Movie Review: War of the Living Dead

zombiewarsThe week before the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Colorado Gold Conference and I had no time to watch a zombie movie. Sorry, War of the Living Dead, aka Zombie Wars is one I watched a few years ago. Here’s what it’s about:

“Fifty years after a world-wide zombie epidemic had begun, a small group of rebel soldiers learn that intelligent zombies have begun breeding humans for food. The soldiers plan an all-out war to rid the Earth of the flesh-eating monsters for good, as the rest of the surviving world’s population struggles to survive against the zombie hordes.”

I enjoyed this movie, and it’s memorable four years later. Basically the movie is about zombies breeding humans on a farm for food. When a group of humans find out about the farm, they plan to destroy it and kill the zombies. The movie had a decent story line and strong characters. I liked the female lead quite a bit and would love to see her in more movies. It was filmed pretty well and the acting wasn’t all that bad. It even had a pretty good ending. I read that it reminded another reviewer of a zombie planet of the apes and I have to agree. What I didn’t like, were the zombies. Bad make up job, and if they had the intelligence to breed humans they should have been a more developed character than the traditional “Night of the Living Dead” zombie.

Movie Review: Autumn

AutumnWOW! I found another good one that’s rated below 4 on IMDB. Even has David Carradine in it. Here’s what it’s about:

” A horrible virus kills billions within minutes. The few survivors that are left have to deal with the shock of the apocalypse, and they have no idea that things are about to get much worse.

Billions are dead and the few that are left start to realize they are not alone. Initially when the dead begin to rise, they are not very threatening. However, in a short period of time, the lurching bodies begin to get their most basic senses back and this makes them much more dangerous. When the dead become attracted to light and sound, the survivors have no option but to live in silent darkness.”

This is one of those movies that a lot of viewers passionately hate. I read reviews after watching it myself and was surprised by so many slashing remarks. Made me pause to list the things I liked about it to see if I’d change my mind, but I didn’t. I still loved it and here’s why:

The zombies evolve. After the virus hit, everyone dies pretty quickly but they don’t turn into zombies within minutes. You have a bunch of survivors who are looking more to escape the smell. I liked the anticipation of waiting for the to zombies to figure out their desire for human flesh. It just took a little long for it to happen.
The movie is memorable. I watched Autumn over a week ago and I still remember the story and the setting, and still feel for the characters.
The acting is not horrendous. In fact, it’s pretty good for a low-budget zombie movie.
Good zombies. The zombie makeup was well done and the zombies were well played.
The movie stays true to the book. At least that’s what I’ve heard because I haven’t read the book. I did like the movie enough to pick up the book.

I do wish there had been a bit more gore in this one. The part thrown in with David Carradine was also unnecessary. While this one won’t go on my best list, it deserves a rise above the haters 1 ratings.

My Rating: 3.8 out of 5 Bloody Brains

Movie Review: Space Zombie Bingo

SpaceZombieBingoI’ve been watching way too many low rated zombie movies I love lately. So I thought I’d find one I can trash this week, and Space Zombie Bingo delivered. Here’s what it’s about:

“The earth is in grave danger when a gang of flesh-eating zombies from outer space arrive on Earth. The future of the world rests solely on the shoulders of the Zombie Defense Corps and their incredulous leader, Major Kent Bendover. Will Major Bendover and his moronic troops have what it takes to battle these horrifying space invaders?”

Did you notice the name Major Bendover? Seriously? There’s way too much of this kind of silliness in the movie. The makers tried too hard to be stupid to the point the movie was just moronic. I had to go back and look at other people’s reviews and found that 70% of viewers on Amazon rated this one a 1 out of 10, probably only because they couldn’t rate it lower. My favorite comment is, “Make “Plan 9 from outer space” look like an Oscar winner.” Please, Don’t bother with this one. I’m only giving this one a half a star because there were points where the directors successfully gave the film the feel of a 60s B horror film.

My Rating: 0.5 out of 5 Bloody Brains

Movie Review: Dead Within

Dead Within is a different kind of zombie movie, but that doesn’t make it bad. Here’s what it’s about: ” Six months after the outbreak, a man and woman have survived by isolating themselves in a remote cabin. Starved for resources, they must confront the horrors that threaten them from outside and from within.” Why ... Read more...

Easy GF Peach Cobbler

Last weekend I wanted to make gluten free peach cobbler for movie night with friends, something I expected to be a quick throw together dessert. Well, first off, it turned out to be NOT SO easy to find a simple recipe. I mean, peach cobbler with gluten has at least a million recipes with 10 or less ingredients all over the Internet. Why does gluten free have to be so…
