How To Create An Alphanumerical Passcode On Your iOS Device [iOS Tip]

When we have an iOS device stolen, thieves don't just obtain our precious iPhone, but they also obtain all the information that's stored on it. Our devices are filled with personal data such as names and addresses for our friends and family, and for our convenience, they save usernames and passwords for all kinds of different services.

That's why we secure our devices with passcode locks. But did you know you can use an alphanumeric passcode to make it even more secure?

To apply an alphanumeric passcode, open up the Settings app on your iOS device and tap on the General tab, then on Passcode Lock.

If you already have a passcode set, you'll have to enter it in order to change the settings. If you don't already have one, you'll need to create one. But before you hit that button at the top that says "Turn Passcode On," toggle the switch beneath it so that "Simple Passcode" is set to "OFF."

Now turn on the passcode lock and create your passcode. This can be as many characters as you wish, and you can use letters — uppercase and lowercase — numbers, and symbols.

To be really secure, try to create a passcode that no one else will be able to guess. For example, don't just use your name, or something like "abc123." Once you're happy, hit the 'Next' button in the top right-hand corner and your passcode will be applied. It will now prevent your device from being unlocked until the code is entered.

The Daily Show Hates Freemium Games Just As Much As We Do [Humor]

Here at Cult of Mac, we've got our own axe to grind against freemium App Store games that try to get kids to max out their daddy's credit cards with expensive in-app purchases, so it's nice to see The Daily Show take freemium game makers to town in an absolutely hilarious, spot-on segment that shows how scummy these waters of the App Store can really be.

The report is by Daily Show correspondent Aasiv Mandvi, who reports primarily on a game called Tap Fish 2, which gives kids control of their own fish tank… and charges a pretty penny if kids want to, say, feed their favorite fish more found when they run out, instead of just watching them swim, suffer, then die.

According to Tap Fish 2's creators at Gameview Studios, this teaches kids valuable life lessons about responsibility… lessons that a developmental expert also interviewed by Mandvi says are completely lost on kids, who are willing to max out their parents' credit cards just to avoid seeing a "living creature" die.

This report is a complete skewering of disreputable freemium game makers. The best part is when Gameview Studios CEO Rizwan Virk visibly squirms when Mandvi suggests they call the parent of a child who spent over $1500 on in-app purchases in Tap Fish 2 on the phone, saying he'd prefer to deal with such an encounter "via e-mail." I bet he would: the parent eventually heaps obscenities upon Virk for twenty minutes.

Mandvi's brief encapsulation of the freemium trend is just perfect: "Turns out these games are free, up until the point when you don't want them to suck." Indeed.

Report: China Unicom To Sell iPhone 4S By Christmas

The iPhone 4S has finally been approved by Chinese regulators. Apple's newest device today received its network approval, paving the way for carrier China Unicom to begin offering the smartphone in time for Christmas.

China Unicom, Apple's sole carrier partner in the Asian country, told Chinese news site Sohu.com that training, testing and sales preparations are already complete. The company expects to sell the iPhone 4S without a contract for 4,999 yuan ($790).

Apple increasingly sees China as a lucrative market, the nation recently becoming the second most profitable region for the tech giant. Although the reaction to the iPhone 4S by the Chinese consumer is unknown, in November Hong Kong pre-orders sold out in 10 minutes.

Which phone would fictional advertising genius Don Draper from AMC's Mad Men use? No surprises here: as this picture of Jon Hamm from the set of the hit television proves, only the phone with the best and most convincing advertising campaign on Earth, an iPhone, would do for Draper.

iPhone 4S And iPad 2 Might Be Jailbreakable With Latest Exploit

Earlier this morning, we told you about a promising untethered jailbreak for most older devices capable of running iOS 5. Unfortunately, though, this jailbreak will only work on past-gen devices like the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and the iPod touch.

Why? So far, the A5 chip inside of the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S have proven impossible to jailbreak by conventional methods. The iPad 2 was jailbreakable under iOS 4.3.3 thanks to the JailbreakMe 3.0 userland exploit, but since then, no further jailbreaks — tethered or untethered — have been identified.

Here's the good news, though. French jailbreaker Pod2G just took to his Twitter feed and while he didn't confirm his new jailbreak exploit would work on the iPhone 4S or iPad 2, he at least suggested that it was possible it would. Could this be the ray of hope every iPhone 4S owner has been looking for?

iPhone 3GS Is Still Hot: 2M Sold In December

In technology, two years can be a lifetime. It's encouraging to learn the iPhone 3G is still going strong. According to reports, suppliers will ship 2 million of the handsets during the December quarter, making it the second best-selling iPhone behind the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 3GS, launched in 2009 and succeeded by the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, gained a new life when Apple offered the handset for free (99-cents at AT&T), with a two-year contract. Industry publication DigiTimes reports suppliers will pump out 2 million iPhone 3GS units for the December quarter, followed by 1.4-1.6 million devices in the first quarter of 2012.

By comparison, between 800,000 and 1 million CDMA iPhone 4s will be produced for the fourth quarter of 2011 with 500,000 to 600,000 units manufactured for the first quarter of next year. The strong showing by the iPhone 3G likely was fueled by Apple's decision to convert the handset into an entry-level iPhone, opening the entire Apple economy to a "wider audience of customers."

Traditionally, Apple has retired the previous generations of iPhone; however, there had been a widespread expectation the Cupertino, Calif. tech giant would need a low-cost entry-level device to compete with Android handsets.

Continued demand for the iPhone 3GS likely will play a role in Apple announcing record smartphone sales. After the delayed introduction of the iPhone 4S created a sales downturn, the company expects demand for the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS will lift the December quarter revenues to $37 billion. Analyst consensus puts the quarter's iPhone sales between 28 to 30 million units, with some onlookers forecasting up to 42 million iPhones.

Words To Eat: Sharp Says They Aren't Worried About Apple's iTV

Photo by Thomas Hawk - http://flic.kr/p/5FefCC

Japan's Sharp, maker of huge-screen televisions, voiced confidence Thursday as it told reporters Apple isn't much of a concern. What about the almost incessant chatter that the tech giant will enter the TV manufacturing market with an iTV in 2012? "It's not something we're studying very hard," an executive claims. Unclear whether this is bravado or whistling past the graveyard, but perhaps Sharp missed class the day Apple mangled a whole string of industries thought to be untouchable.

The comments by Kozo Takahashi, Sharp's head of North and South American operations, follow reports Apple is prepping a redesigned television that could tie-in iTunes and other connectivity. "I really have no idea what kind of TV it will be," the executive said. "But if he came up with it, I'm sure it will be amazing," Takahashi said.

In Jobs's biography, written by Walter Isaacson, the Apple co-founder is quoted as saying about how to remake the TV interface and experience: "I finally cracked it." Analysts such as Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster contend Apple is already in the late stages of approving an iTV product for 2012.

Sharp's comments are intriguing, given reports in November that the TV manufacturer and component supplier is adapting its production lines to churn out TFT LCD panels for the iTV.

Although those reports suggest TV manufacturers, already operating on razor thin margins, are panicked by the idea Apple could enter the market. The Cupertino, Calif. company has a reputation for squeezing suppliers to produce advanced iPhone, iPad and Mac designs for the least money. Sharp, however, believes U.S. consumers are not as technology-obsessed as Japanese buyers. Instead, American consumers demand low prices, wide screens and the latest features, such as 3D.

However, we have seen the Apple brand become a feature by itself. From iPods to iPads, consumers expect all devices to operate the way Apple devices do. The only question is will the TV manufacturing industry become the latest where everyone plays follow-the-leader behind Apple?

TweetDeck Releases HTML5-Based App In The Mac App Store

Following the release of Twitter 4.0 for iPhone, TweetDeck has released a new, HTML5-based version of its Mac app in the Mac App Store. Unlike TweetDeck's previous Adobe AIR apps, this new version is simply a web-based client.

The app is available to download for free in the Mac App Store. TweetDeck allows you to show your Facebook and Twitter activity side by side in the app's column-based layout.

You can tell that the app is based on HTML5, which is a little disappointing for those of us that wish TweetDeck would introduce a native Mac app. Still, it's better than AIR, right?
