Why Your Son is a Rapist… and Your Daughter is a Victim

What if I said that a woman is incapable of managing her sexuality, of choosing whether or not to have sex? What if I said a woman is a victim of her partner even if she consents to intercourse? What if I told men that they are rapists even if a woman not only engages in sex, but actively elicits sex?

You would be mad, right? You would call me all kinds of unhealthy names, accuse me of suppressing women.

But that is exactly what has happened in two recent reviews of Liam’s Bride. One reader has stated “He should have never punished her in this manner while angry. I agree with another review in that this was more like rape and it doesn’t matter if she enjoyed it.

What?

It doesn’t matter if she enjoyed it? The subject of punishment aside, because that is completely subjective, why don’t we just take this one step further and say that women are incapable of choice and because of this, women should either remain virgins or be remanded to the custody of their fathers. The father will then determine when and if the daughter is capable of making the decision to engage in sex. The couple will be questioned after the act to ensure penetration met the strict standards of the father. No hair pulling, no spanking, no sex talk. Ladies, if you request he fuck you harder, you are out of luck. He will go to jail. Hell, let’s go back to draping the woman in a sheet with a hole cut out over the vagina, just to make sure the female isn’t subjected to any degradation. Maybe the man should wear a mood ring.

We already live in a society where women are ignored if they say, “No.” Now we are ignoring women when they say “Yes?”

“Don’t hurt me,” she said, allowing a tremble in her voice, almost ruined by a husky note of anticipation. She didn’t know how much longer she could play her part. She wanted him, was close to demanding he fuck her.”

Writers are told not to respond to reviews. Period. Let the readers have their say. But some topics are so hurtful, so insidiously harmful, that a response is not only required, but necessary. Responsible.

Women, we cannot bandy the word rape around like a handy byword whenever we encounter sexual practices that are not our own. Rape is forced sexual intercourse in which an individual has NO CHOICE and DOES NOT WANT the encounter. In Liam’s Bride, Meredith says to her mate,

“Oh, Liam,” she breathed, stifling a giggle, rubbing her soft breasts and belly against his hard torso, the shifter heat of his body nearly scalding. “Punish me. I lied to you- I deserve to be punished. I want to be punished.”

Some punishment, huh? Jeeze, if only my husband would ‘punish’ me like this a little more often. In fact, I have engaged in ‘angry’ sex with my spouse.

I AM NOT A VICTIM. I WAS NOT RAPED.

Some readers have decided that because Liam was ‘angry,’ the sex was rape. Some readers have decided that even though Meredith, the ‘victim,’ fully consented and enjoyed- even demanded his sexual attention- that she was raped, and her choice to engage in consensual sex didn’t matter. At all.

These readers, unintentionally or not, have relegated Meredith to the role of victim and taken away her right to choose. They have taken away one of the main pleasures between couples- the ability to vent and release tension through sex. The ability to fight, disagree, and make up afterwards. The joys and pleasures of having a strong man come to you for solace, and to demand in return sexual satisfaction in the manner that pleases you.

“He roared, a primal sound of dark male satisfaction, having taken his woman for his pleasure and providing ecstasy in return. Branding her, binding her body and soul to him in the most primal way. Only Liam could make her body sing; she would never be able to touch another man again.”

For victims of rape, I apologize. I apologize that your heinous experience has been marginalized and reduced to the same category as consensual sex. I apologize that our culture doesn’t understand, truly, the difference between consent and coercion. And that men are also the victims of this misunderstanding.

And I feel sorry for our sons who have sex with a woman who eagerly invites his attention- only to be told later that it was rape.

Judge for yourself.

I am thankful for readers and their reviews, positive or negative. There is a school of thought that an author is NOT ever allowed to respond to a review. If the reviews were simply about story line, characterization and grammar- that’s fine. But the reviews are accusing me, as a woman who has emerged whole and victorious from spousal abuse in a previous marriage, of writing something I find morally reprehensible. Rape is not sexy. Consent IS sexy. Whether we agree with the consensual act or not.

Everyone has a right to their honest opinion and perspective. Books should be a source of discussion and debate. They should inspire emotion- if they don’t, authors haven’t done their job. Books can be a valuable springboard from which we can pick apart issues in society that need to be addressed. The reader has a right- and I have a right.

I am exercising my right. Please respect my rights. Please respect a  woman’s right to choose.

Norelle and Liana at war…

Setting aside Bear Princess for now because it isn’t due for several weeks and I need to focus on Liana and Norelle. Liana is waaay overdue for another installment of her story (see Mates of the Fae) and Norelle is a noisy bae who won’t leave me alone because she doesn’t like Liam getting all this attention. So I’m about to jump back into my Fae world and my Clan Conroy world. Liana’s 4th story will be another novelette, but it should deal with a little more of her pregnancy and her self-denial. I mean, she still hasn’t read the damn contract all the way through. Ignoring a problem never makes it go away, girl.

I’ve talking more and more with the people who enjoy my stories and it is the steam in my engine. Sometimes I write things with an intent to touch the heart, sometimes I don’t- and it touches my heart when you tell me I did something right, that resonated with you. I try to write real people with real problems and real relationships while still giving escapist fantasy. Hopefully I’ll get better at my job, and keep producing stories worth the attention you give them.

I love to hear from you, and Facebook is a blast. (I just discovered it, go figure.) Friend me or drop me a line anytime.

What I’m working on now…

Well, after I wrap a story I usually need a drink.

Minty hot cocoa, of course.

I take a day to catch up on my reading (yes, a single day- you thought writing was easy? Readers are rabid. I know. I’m constantly hounding my favorite authors to write faster) and then dive right in. Sometimes it’s easy to dive right back in, like when I’m working on a series. There isn’t any emotional loss.

Right now I’m working on Norelle’s story, and on another line of Bear shifter romances set in the same omniverse- the Royal Bears. Those are turning out very nicely. I hope to drop the first two by the beginning of November. But back to Norelle.

Yes, I realize you all thought Boden’s story would come next. It can’t though. He needs to grow up a bit. So I’m gonna let that boy toy stew awhile and take care of Norelle, who has just been having a really bad few weeks.

If you aren’t on my ARC list and want to read Norelle before it goes live- in exchange for an honest review, yo- then sign up.

If you would like t be involved with the actual writing process, friend me on Facebook and let me know you’d like to join the super-secret Beta Howl’s group. There you will be able to read and pick apart my final drafts. I will observe and mostly keep my mouth shut.

I love to hear from readers, feel free to email me or say hi on Facebook.

One quick question: For Norelle’s cover, do we still want to see a super-hot almost naked man? Or do I let Norelle take the cover spot light? Comment or email me.
