Two, Three, Many Americas?

Since the posting of "Becoming Two Americas", many readers have argued that we actually are becoming three or more Americas, while others cling to the dream of becoming One America again. The purpose of the original posting was not to propose breaking up the country, but to focus progressives on strategic questions of how to live and work through the political polarization paralyzing the country for the foreseeable future.

Defend De Blasio Now

A full-page of revelations in the New York Times that Bill De Blasio was an active organizer in the Central American solidarity movement and before that, an outspoken opponent of nuclear power in high school, should hugely excite the progressive base in New York politics after a long period of Republican rule. De Blasio didn't leave his radical youth behind either; in the present day, he is a leading critic of stop-and-frisk and the massive economic inequalities dramatized by Occupy Wall Street.

Obama Decision on Egypt Pending

The Obama administration is treating funds earmarked for the Egyptian military "as if the coup prohibition applies" but without saying so publicly, according to Washington insiders. But they will be forced to make a decision soon about whether to disburse the funds, about $1.5 billion, or close down the US military aid program in response to the coup and new dictatorship.

Letter From Activist, John F. Bradach

"Tom:

I enjoyed your NPR interview, today.

Last Wednesday and Thursday I made a sign and stood on Pioneer Square in Portland.  As you said, this and millions of other Americans writing to Congress and talking to pollsters moved things in a way they have not moved before.  Our President of change and his sidekick may yet regain my respect.

I had a Marine Nephew,Corporal Travis Bradach-Nall, killed by a U.S. Cluster Bomb in Karbala Iraq on the day Bush said, "Bring em on!"  His Mom, my sister Lynn Bradach has spent the last decade working to have the U.S. sign on to the International Convention to Ban Cluster Munitions.  http://www.stopclustermunitions.org/news/?id=4242

I had hoped we might get her in talk to President Obama and Secretaries Kerry and Hagel when this serious Syria business erupted."

John F. Bradach protests military action in Syria in Portland, September 2013.
