Is Harry Wilson making the grade yet?
Harry Wilson was again on the international stage playing for Wales this weekend against Azerbaijan and was instrumental in helping Wales get their group E win. Harry took the corner for the 10th minute goal headed in by Keiffer Moore. Then he was the quickest to react to Dan James' spectacular shot off the left wing that bounced out from the frame of the goal and Wilson headed Wales into a 0-2 away lead. As an international game, it couldn't have gone much better for Harry Wilson and team-mate Chris Mepham.
Harry Wilson warms up before taking on Man Utd this season. What Liverpool see as Harry Wilson's ling term future has not been made obvious yet. Having allowed him to step up from Derby County in the Championship to Bournemouth in the Premier League is a solid career progression. But what happens when Harry's time is up at Bournemouth? Can Liverpool offer him a starting place and will Harry be satisfied to perhaps be a sub at Anfield rather than a starter?

I ams sure Harry will want to play and he may have to decide himself if he is going to get the break he needs at Liverpool. In a recent interview he said Jurgen Klopp does look at his games and remarks on them as he did when Harry scored that great free kick against Man City. The free kick striking that Harry has shown has been fantastic and he seems confident of making keeper's work.
Harry was unlucky not to get on the score sheet again in the Azerbaijan match in the second half after some 56 minutes when he cut on from the left and then stepped back on to his left foot to his a sharp low shot across goal that Balayev in the Azerbaijan goal only just kept out with a super one handed save to his left. Scoring regularly is starting to come to Harry's game though and Bournemouth are in a great position to benefit from that this season. Whether AFCB would like to hold on to him though is not clear. I think he is a great talent and yet he has more to do to win some fans over both at Liverpool and AFCB. The Welsh fans may already feel that he is a great addition to their squad for many years to come.

A missed opportunity at Newcastle to push on
Bournemouth's defence couldn't hold out against Newcastle United, and both goals will be frowned upon by Eddie Howe as AFCB did not exactly show text book defending. The first goal was particularly frustrating, as it looked to the fans that it might be offside. But the run was well-timed and the defence was non-existent in the end, while the second goal from the corner saw Bournemouth switch off, for an instant, which is never a luxury you can take.
Bournemouth have to try and push on in the crunch games. For Howe it was the failure to push on after the win against Manchester United that was the frustrating thing. Back-to-back wins have been in short supply, and a win at Newcastle would have pushed Bournemouth well into the higher reaches of the top 10. Now they see other teams lining up just behind them as the points close up again.
Eddie Had a Dream eBook version -available now!Newcastle United were not miles better than Bournemouth, but they kept focused and didn't lose sight of what they needed to do. Bournemouth seemed to lack a game plan that could find weak points in Newcastle's set-up. As soon as Steve Bruce had the lead, he closed the door and looked to hold out, by getting everyone behind the ball. The forwards are still not that confident in front of goal, and testing the keeper is something that Eddie Howe needs to find a solution to. But when King, Wilson and Solanke are not firing, who do you turn to?

It was a narrow win against Manchester United and a narrow defeat against Newcastle United. The table shows it is a tight league and very little defines the teams after 12 games. Bournemouth know that games like the Newcastle one will be important, as they are games that could have gone either way, and they need to start creating more chances against teams that are still looking over their shoulder.

No clean sheet record for the Cherries
Four games with no goals against was beyond AFCB in the end. The run came to a shuddering halt at Newcastle United and every time Bournemouth look like they could really make an impression on the top places in the league, they come a cropper.
Aaron Ramsdale couldn't keep the shots out this time, but still had a great match.Steve Cook has had some marvellous games for the Cherries in recent weeks, but he was all at sea for crucial moments of the match at Newcastle. He almost saw Allan Saint-Maximan go past him and score with only the crossbar saving Cook's blushes and for the second Newcastle goal, Cook lost his man. Sadly, Southgate was no doubt watching these errors somewhere and he'll feel justified in not picking Steve for England yet.

Adam Smith also had a game where he seemed to be bouncing off Newcastle players more than anything else. The solid nature of the defence which looked so good for 20 minutes, just gradually lost confidence as Newcastle got stronger. While Ramsdale stood firm and Aké put in another brave performance, there were too many silly errors to give Bournemouth a firmer hold of this game.

Eddie Howe was right that Bournemouth lost their way. Far from looking in control with much of the possession. The ball became an object that just wouldn't run right for the Cherries. But the players have to make the ball work for them better by getting into good positions and stretching the opposition better, while keeping Ramsdale with little but long range shots.

Searching for a winner Bournemouth lacked calm heads
The Newcastle match was one that might have gone either way. On balance Bournemouth could perhaps feel unlucky that they didn't get a draw, but Newcastle had plenty of chances to win by a bigger margin. While Eddie Howe chose to go three at the back to give more impetus to the team in the second half, Bournemouth never looked like troubling Dubravka.
Bournemouth are still not getting it right in attack. There is something not quite clicking with Bournemouth's front players this season. Callum Wilson hardly had a kick up at St James' park and Bournemouth lacked fire power. The Cherries have score twice now in four games and it's just not enough to win many games.

Harry Wilson seems to have a gift for getting goals out of nothing but apart from that how much was Dubravka troubled? Perhaps Diego Rico's early shot in the first half and Ryan Fraser's charge round the keeper which didn't end with an accurate final shot. But Newcastle gained confidence from their goals and Bournemouth were relying on either a super pass from Lewis Cook to get Wilson in, or some more accurate crossing from Danjuma when he came on. Creatively, there is a hole at the moment and while Lerma was missed, it was at both ends of the pitch where Bournemouth lost this game against Newcastle. It wasn't good enough in either box.

Eddie Had a Dream is on sale now!Fraser was busy first half, but isn't finding it easy to link with Callum Wilson anymore, while King has been running into blind alleys. Bournemouth need more work rate from Harry Wilson as well. I am not sure how Eddie can revitalise things. It is Stanislas and Brooks that he needs to bring in, but are either of them going to be ready by mid-November?

Do AFCB always freeze in games that could take them into the top six?
The Cherries have already had some high-pressured games this season when a win could propel them to the top six positions. But we have seen time and again that they have fallen short in most of these games. It happened when the Cherries drew with West Ham in September and then against against Arsenal at the start of October. Bournemouth have since worked their way back up the table, but when they had the chance to go fifth or six they came unstuck against against Newcastle United.
AFCB need to stop freezing in the big games. If Bournemouth aspire to be a top club then they will have to start getting over the line in these games when the league position can change dramatically. It marks out the best teams from the also runs and at the moment the crunch games are not going Bournemouth's way. Hopefully, someone is looking at the mental side of these results and trying to see how Bournemouth can do better when they next get an opportunity to climb into the top six.
AdvertisementIt seems that AFCB are much more adept at finding a result after a disappointing spell. The players almost need to have some poor performances to stir them into bringing their A game. Why that A game goes missing in the key matches that would start to underline Bournemouth as a top club, I am not sure. But it is almost as if the players think they are not yet ready to be seen as contenders for the European places.
Online-Bookies.org.ukIn a way that would seem strange to me for most of the first team now are international players that will be going away this next week to represent their countries at the top level. The sum of all their experience means that Bournemouth has the quality to do better and it is the players starting to believe that it can come true that we now need to have a sustained attack on those top six places.

Ryan Fraser and Harry Wilson swap on for January?
The national press are all over the news that Ryan Fraser is in advance talks with Liverpool for a January move. This really shouldn't be a big surprise for AFCB supporters, although Arsenal had always been seen as the front runners. Arsenal may not be willing to pay a fee for the winger though and Liverpool would appreciate the extra attacking legs of Fraser for the title run-in. As Liverpool have not won the Premier League, Klopp is looking to ensure they don't run out of steam this time. Bournemouth fans also seem keen on a swap deal for Harry Wilson going the other way, but local press have been pouring cold water on suggestions that AFCB will sell in January.
Is Fraser set to be Liverpool's new Dalglish?Ryan has been a bit of a shadow of the player that created so many goals for Callum Wilson last season. While he did get on the score sheet against Everton, he'll be annoyed that he hasn't netted since. With the rumours now out that his advisers have been talking to Liverpool, it opens him up to further scrutiny of his performances in a red and black shirt and perhaps explains that he has been finding it hard to concentrate on his game, when such a big move is in the offing for him.
I am sure Andrew Robertson at Liverpool has been telling Ryan that he should come and join them and Liverpool have always had a strong bond with Scottish players in the past. Who wouldn't want to follow in the footsteps of Graham Souness and Kenny Dalglish?
It won't be easy for Ryan to push into the starting 11, but I don't think that will bother him too much at Anfield. He'll have everything he needs around him to make him an even better player and Jurgen Klopp will be rubbing his hands to get hold of a player that has shown that he has great Premier League ability.
Eddie Had a Dream eBook version -available now!Where does it leave AFCB? Well, if Ryan goes in January they may get a small transfer fee which is better than nothing in the summer. The space created will look enticing to Arnaud Danjuma, but I suspect that Jordan Ibe could also be leaving in January and Bournemouth could move themselves for another winger to replace Fraser. They'll be plenty of Cherries fans wanting Harry Wilson, but I am not sure Liverpool will want to part with their young Welshman.

I will wish Ryan Fraser all the best if he does go. What he has achieved at AFCB is as good as any player under Howe's reign and it is great to see our players in demand by the top clubs.

Did King wimp out of scoring?
I thought some of the criticism of Josh King was unfair, after late minute chance against Newcastle United. I am sure that King would have wanted to score. The angle from the flick on from Aké did not look as favourable as some fans might have though, and the ball was travelling at speed.
Could Josh have done more to get onto the late cross at Newcastle?Of course, we wanted Josh to stick the chance away. If he had come out with it with a broken nose or a bump on his head and stills cored he would have been a big hero. But I don't believe a player has time to always think, gosh here is a chance- hang on, if I go for this I could get hurt! The speed of the game is too quick. If King thought he could get to the ball better, I'm sure he would have lunged at with more intent.
I wonder if the criticism of Josh would not have been so strong had he not done so well in the previous week. The British love praising people one week and knocking them down the next. It is more important to back them when things don't work out as we'd hoped. Creating a positive bubble around players pays off in the end and the negativity is I hope something that AFCB fans don't dwell on too long, as we have some great players that are capable of amazing things.
Online-Bookies.org.ukAs a fan we all want our team to win. The players probably feel the pressure more than anyone in representing the club. No one wants to let their fans down and Josh King was not responsible for the cherries going 2-1 down in the game. Looking at the bigger picture, we should be asking why did it take to the last minute of added time to finally get a half chance to level the scores?

Newcastle comeback to sink Cherries 2-1
Match ReportNewcastle United 2 v 1 AFC Bournemouth9 November 2019Attendance: 44,424
Newcastle end AFCB's run of clean sheets. This was a thrilling match with Bournemouth taking the early lead with a superbly worked set-piece goal from a corner. Fraser and King liked well and the Wee-man's ball back to Harry Wilson was met with a crisp finish, inside the left post on 14 minutes. Fraser might have made it 2-0 a few minutes later, but ended up in the net himself. Later in the half he rounded the keeper only to be denied by a goal line clearance. But Newcastle turned it round by half-time. While Saint-Maximan hit the bar from eight yards, his later cross was headed in by Yedlin, just thee minutes before half-time, beating the offside trap. The second-half was a much more equal and the next goal would be all important. It fell to Newcastle and Cieran Clark, when Bournemouth failed to clear a corner. The Cherries couldn't find away back and, even with King's last minute header going wide, they didn't seem to believe they would get back into it.
Eddie Howe brought in Lewis Cook for the suspended Jefferson Lerma in the starting 11. Jack Stacey also replaced Lloyd Kelley on the bench, and Dan Gosling made the bench with Lerma not in the squad. Bournemouth lined up in lime green shirts and socks and blue shorts.

Bournemouth are looking comfortable in possession. Newcastle aren't pressing much. Fraser spots King, who crosses for Callum Wilson and the header just goes over the bar perhaps with a deflection - corner to Bournemouth on 14 minutes. Harry Wilson meets Fraser's pass well to slip Bournemouth ahead 0-1 bottom left corner. King did well keeping Newcastle players occupied at the near post and Fraser put the ball back to Harry Wilson, who had a great amount of space to slip in the shot.
A shot right at the top corner is just kept out by Dubravka. King played it to Rico and it was a great shot. King has gone in on Lascelles who again topples into Dubravka. Possession is 67 per cent for the Cherries at the moment.

Possession is 82 per cent in AFC Bournemouth's favour apparently. That seems a bit heavier than what we are seeing. Long ball over the top to Fraser, who goes round the keeper, but he has shot just off target and it's cleared on 35 minutes. That was so close.
Harry Wilson goes rampaging through the middle and is taken down by Hayden who gets a yellow card. A good position this, but it's clipped over by Harry Wilson, got that one wrong.
Steve Cook has made a mistake Saint-Maximan is in and he's hit the bar! How did he miss that. The follow up comes in and Ramsdale has saved it. Corner to Newcastle. Well it should be 1-1.
Saint-Maximan round and shoots and coming in is Yedlin who buries the header from a yard but is he offside? VAR is employed, it's 1-1. Bournemouth are pegged back just before half-time.
Willems to Hayden and Joelinton on the break hits the shot wide. Josh King takes the ball down on his chest from Natahn Aké, but he's powered it into the side netting. Five minutes of added time.
Ramsdale come out just in time ahead of Saint-Maximan. JonJo Shelvey has a shot charged down. Fraser puts in a cross it's long. Harry Wilson puts it back in but Dubravka is there. It's all swung around here. AFCB need a big second half.

The pundits say Steve Cook switched off and lost his marker.

Over the top and Ramsdale comes out to stop Joelinton, great save, corner. Ramsdale gets tow hand to the ball. Fraser back to Billing, who swings over a high shot.
Good defensive header by Adam Smith and Willems' shot comes off Steve Cook. Fraser just can't make a pass. He has a free kick. Almirón fouls Wee-man. That's easy for the keeper.
AFCB bring on Solanke and Francis on 66 minutes with Rico and Harry Wilson going off. Bournemouth go three at the back and Adam Smith pushes up into midfield. Solanke goes up the middle and has a shot blocked.
Fraser will take a free kick on 71 minutes. Billing puts and aimless ball in that Dubravka, swallows up. Lewis Cook and Steve Cook have blocked shots. Adam Smith does well to hold up Saint-Maximin on the break.
Crosses from Francis and Lewis Cook don't find a Bournemouth player. Fernandez is booked for a foul on Fraser. Saint-Maximin is away Francis can't keep up and Ramsdale makes a stunning save, Amiron follows up and it's over the bar hitting his own player on 77 minutes.

Last chance for Bournemouth. Danjuma on the left drags back and goes down. Corner. Aké flicks on and back post it's King he has headed it wide!
SummaryBournemouth again lost a game going into the international break. Things looked so positive after Harry Wilson's goal, but slowly the game turned round after Yedlin's goal before half-time. Slack defending led to the second Newcastle goal, while Bournemouth couldn't get their decision making right in the final third. The only positive was Aaron Ramsdale, who looks totally at home at this level.

AFCB possession 60 per cent, shots 8, shots on target 2, corners 1, fouls 3Newcastle United 40 per cent, shots11, shots on target 4, corners 1, fouls 5

Second halfRico does well at the back having been hemmed in. Lewis Cook's pass. Callum Wilson just sees the ball fall away when he would have been in on the edge of the box.
Billing loses the ball and Aké tidies up. Billing heads a long throw out for a corner to Newcastle. It's gone back and come in to the penalty spot. A knock on and by Frenandez and it's tapped in by Cieran Clark 2-1 to Newcastle. The challenges were weak in Bournemouth's defence, 52 minutes gone. The pundits say Steve Cook switched off and lost his marker.
Lewis Cook fins King. Fraser is in, but can't find a good pass. Saint-Maximan keeps the ball superbly with Bournemouth players all around him and Ramsdale has to make a save as Willems has a shot.
Danjuma is on from Adam Smith. on 78 minutes. Billing makes a weak header at goal. Joleinton is on against Steve Cook. He cut's back and Ramsdale has saved that, too.
Almirón fouls Danjuma and Bournemouth have a free kick. Almiroón was angrey Dnnjuma had not put the ball out when Joelinton went down and all the players are having their say.
Andy Carrol is coming on for Newcastle as Joelinton comes off with seven minutes left. Aké wins a free kick. Danjuma is offside.
Lewis Cook finds Callum Wilson. Fraser to Wilson. The game has been stopped, Willems is down. Solanke and Fraser keep looking for a shot.
Lewis Cook to Wilson and a corner to Bournemouth on 88 minutes. Fraser to Francis and shot blocked. Danjuma and Aké, Billing to Steve Cook for an overhead and Carroll got in the way. Saint-Maximin is subbed for Atsu.
Added time goes up, six minutes. Solanke down the left. Francis now. Danjuma plays it behind Lewis Cook. Carroll gets it clear.

Is Steve Bruce turning it around at Newcastle?
Newcastle United might only be three points above the relegation zone, but they have had most of the stat of the season playing the top teams. Having picked up four points from their last two games, it is tempting to think that Newcastle are on the right track.
The home form of Newcastle United is pretty good of late. They have picked up a draw against Wolves and beat Man United 1-0, just like Bournemouth, as well as picking up score draws against Brighton and Watford. In fact, they haven't been beaten at St James' Park, but they have been drawing a few too many games. One win though and they would close up to a point behind Bournemouth.

So, I don't see this as a bottom side against a top side. The two teams are probably going to be quite evenly matched. Newcastle played very much on the break against West Ham in their last match and only had 30 per cent possession. But on the break they were fast with Allan Saint-Maxim making incisive runs down the middle of the pitch. Joelinton has also kept his place in the starting line-up, even if he has only scored once in 11 games. Paraguayan Miguel Almirón has also been consistently picked by Bruce in midfield alongside JonJo Shelvey.

Where Newcastle have been less successful is in keeping goals out. They tend to concede a goal a game consistently. Looking at the last home game the Toon had, they gave Wolves as many shots as Newcastle had themselves and Wolves had five shots on target. Against Man United they also conceded possession at 32 per cent but kept a clean sheet and had as many shots as United. Brighton too had the majority of possession at 72 per cent and it is likely that Newcastle are setting up this way to try and catch teams on the break.
For Bournemouth there will be an enforced change with Jefferson Lerma suspended for one match, but we have seen Dan Gosling training this week and Lewis Cook will also have his eyes on a starting spot next to Philip Billing. Let's also not forget that AFCb are going for a record fourth clean sheet in a row in the Premier League today, such has been the form of Nathan Aké and Steve Cook.

Callum Wilson knows goals are what will keep him in the England team
Callum Wilson has had a bit of a lean spell in front of goal. He is still top scorer though at AFCB and I'm sure he loves the pressure of being the man who is expected to be the leading goalscorer for the club at the end of the season. His competition for England spaces is now very high, with young forwards such as Tammy Abrahmam, Marcus Rashford and the more experienced captain, Harry Kane, vying for starting positions.
Callum Wilson could do with a goal boost this weekend.Callum has always looked good when playing for his country, but he hasn't had that many minutes. I was impressed with his performance at the end of the last England game and yet it will be tough for him to get a start at the moment. Callum has to keep playing well for AFCB and that is probably his main concern. If he can keep up with the top goalscorers in the Premier League, he won't be overlooked.

I am not sure when the last Bournemouth player went to a tournament for the full England squad, but there has to be a good chance that Callum can achieve that next year. It is crazy that Tyrone Mings could also achieve that, and it shows me how careers can take sudden changes in direction. It will be good for both Callum and Villa's Tyrone to get some top European football, and I expect the European Championship's can't come soon enough for them. But there will be growing expectations on the team to do well in a tournament that can be considered a home Championship.

Eddie Had a Dream eBook version -available now!Trying to keep doing the right thing is not easy when you are in the limelight for England, Callum is very focused though, and you can see that playing for England means a lot for him. But he can't take it for granted, for as we have seen, even Manchester United players fall out of the squad when they are not performing and Jesse Lingard would have been expected to be in front of Callum Wilson only a few months ago.
