Book Log: July (Part 2)

6. Andreas J. Kostenberger and Michael J. Kruger, The Heresy and Orthodoxy: How Contemporary Culture's Fascination with Diversity Has Reshaped our Understanding of Early Christianity (Crossway 2010). A thorough, systematic, patient, scholarly dismantling of the Bauer-Ehrman thesis. Ever wondered if orthodoxy is just the theology of the winners, or if the canon is nothing but the product of arbitrary church fiat, or if the textual evidence for the New Testament is unbearably weak? Then ...

How Do I Pick What Books to Read?

Someone asked me that question in the comments, and I've been asked it before. Here's my brief response:

Well, I usually keep a list of books I'm interested in. When I spot one on a blog or in a magazine or recommended by a friend I write the book on the list (or drop it in my cart on Amazon). Over several weeks books will pile up on the list. Once I have my current "to read" stack down to 3-5 books I usually order some more (I like to read several books at a time).

I don't have a...

Book Log: July (Part 1)

It's been several months since I've posted a book log. The omission has been owing to a humility that is probably closer to pride. My fear, not completely unsubstantiated, is that people will read the monthly log and sigh with hopelessness, "My, my, doesn't he read a lot of books." Or ponder with disdain, "He must think he's real special for reading all those books." In other words, I've been worried what people will think. I've wanted to be humble, or at least seem humble. Or both. I'm not s...

The Evangelical Reformed Movement: A Comeback

In my previous post I referred to a new collection of essays on The Future of Evangelicalism.

You may have noticed that Collin Hansen, Justin Taylor, and I wrote one of the essays. It's entitled "The Evangelical Reformed Movement: A Comeback."

I thought I would reprint the article here (you may also be interested in the forthcoming book Don't Call it a Comeback: The Old Faith for a New Day).

*******

About five years ago, something strange happened in the Christian world: Reformed theology made a...

The Future of Evangelicalism

Timothy Dalrymple of Patheos has organized an ambitious collection of essays on "The Future of Evangelicalism." The essays will be rolled out over the next two weeks, starting today. There should be plenty for people to like and not like. Some of the articles will be helpful and with others you'll be wondering "Why are we listening to this person on the future of evangelicalism?"An interesting and impressive collection nonetheless.

Here's the lineup:

Transforming the Church (August 2) – Scot...

Why I Love My Church

This is the fifth Sunday in a row that I've been away from my church. We've had a great time in Colorado. I got a lot accomplished and our whole family has had a ball. But we'll be glad to be back in Michigan later this week (Lord willing).

And the best thing about coming back is our church family (I love you too biological family!). Being away reminds me what a privilege it is serve at University Reformed Church.

Here are just a few reasons I've been thankful for URC even while I've been ...

Fav Five Missions Books

As you may recall, Greg Gilbert and I are working on a book tentatively titled What is the Mission of the Church? Hence, over the past several months we've been reading dozens of missiological tomes. There are tons of missions resources, and we barely scratched the surface with our reading. But from what I've read, here are my Fav Five books on the theology of mission.

(This list is for theological books and doesn't include biographies, books on global Christianity, or "field manual" type...

Doug Phillips on The New vs. The Old in Our New Life with Christ

GUEST POST from Doug Phillips

Sometimes it's helpful for me to try to get the "big picture." That's what I've tried to do in the following summary of essential characteristics of the authentic Christian life.

And one valuable way of summarizing the Christian life is by looking at the antitheses of the godliness. The pursuit of holiness is a journey of ongoing repentance that keeps us "putting off the old" as we simultaneously seek to "put on the new" (Eph. 4:22-24; Col.3: 9-12ff.). As J.I...
