I want to do and places I want to go.

Things to do
List a few things on ebay to sell
Clean my closet
Clean out front closet
Take stuff to Thrift Town store
Print pictures for scrapbook expo crop coming up in two weeks
Pick up some scrapbook tapes
Pick up a few markers
Purchase kids back to school items
Write something for submission to critique partners
Organize pages to complete at scrapbook crop
Apply for new jobs
Offer assistance to daughter who is looking for an apartment
Purchase self help career book
Kids orthodontist 2nd and 3rd opinions
Exercise
Diet
Find leadership/ supervision course/ workshop
Clean out desk cabinent area
Hair stylist

Places to go
Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland Hills
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
Mom's house
Out to dinner with hubby - Possibly Roys in San Franciso

Chores
Wash and Detail Car
Take waterbottles to recycle

I'll check back in a week to report how it went.

Took my kids to an Orthodontist on Thursday for a consultation. He was in San Francisco and is head of the orthodonist department at the University of the Pacific Dental School Orthodontist program. Dr. Boyd is very friendly but he wanted $6995.00 for his services for invisialign braces. I have two kids. It was $4995. if I went to the clinic where students would be seeing the kids and he would be supervising. It was $3995.00 for regular braces at the clinic.

Sigh! Very expensive and although they have payment plans I would have to come up with about $1500 cash for each child up front and then the payments for the cheapest option was $86 per child. Doable but still. I am going to look around her for some options.

After we left the orthodontist I decided that I wanted to go to Golden Gate park for a picnic and to see the California Academy of Science.

My son enjoyed it. My daughter had gone there on a field trip with one of her classes a year or so ago and she was less impressed. She likes stage shows and I am going to have to find some kind of play or something to take her to.

We stopped at a brand new super Safeway grocery store in the Fillmore district and bought sandwiches, chips and soda from the deli. My son wanted to stay in the car because he didn't want supermarket sandwiches.

Anyway, we made our way to Golden Gate Park found a parking space in the undergraond parking lot and found a bench to eat our sandwiches. My son loved the sandwiches. It was about 2:00 p.m by this time and the museum / academy closed at 5:00 p.m but the girl at the information booth said that we would have time to see most of the place. I ended up buying a family membership because it allowed us to come back throughout the year. I am always looking for things to do with the family on the weekend and this would be a nice option.

Take a look at this mini trailer / playhouse.  http:...

Take a look at this mini trailer / playhouse.  http://littlevintagetrailer.com/2012/06/featured-trailer-72-pink-shasta-compact-for-sale/

I've got a new obsession. It's Mini or Micro or small vintage campers. I want a tiny vintage trailer to call my own. It could be my writing office/ scrapbook room/ doll house/ personal retreat. I've got just the place to put it in my backyard. Even better  I could take it on the road for a glamping trip.

Here's another pink trailer that is just precious. This is the 1972 Shasta Compact Travel Trailer. It looks similar because it is decorated in the similar shabby chic style but it's a different trailer.  http://littlevintagetrailer.com/2012/07/67-playmor-vintage-camper-for-sale-adorable/

This blog has a bunch of cute pictures of vintage trailers. Turn your volume down on this site.

Here's what it looks like when it's not painted pink.

I mentioned getting one to my husband and he said "No". I didn't ask if he thought it was a good idea I just told him that I was thinking about getting one. I've got space on the side of the house to store it or I could move it all the way into the back yard and make it playroom off the side of the deck.

Love the idea of Glamping. Camping with a glamour.

I share my idea with my son and he said that it would be his hangout. Sigh!
I agreed he could live in the travel trailer in the backyard and I would makeover his room as a my office.

NEW MICRO TRAVEL TRAILERS
I'm a little concerned about the cost of refurbishing these old campers. I did find that hey made some new ones which could possibly be decorated for cheaper than buying and renovating a vintage trailer.

My History with Scrapbooking

Sometimes I forget how fabulous I am. I forget that I have traditions, talents and experiences that are valuable,  important and special to me.  I've been following the blog of Kimberly Wilson who runs a yoga studio in Washington D.C. She hosts yoga & art retreats throughout the year and she recently went to France and held a seven day retreat and then traveled through France with her beau. She posted several days a week along the way and part of her thing is making journals and practicing tranquility. Check out her blog at www.tranquilitydujour.com. Anyway, I kinda wished I could go next year but it is so expensive and I have a daughter in college and blah, blah, blah.

Like I said, I forget that there are things that I can do and have done locally that are within my budget and just as refreshing as going to France for weeks at a time.

I am especially in need of recharging after the hectic few months, I had putting together the meeting for this past Monday.

CROP
One of my favorite ways to recharge myself has been to scrapbook. Crops are retreats or events where scrapbookers work on their scrapbooks. The word crop comes from the term used where you cut or crop away any unnecessary parts of the picture to put it into your scrapbook. Caution: dont cut away everything. 50 years from now we want to see the telephones, cars and televisions your family had in the house. Some crops are held in scrapbooking stores for a few hours one night a week. Other crops are held over a weekend where a scrapbooker can work non-stop on completing an album. I was lucky enough to be able to participate in a few crops. I haven't had as much time to do it since I went back to work full time but I have been able to invest in a number of getaways over the years.

Scrapbook Expo
Every August, I attend the Scrapbook Expo in Santa Clara, California. I stay at the Hyatt Regency and go to the crop on Friday or Saturday night. Sometimes I go both nights. My younger daughter went with me for several years. She competed in some of the youth page contests and won. The last time we went in 2009, I drove down after work on Friday. Scrapbook Expo had oversold the Crop tickets and we got there after people had spread there stuff out all over the tables. We couldn't find a place to sit down. The staff set us at a side table which actually turned out to be the volunteer break table. I was angry cause there was some chocolate or food on the table and it smudged on one of my pages. Two other ladies were placed there as well. They were from Southern California and they were disappointed as well because they had pre purchased tickets as I had but the event planner were letting people spread out so there weren't enough tables. After that, I pledged to buy an entire table when I went in the future. The past two years, we went weren't able to go due to some other family events. Now that we are able to go again, I thought it was going to be an annual thing for my daughter and I but this year she decided that she didn't want to go. She is entering high school and I guess she has outgrown it. It's funny because women at the crop would always ask me how I got my daughter to be interested in scrapbooking. http://www.scrapbookexpo.com/

When my older daughter was younger we went to the East Bay crop sponsored by Scrapbook Expo at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. I think I went to that event three or four times over the years. I volunteered the first year, took classes my second and attended the crop night the third. these crops usually run from 5:00 p.m. until 12 midnight. There weren't any hotels nearby so I just drove home at night.

The cropping retreats that I will describe below that are held at hotels are usually open all night long.

I am planning to go this year by myself. At first I wasn't going to go at all but then I remembered that I like scrapbooking and I have alone before. Instead of renting an entire table, I bought only one crop ticket so I will have to share a table with someone. Good opportunity to meet someone new.  I registered for three classes/workshop throughout the day. The workshops give you an opportunity to learn some new techniques, try some new products and they always give you a page kit to take home.
I'm looking forward to this mini retreat. I was going to go to RWA convention but I couldn't justify spending a week away from home and the kids when I have so little vacation time per year.

Creating Keepsakes University
I have attended a Creating Keepsakes University (CKU)  as a volunteer on year. I think it was held in Santa Clara or San Jose, CA. They didn't really give us anything and I remember standing next to the registration table when I arrived and there were all these tote bags filled with giveaways that they gave to the paid participants. I could have so easily picked on one up and kept it as a token of my volunteer efforts but I didn't. All the participants had already registered so these were extra but I was a good girl and didn't snatch one. I remember thinking they would give us one but they didn't do a darn thing for us. I'm not even sure if we got the kit from the class we helped set up for. It is probably just a well. I like my Scrapbook Expo or private crops better.

I read somewhere that they barely made money on those event after they had to pay for the hotel and magazine staff coming in. Even with the sponsors, I think the conventions are an expensive endeavor. CKU used to be the big thing. When I subscribed to the magazine, I always wanted to go to their events. They were rarely held in California. I think once it was held in Anaheim. There also was the Creating Keepsakes Conventions. I never had the opportunity to attend one of those. http://www.scrapandpapercorner.com/events/cku/2012/index.html
http://www.scrapandpapercorner.com/events/ckc/index.html

Gotta Crop Retreats
My favorite crops were with an organization called Gotta Crop in Lodi, Ca. Gotta Crop was a small independently owned scrapbook store owned by two women, Michelle and Marianne who loved to crop. They held some local crops near their store in Lodi but they also held out of town crops every year. I went to one in Palm Springs at the Wyndham Palm Springs Resort. That was the greatest. The crop room was open all night and day. They brought a table full of tools. There were contests and prizes and giveaways. they sold stuff. I think I have a picture of myself in the pajamas contest winner. I love Palm Springs. I took the train down and didn't have a car but other than that the trip was the greatest. I'll never take the Amtrak train again. I think there was a bus halfway because the train doesn't go all the way. Sigh!

Gotta Crop eventually closed as did many of the other small stores. For a while scrapbook stores used to be the only place to buy the special paper and delicate embellishments for scrapbooking. Then Michaels, Target and the Dollar stores started getting scrapbook stuff and it was the beginning of the end for the small specialty stores.

Croppin' Away Scrapbook Retreats
I went to a crop in La Quinta Resort and Spa outside of Palm Springs with another organization called Croppin Away. http://www.croppinaway.com/index.html It doesn't look like they are sponsoring any events right now but they were a very nicely organized group. I had a great room and there were lots of classes offered during the 3 or 4 day event. I flew down to Palm Springs, rented a car and had my own villa room at La Quinta. I think that was in Fall of 2007 or 2008. Anyway, flying was much more convenient. The resort was beautiful. I have to admit that as much as I like a mommy get away, I am so lonely when I am there in the hotel room by myself.

Creative Memories
I started scrapbooking with Creative Memories. They sell the best archival quality books and papers through sales reps. I love their strap hinge albums. Their albums are truly THE BEST. Whenever I run into a consultant at a crop or at the expo I usually purchase items from them on the spot. I don't know any local consultants but when I run into them at an event I do support them. http://www.creativememories.com/

QVC
For a while Creating Keepsakes was selling scrapbook kits and embellishment kits on QVC. They had a number of todays special values that included books with paper and beautiful pieces to decorate the pages with. I got a beautiful K&Co set which I used to do my middle daughter's baby book.

FAVORITE TECHNIQUES
In terms of scrapbooking, I never branched out from making pages and books. I have taken classes on card making and stamping but I never got into any of those. I subscribed to magazine and books to get ideas but I stuck with basic pages except what I got from classes. I do a lot of color blocking. A lot of basic stuff from Creative Memories class of 1995.

I do love embellishments and still have a GIANT tote full of goodies collected over the years. I went through a period when I loved brads. I bought a bunch from Queen& Co in the shape of baseballs, footballs, baseball gloves, Halloween figures. I have papers and ribbons and buttons and stickers. In fact, I think I've even donated some stuff to the kids school and thrown stuff away. Right now my tote is in the living room waiting for the upcoming Scrapbook Expo in August. I pulled it out of the back of the closet to make room for clothes and get more organized. I would love to meet up with someone to exchange materials with.

DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING
Okay, to be honest, I'm not really into digital scrapbooking. I've slowed down a lot with the scrapbooking since I don't print out as many pictures as I used to. Social media sites such as Facebook allow people to post their pictures online and keep them in some sort of archival format. I guess Facebook will be around in the future. Who know? Now that I think about it, I want to keep putting the pictures into books as well as keeping them in some sort of  digital format.

I took a class at Scrapbook Expo a few years ago about digital scrapbooking. They gave out a disc with sample software. You could make the actual pages with virtual embellishments and colored background and then print them on a 12X12 Epson printer. Then you could put the page in a book. I think Epson was sponsoring the class. It just wasn't something that I was interested in at the time.

I love the idea of putting together digital art work but I love the actual paper scrapbooks. I am willing to go to digital e-books but I like my paper scrapbooks. Creating paper scrapbooks with the pictures also gives me some time away from the computer. I put so much time in at the computer at work and at home trying to write. I can't image spending my rejuvenate time in front of the computer either.
Come to think of it, I get more writing done in long hand.

SCRAPBOOK BASICS
The basics of scrapbooking are you sort your printed pictures by occasion and put your pictures into an album with archival safe tape or glue. Add embellishments to help tell the story or decorate the pages. Finish by journalling something about the event or the pictures. Heading, dates and other information help to make the story complete.
I've done two of my children's baby books. I did their kindergarten through about third grade books. I 've done their sports books.
I have some old books with my wedding pictures (snapshots not professional pictures) that probably should be put in archival quality books.
I have tubs of my oldest daughters baby pictures that need to be put in books.
So many of my pictures now are still trapped in computer. The kids (now teens post them to Facebook pages) but I haven't been as good about putting together scrapbooks as I once was.

RECOMMENDATIONS
I do recommend buying high quality stuff. I bought some books of tear out paper from I don't know where that I used on my son's baby books. Those pages have all faded badly. I bought some colored construction paper from somewhere probably same place as the paper and that has faded as well.

SEI papers seem to have faded and I purchased those at the Scrapbook Expo. I think I got the pages from a class kit. It was a really pretty dots collage and it has lost so much color. I used to really like the SEI paper but looking back now...*shaking my head* I'm glad that I didn't buy more.

Like I said above, I love Creative Memories products. Queen & Co brads are very nice. I haven't tried their papers or kits.

I've purchased a few kits from the Expo. Kits are pages that include all the components already cut out. All the scrapbooker has to do is follow the instructions and put them back together and add their pictures.

Take classes and go to conventions. You can see alot of the new products and see them demonstrated, then decide what your specialty is. Everyone can't do everything. Become a specialist in something. For a while I was sewing fabric onto paper before it became a fad. Then I started seeing it at the expos.
I never got into using the chalk or the metal but it is all over the place.
Figure out what mediums you like to work in.

SCRAPBOOKING AS THERAPY
I definitely think scrapbooking is therapy. Looking through pictures gives you an opportunity to look back at your accomplishments. Completing pages and books gives one a sense of accomplishment.

FUTURE/ WISHLIST
One of these days, I will have a dedicated scrapbook/ crafting room/ office so that I can leave my artwork out on the table. Now, I have to put stuff back after I work on it.
I'd love to get one of the cricut machines to cut out letters and shapes but then I would need to have a space to work.

I'd love to go on a crop cruise. I see those offered every now and then.

Since I live in a small house, its such a hassle to take things out and put it back again. Anyway, I love the crops and I have to get organized before the August 10th event.

Diets! Cravings!

Well, I made it exactly 10 days eating clean before my craving for a italian salami sandwich on a french roll kicked in. I fought the urge for one day and then happily trotted across the street today at noon to indulge. Chatted with the woman who made my sandwich. Purchased the latest National Enquirer. Sat in the sun for half an hour and enjoyed the sandwich.  Had to kick off my shoes when I got back to my desk because I could feel my feet swelling up. Sigh!

Of course, I'm not hungry for dinner and will probably go for a walk later. I actually feel better than I did two days ago when I was dieting. Have a lot more energy to straighten up around the house this evening. Always able to write more on a full stomach.

I hate reality shows!

I'm tired of how the popular reality show are portraying black love.

In particular, I can't stand Love and Hip Hop, Basketball Wives or Real Housewives of Atlanta. I'm still waiting to see how the show Hollywood Exes goes. Sigh!

First of all, few if any of the housewife are actually wives. I'm not sure why all they seem to do is fight with each other. We're not all obsessed with platform stillettos and designer clothes. Okay, I do like nice things and a cute pair of shoes but come on. We don't all drink designer cocktails all afternoon. We work out of the house, we volunteer, we better ourselves. We care for our children and support our men and each other. We have talents that we share with our community. We write, paint,  dance, sing or teach.

The truth is we do have long lasting loving marriages. We are beautiful and classy and educated and love our men. We have a beautiful, educated and classy First Lady of the United States and we all should aspire to be as classy as she is in public. I wish that people wouldn't support these shows that portray African American women in such a poor light.

This is how a REAL Basketball Wife does it. I love the family shots. Follow the link to see Juwan and Jenine Howard Renew their wedding vows.

Cruise Vow Renewal Flowers

I haven't blogged much about the vow renewal that my husband and I did last fall. We renewed our vows on a cruise ship on our 21st wedding anniversary. Only our little family present. We bought the vow renewal package from the cruiseline. Most cruiselines and many resorts offer them now. If you are unsure check with the wedding department. Our package included a private room on the ship, a huge two layered cake, champagne and cider, commorative glasses, music ( I brought my own CD) and the ships Captain renewed our vows. There were also staff present to cut the cake, serve the drink, play the music and a photographer to take pictures.
The cruise ship offered flowers with the package but I decided to purchase silk flowers ahead of time and brought them with me.  I got these small bouquets from afloral.com and wrapped them with the tuile and ribbon that I bought at the fabric store. I made similar bouquets for my daughters who were the attendants. Their flowers were burgandy and ivory. After we returned home from the cruise, I put the silk flowers in a small vase on the entry table in my living room. I am able to enjoy them daily.

This was my bouquet. On afloral.com the bunches are described as 9" small ranunculus clutch bouquet in purple, yellow, citrus and tangerine. They are small. You can sort of see them in my hand in the picture but it was a renewal and I didn't need much. They were regularly less than $10 each at afloral.com. I think when I got them they were on sale for even less.
The Captain asked me were I got my flowers. I guess he didn't recognize them as part of the cruise package and he thought they were real and I guess you can't bring real flowers on the boat or take the real flowers off the ship once it's been out of the country. The photographer was asking me where I got them as well.
I bought the marble in the bottom of the vase at Micheal's. I was going to do some sort of sand ceremoney for the family but the heart shaped vase I bought was too big, I couldn't fit it into my suitcase and I already had so much luggage. The colored sand kind of expensive. I wanted a bunch of colors. Anyway...

Below is one of my girls bouquets. This is two bunches of the flowers for one fat bouquet. I bought four total and wrapped them with the same tuile and ribbon. These are also ranunculus flowers. When we returned home, I put the bouquets in a crystal glass on the fireplace mantel. Those small votives next to the flowers were also supposed to be part of the sand ceremony but as I mentioned above I decided not to do that part of the ceremony. The funny part was I forgot all about it at the renewal. My husband was the one who said "See, we didn't even need to do the sand ceremony." I didn't even know he was paying attention to me when I was talking about doing the sand ceremony and then cancelling it because I couldn't carry the stuff.
This is a close up of the cake topper. There are a few bouquet jewels (fake diamonds) in a few of the roses but I didn't happen to get a picture of them. When I first came home from the renewal, I kept the topper in the box but then I decided to use the flowers. So this center piece is on my kitchen table all the time. I bought the cute shabby chic cupcake stand on eBay and the topper fit perfectly there. It slides around and one day I'll get some of that two sided tape to keep it in place but right now it does what it needs to do.

My husband and I jumped the broom on our renewal. Of course, I couldn't fit a full size broom or even one with a shorter handle in my suitcase...so when I found this super cute wedding wisk broom I purchased on the spot for $15. It was on etsy.com. It was pre-made and the colors weren't in my color scheme but actually they matched my bouquet (with the purple and yellow). The broom is hanging on the back of the front door. I read somewhere that it is supposed to be good luck.

This picture is some custom floral head pieces with clips. They are basically flowers that the artist glued beads, pearls, shimmer on. They actually are very pretty.  I purchased a whole bunch from a girl on etsy.com. Three burgandy and three beige. The girls each wore one at the renewal and then never bothered with them again. I hung them on the chandelier in my bedroom. There are also some silk flowers clipped onto the light that I purchased other places.

I guess the morale of this story is.. if you want to invest in a few goodies including flowers for your vow renewal go ahead. You will be able to use the silk flowers again as decor around your house. There are tons of places to purchase silk flower bouquets online, so look around and see what you can find.

I think the vow renewal package was worth ther $395 price tag. If I was to try to put something together at home, I could easily have spent that much or more for room rental and a cake. It was fun. I bought matching dresses for my daughter's at an outlet for $15 each. I found my dress on eBay (brand new with tags) for less than $20. Of course the girls never want to wear their dress again but the fabric is nice and I will either sell on eBay or make something out of them.

I'm not sure what I'll do with my dress but I might have an opportunity to wear it again. I will post pictures of my dress, shoes, and hat later.

Have fun and enjoy you vow renewal.

Nesting! AKA Happy Homemaking!

Okay, I confess. I have been in a homemaking/ entertaining/ feather the nest mood. Earlier this week I shared the bakeware items I purchased from QVC and eBay. Today I want to show you the vintage glassware and mod era entertaining set.

I especially want to share because when I purchase something or become obsessed with it, I search the internet and it is hard to find info on the fabulous stuff I love.

I went through a few months earlier this year when I was obsessed with this mod era entertaining stuff from David Douglas Genie Server sets. I bought three of the genie servers.

The black one is actually a copy that says GENI on the bottom. I think it was made by an AVON company which bought the rights to manufacture and sell David Douglas' designs after he sold.

There were a variety of cups available with the server. Some of the cups were coffee cup styles. The green one pictures are a little larger than the beige cups. I love the golden design on the tray. It is also printed on the stopper tops of the bottles.

The golden cups are like ice cream cups/ no handles. I there is matched a golden carafe for sale on ebay but I have enough of these.
The genie server is insulated and can hold hot or cold liquids. It came with a funnel that can be used with coffee filter to make coffee. I had to search on eBay for a while but eventually I found one. I haven't got the gold color carafe but I did find some cups for a good price. I use the green and beige carafe. I the black one to my daughter to take to college. I'm not sure she is as in love with them as I am.

I'm not sure what accalac is but it is something like plastic. I think these were made before microwaves so I don't even consider putting them into the microwave. There are some bowls, trays, and other pieces for sale on eBay
Here is a copy of the order sheet that was included packaging of new items. I did purchase one genie server with the hang tag, box, funnel. Here is a link to an article David Douglas. It includes some information from a guy who claims to be David Douglas' stepson.http://modish.net/david-douglas-6641My other favorite household collectable is vintage glass.

Back in the 50's snack sets or luncheon sets were big. I got started collecting Jeannette glass in Dew Drop pattern when I picked up the snack set with cups at the Oakland Museum White Elephant sale.
The plates are dew drop shaped and the cups have an art deco style handle. There are sunburst patterns on the plates and cups with small bumps which are like dew drops.

Then I found the punch bowl, cups and platter on eBay. So I purchased that for a great price. There is a lazy susan base but it is way up in the cabinet so I couldn't get it down to photograph it. The punchbowl can be used as a serving bowl or salad bowl or chip bowl.

Then I found someone selling more plates and cups on eBay. Here is the whole set out on a red table cloth for 4th of July. There are a LOT more punch cups but I didn't bother to get them out of the closet.
To the left are the sugar bowl with top and creamer. There are also some smaller bowls and pitcher available.

I love shabby chic style. The flower on top of the cupcake holder is the cake topper from my vows renewal ceremony last fall. I bought that cake topper from a woman on etsy. com. I thought I could make more on my own but by the time, I bought the flowers and put it all together it would cost more than just buying from her.

In this final picture, I pulled out some goodies that I will use to decorate for 4th of July. I will move them outside on the table for a small picnic or breakfast Saturday or on the actual 4th.
I highly recommend collecting red items. They can be used for throughout the year for Valentines Day, 4th of July, Memorial Day and of course Christmas. Ooooh, I almost forgot. I've got a fabulous gold table cloth and another red one with stars that I have to go dig out.
The funny thing about all of this, when I entertain it's usually just my husband and our three kids. They are used to eating on fancy plates and seeing the house decorated with holiday appropriate colors. My sister is having the big family BBQ with our parents, our family , her in laws and I don't know who else is coming.

Happy 4th of July!

Week in Review.

I've been working so hard at my office. My head swirled all week as I tried to organize meeting rooms, run reports from a State database, reconcile numbers and prepare presentations. Its a busy time of year for me. Unfortunately, I don't have administrative assistance or anyone to delegate busy work to. I've been downing gallons of coffee and more than a few chocolate croissants.  I have a massive headache today from the caffine withdrawal. Ugh! The headache is making it difficult for me to work on my writing, which is what I want to do. Le sigh!

This week, I have received a few treasures from eBay. During stressful times, I reward myself with goodies from the online auction site. I am currently working on adding a few pieces to my Temp Tations Presentable Ovenware set. The pattern I own is named Provance. My hubby purchased the rectangle and oval piece with top several years ago from QVC. The price was right. Shortly thereafter, QVC and Sara McConnell the creator of Temp Tations discontinued this pattern. Most of what they sell on QVC now is Old World pattern. Anyway, I managed to pick up this square piece with plastic lid on eBay this week. The trivet basket was missing the handles. * Shrug *

I also got two Temp Tations Provance bowls this week. The seller of the bowls wanted a FORTUNE for shipping but she she was local so I contacted her through eBay and we met up. I am very happy with the bowls.

There were two other pieces that ended earlier this week on eBay that were in the Provance pattern. Those were squares that had tops like the soup turrin pictured here. I bid but not high enough. The pieces went for $66 plus shipping. I regret not purchasing them but I'm sure the similar pieces will show up on eBay again. Below is the picture from eBay.

Here is the picture of one of the homemade pizzas I made this week. It's pepperoni, mushroom, green and yellow peppers, tomotoe, onion, jalepeno, cilantro, and mozerella cheeses. I baked it in my green Rachel Ray Bubble and Brown cookware.
I purchased the Rachel Ray Bubble and Brown cookware on QVC as well but I don't think I will get anymore. I have several pieces but they don't come with tops or trivets and I am running out of storage room. I made three lasagnas yesterday. One was a vegetarian (spinach and mushroom), one meat (ground beef and sausage) and one was mixed. I wish I'd taken a picture.

I posted a request for a critique partner on RWA National.org forum. I've exchanged pages with two women and will see how it goes. I've really been needing a critique partner to take my writing to the next level.
I've got a manuscript that is contracted with Liquid Silver Books that I need to pull out of the files and finish editing. Le Sigh! I plan to get that out by the end of the weekend. I hope that the publisher is still willing to work on that with me.

Hubby decided to repaint the deck this weekend. So we had to clear it off last weekend so that it could be cleaned and scrapped. I have been without my favorite tranquil space and I have to say that I miss it. Can't wait until I have my area set up again to relax and unwind.
