The beauty of St Martin

It is a real blessing to be here on St Martin! Each morning I go for a walk along the long causeway that links to the airport. Recently there was a famous regatta / boat race held here. There are still hundreds of boats in St Martin! There are some amazing yachts, sailboats, and other craft.

20160310_103404 20160310_103429 20160310_103456 20160310_103502 20160310_103542

We live on the right side of this hill, about 1/2 way up. We have a great view of Simpson Bay and the airport.

IMG_5787

Not all boats make it out alive….

IMG_5788

There is one way in and out of the bay: via this bridge. Even the largest yacht somehow can make it through this narrow passage. However, it does cause a lot of traffic problems, as the bridge goes up every hour to let boats in and out. During the regatta the bridge would raise for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes to let the line of boats in or out of the bay, then close just in time to open again at the top of the hour! What a mess!

IMG_5789

But we get used to timing our comings and goings based on the timing of the bridge.

The weather is almost always nice here. When it rains (and it rains almost every day), it rains at night. So during the day it is always warm and sunny.

Tough way to serve the Lord, eh?

Transfers are here!

This week is transfer week and we have two great missionaries leaving us: Sister Lamb and Elder Merritt.

Sister Lamb, a Sister Training Leader, has completed her mission and is on her way home.

Elder Merritt is being transferred to St Lucia.

We will have two new missionaries here sometime this week… In the meantime, Sister Call is working with a local member for a couple of days until her new companion arrives.

In view of those leaving us, we held a very special District Meeting. After everyone had a chance to report on their week, Sister Lamb was given the opportunity to teach all of us some of the important things she has learned during her time serving in the West Indies. It is a tradition we have on St Martin: those leaving for home teach us what they have learned during their time serving the Lord.

20160308_101526

Elder Cox and Elder Ashcraft share how their week went, and also gave one example of one possitive thing they have learned from their companion.

Elder Whipple and Elder Merritt discuss their week.

20160308_102358

Elder Jones and Elder Stevens talk about their week (see Elder Jones’ smile? he never leaves home without it!)

20160308_102515

Elder Sabin and Elder Moux discuss their week. I had the opportunity to go out teaching with them this week–it was wonderful. They are great teachers! We shared a gospel message and committed a wonderful woman to set a date to be baptized.

20160308_102649

Sister Lamb and Sister Call give their weekly report.

20160308_103358

Then it was Sister Lamb’s turn to teach all of us. Here are some highlights of what she shared with us:

Be obedient. Follow all of the rules laid out in the White Handbook every missionary carries with them. She told a story about how Pres Mehr asked all the missionaries to rate how obedient they were, on a scale of one to ten. Most thought they were about an 8. They were encouraged to find a way to get that number to 10. Be a TEN!
This is the Lord’s work. We need to humbly ask the Lord for His help and guidance. We want to be sure we are following His will, and not our own.
Go the extra mile. God often places all of the blessings at the end of the second mile, not the first!
Do many good things of your own free choice, rather than waiting to be commanded in all things. She quoted D&C 58:26-28:

26 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.

 27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;

28 For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.

Be cheerful. She read several scriptures that talk about the joy that comes from serving the Lord, and that we should be happy and cheerful while we serve. People notice us. They notice if we are happy or sad or misbehaving. As we are servants of Jesus Christ and serve as examples of the lifestyle we seek others to emulate, we should be cheerful.
She again emphasized the importance of finding joy in the work by reading D&C 123:17:
17 Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.
Happiness comes from living the Gospel. If we do our part, God will do His part.
Member relationships. In order to move the work forward–in order to be successful– we have to enlist the help of the local members. The first step is to get to know the members in your area. The second step is to persuade the members to go out teaching with you. Once they can participate in a teaching appointment they will feel the spirit, they will understand the joy that comes when you see people’s lives change for the better, and they will be motivated to aid you in your work.
Last, but not least, is Gratitude. Always be thankful for the blessings you receive. Always thank the Lord for the gifts and blessings that come to you and your family.

The Resurrection Test Answers

Here are the answers to the Resurrection Test:

THE RESURRECTION QUIZ:

What is the resurrection? (Alma 11:43, 45; MD 637)

The body and spirit inseparably connected, perfect and eternal.

Who was the first person resurrected? (I Corinthians 15:23; 2 Nephi 2:8; DBY 374)

Jesus was the first person resurrected, he is the first fruits.

What happens to those brought back to life before Christ’s resurrection (Lazarus)?(DBY 374)

They are still mortal. They must die again, then be resurrected.

What caused men to die? Why do we need the resurrection? (DS 2:258)

Because of the fall of Adam, all men will die.

What ordinance is symbolic of the resurrection? (GD 101)

Baptism (we are buried in water, then brought up out of the water).

Does everyone get resurrected? (2 Nephi 9:22; Alma 11:42, 44; AGQ 1:38)

Yes. Everyone, good and bad will be resurrected.

What would happen to us if we were not resurrected? (DS283)

We would become devils (spirits without bodies), angels to a devil.

Are even the wicked Sons of Perdition resurrected? (DS 2:25)

Yes. Everyone who had a mortal body will be resurrected.

What if they don’t want to be resurrected? (DS 2:10)

Everyone will die and be resurrected, whether they want to or not.

Do translated beings (i.e., Moses, Elijah, Enoch, etc.) need to be resurrected?

(AGC 2:47; DS 2:300)

They are mortal, but changed so that their lives are extended. However, they must die and be resurrected, although it will occur in a ‘twinkling of an eye’.

How did Christ overcome death? (AGQ 3:207)

Christ had the power to overcome death because he was the literal Son of the Father in the flesh. From Mary Christ gained the power to die, from Heavenly Father he gained the power to live again.

Why did Christ have to shed His blood? (AGQ 3:207)

Christ shed his blood, reversing the consequences of the fall of Adam.

Question: “Why did Christ have to shed his blood in the atonement to relieve us of the

responsibility of the fall?”

Answer: The reason that the blood of Christ had to be shed is because Adam was without blood before the fall. The blood came into his body afterwards. Therefore, it was  necessary that the blood which came by the fall should be shed in the atonement. For the    life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an            atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.            (Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, Vol. 3, p.207)

How did Christ obtain power over death? (DS 2:259)

Christ obtained his power over death from his Father.

Will our resurrected body still look like us? (DBY 372)

Yes. It will look exactly like we look now, only without the imperfections.

Will our resurrected bodies be perfect? (Alma 11:43, 45; AGQ 1:42)

Yes. However, if we choose, we may keep some marks received in this life (Christ kept the marks   of his crucifixion after he was resurrected and appeared to the Nephites)

Are resurrected bodies perfect the moment they come out of the grave? (DS 2:292)

No. Bodies come up out of the grave exactly as they were laid down, then they are perfected.

If the body is perfect, and will never die, will we have use for the organs of the body?

(DBY 375)

We will need all of our organs, just as we do now. Their use may change and/or be ‘enhanced’ after the resurrection, for our benefit. For example:

Eating: we will not need to eat in order to exist; but eating food will permit us to retain our ‘glory’ (like the sun, our glory gives off physical matter that will need to be replaced)

Digestive organs: eating corrupted food on other ‘lesser’ worlds

Lungs: talking

Eyes: sight

Ears: hearing

Touch: senses

Reproductive organs:  The ability to have spirit-children

Is a resurrected body a physical or spiritual body? (I Corinthians 15:44; DS 2:284)

It is considered a ‘spiritual’ body. Though made of flesh and bones, because it has spirit fluid running in its veins rather than mortal blood, it is considered spiritual.

What is the difference between a mortal body and a resurrected body? (DS 2:284)

A mortal body has blood. A resurrected body has spirit-fluid running in its veins.

Is a person who dies as a child, resurrected as a child or an adult? (AGQ 1:59; GD 24;

DS 2:54, 293)

As a child. The body comes out of the grave exactly as it was laid down (a body cannot grow in the grave). Then the child will grow to its adult stature. Many righteous parents will be needed to raise these children during the millennium!

Who raises the children after they are resurrected? (GD 247)

The child’s parents, if they are worthy. Children without righteous parents will be raised by righteous people while their unworthy parents wait in spirit prison.

What kingdom do children obtain? (DS 2:54)

They automatically obtain the Celestial Kingdom.

Do children automatically obtain the highest degree in that kingdom? (DS 2:54)

No. Children must make the same choices we do in order to progress to the highest kingdom.

Do animals have a spirit? Are animals resurrected? (AGQ 2:48; DS !:62)

Yes. All animals have a spirit. All animals will be resurrected.

Do plants have a spirit? Will plants and trees, etc., be resurrected? (AGQ 4:129; DS 2:281; MD 642)

Yes. All living things have a spirit, so all living things will be resurrected.

Is the earth itself alive? Will the earth die and be resurrected? (AGQ 2:106; DS 1:77, 88; DBY 375)

The earth is alive, and has a spirit. It was baptized (in the flood), will die, and be resurrected.

Do we gain or lose intelligence in the resurrection? Why? (D&C 130:18-19; AGQ 2:74)

Neither. Our minds/intelligence will be exactly the same after we are resurrected. The only   difference will be that we will be able to remember our pre-mortal life.

Do we continue to learn and progress after the resurrection? (DS 1:300; DBY 397)

Yes. Though resurrected, we have not obtained the intelligence to become Gods. There is much more to learn and even more ordinances that must be performed before we become exactly like our Father in Heaven.

Can resurrected beings have children? (AGQ 4:146)

Yes. All of our physical characteristics will function after the resurrection.

Do all resurrected beings have the ability to have children? (DS 2:287)

No. Only those who have obtained the highest degree in the Celestial Kingdom will be able to have children.

What type of children do resurrected beings have? (DS 2:68)

They have spirit children. They will be born with spirit bodies like we had prior to coming to the earth to obtain our mortal bodies.

Do all resurrected beings have families? (DS 2:287)

No. Only those in the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom will live as families. However, those of a higher order can visit those of a lesser order.

What is the path the spirit travels from pre-mortal life to the resurrection? (GD 241)

1) The pre-mortal spirit receives a mortal, physical body; 2) At death the body and spirit separate and the spirit goes to the spirit world (either Paradise or Hell); 3) The spirit is reunited with the body in the resurrection, never to die again.

What #3 judgments do all spirits go through? (Abraham 3:25-26; Alma 40:11-13; Rev. 20:12)

Pre-mortal (determines what time and place we are born)

At death (to determine whether our spirits go to Hell or Paradise after death)

The final judgment (when we receive a Kingdom: Celestial, Terrestrial, or Telestial)

Where is the spirit world? (DBY 377)

The spirit world is a part of this earth. It is here, all around us.

Who resides in paradise and who resides in hell? (D&C 76:73, 84; TPJS 366)

The Telestial reside in hell. The Celestial and Terrestrial reside in Paradise (all who will be worthy to live during the millennium are in Paradise).

Who holds the keys of resurrection? (DS 1:128)

Christ, and those to whom that power is delegated.

Who will raise our bodies in the resurrection? (DBY 373)

Christ will raise the Celestial. All others by those delegated to resurrect the others.

Are there “classes” or types of resurrected bodies? (DS 2:287; MD 641)

Yes. Celestial, Terrestrial, Telestial, plus many other types, classes and levels.

What are these types of bodies based on? (D&C 88:28-32; DS 2:287)

Our bodies will be resurrected based upon the level our spirit has obtained.

Can a resurrected being travel through solid objects? (DS 2:288)

Yes. Christ appeared in the upper room. Moroni appeared in Joseph’s room.

How many resurrections are there? (John 5:29; DS 2:297; MD 640)

There are two main resurrections: the just and the unjust, the righteous and the wicked.

When is the 1st Resurrection? (D&C 88:96-97; DS 2:297)

At the Second Coming of Christ.

Who is ‘caught up’ to meet Christ first? (I Thessalonians 4:16; D&C 29:26)

The Celestial spirits living in Paradise will be resurrected and will greet Christ first. Then those still living in mortality will also be taken up to meet Him.

When is the 2nd Resurrection? (DS 2:297)

At the end of the millennium.

What is the timetable for the resurrection? Which kingdom is resurrected first?            (D&C 88:96-102; DS 2:296)

Celestial:          Morning of the 1st resurrection (MD 640) Church of the Firstborn (those who already have their temple ordinances completed)

Terrestrial:       Afternoon of the 1st resurrection (MD 640)

Telestial:          Evening: the end of the millennium and beginning of 2nd resurrection (MD 640) The wicked are resurrected and Satan is loosed!

What is the ‘Church of the Firstborn’? (DS 2:297)

Those who have their Calling and Election Made Sure and will enter the highest degree in the Celestial Kingdom.

What are temple ordinances for? (DS 2:176; DBY 397)

To prepare people to enter the Celestial Kingdom.

Can someone who is worthy to enter the Celestial Kingdom be resurrected without having their temple ordinances performed? (DS 2:176; DBY 397)

No. Everyone who will enter the Celestial Kingdom must have their temple ordinances performed before they are resurrected. That is why there is an urgency to completing temple work now!  Those who merit a Celestial body and don’t have their work done will have to wait to be resurrected until their work is done!

Will everyone have their temple ordinances performed? (DS 2:176; DBY 397)

No. Only those who are worthy to enter the Celestial Kingdom will need their temple work done.

Do our pain and sufferings in this life give us claim to a better afterlife? (Hebrews 11:35, 40)

Yes. Without the pain and suffering we endure in this life, we could not be made perfect!

When people die in the millennium, will they go to the Spirit World? (D&C 43:32; 101:31)

No. They will be changed, or resurrected, in a ‘twinkling of an eye’

Zone Conference

This weekend Pres and Sister Herrington flew in to hold a Zone Conference on Saturday. It was really great! We began at 10 am, lunch at noon, and ended about 3 pm.

Terri assigned me to cook for the conference…so I did my now famous black bean stew, with fresh bread from the French Bakery, followed by a lemon cake and coconut custard for dessert. There was nothing left, so it must have been OK. But then, we are dealing with missionaries who will eat anything…

In my Institute class we were studying the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I thought I would make up a test for the class to see how much they knew about the resurrection. Here are the questions, with references to where I found the information, and you could find the answers…

TPJS = Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith

Tomorrow, if your good, I will post the answers to these questions.

As you review the questions, understanding that we have been given the answers to all of these questions, ponder just how much light and knowledge God has poured down upon His people in the last days! It is astonishing!

And this is just ONE gospel subject we are considering… When adding all the light and knowledge we have obtained concerning the other gospel doctrine subjects, it becomes another absolute proof that the Gospel has been restored in our day and we actually do have living Prophets and Apostles to lead and guide us.

Most of this knowledge is not available to other churches and religions. It is only found within the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When God promised the windows of heaven would be opened, He was not kidding!

Have fun with these questions. We did!

Sister Lamb and Call give their weekly report. They are both so upbeat and positive! Of course, they should be…they are having a lot of success and are leading the Zone in numbers of discussions taught. Sister Lamb’s last week on the island is coming up! She only has about two weeks left!

Elder Whipple and Merritt give their weekly report (and Elder Whipple gave the lesson this week). They are doing well also. The had a baptism recently and have at least one more coming up!

Elder Jones and Stevens give their report. They are two of our hardest working elders. Elder Jones is kept very busy, as he often plays the piano and acts as chorister for meetings. They are having a lot of success working with inactive members and recently baptized members.

Elder Moux and Elder Sabin give their report. They are off to Barbados this week for Mission Leadership Conference. They recently had a baptism, and are working with a number of inactive members.

Elder Ashcraft was given an assignment to give part of the lesson.

The entire Zone/District is really doing well right now. Every area has been having success, and we have 4-5 people preparing for baptism. We often have 5-6 investigators coming to church every week, and the work with the members is progressing also.

It is a great time to serve on ST Martin!

Elder Jones is really magnifying his calling: besides his daily missionary work, he plays the piano in church, and conducts during Sacrament meeting!

Elder Cox gave a talk this week in sacrament meeting.

Great week!

President Herrington visits

This was/is a busy week. We had a transfer (kind of a mid-transfer transfer) where Elder Marae was moved to Granada and Elder Sabin came here to St Martin as a Zone Leader.

We also had a ‘surprise’ visit by President and Sister Herrington. They came for a few days to work with the missionaries, hold some training meetings with the local Branch, and see how things were going.

We had yet another baptism on Saturday. This is Sissla with Elder Merritt who baptized him. He had Elder Jones give him the Holy Ghost on Sunday.

A crowd gathers after Sissla’s baptism to congratulate him. President and Sister Herrington were able to attend.

President Herrington and President Huggins waiting for Sacrament meeting to begin. Terri and I both spoke on Sunday–Terri spoke on Sacrifice and I spoke on Eternal Marriage (Valentines day and all…). After us Sister Herrington and then President Herrington spoke to the congregation.

The President will stay until Tues, when he is off again; leaving after District Meeting.
