Can Bournemouth fight their way out of trouble?

It was a longer wait for Bournemouth to pick up a win in 2020 in the league than I had hoped for, but the win against Brighton & Hove Albion can be a starting point for something better. Losing to Watford and Norwich City was very damaging, but other teams have not picked up too many points, while Bournemouth were falling down the table. The situation is salvageable, but form is everything now.
Bournemouth have started to find form - can they keep it going?Bournemouth got the win against Brighton despite a nervous first 30 minutes. The team was still not functioning that well, but was defending well enough to keep Brighton far enough from goal. What I did see that was better was the pressing from the front of the team. Bournemouth worked really hard just to win the ball high up the pitch. It made all the difference, because Brighton looked like the team that were taking risks at the back and not Bournemouth.

How much energy and confidence can Bournemouth get from one win? It might not be as much as we'd like with Arsenal to play next in the FA Cup, but it is a free hit against Arsenal and the pressure will come on again when Bournemouth play Aston Villa at home. The Cherries have not done well against the teams around them and Howe will know they can't keep dropping points, especially at home.

If the crowd can keep getting behind the team and giving the players that belief to put as much into games as they did against Brighton, they can fight their way up the league. The gaps are not enormous, but the sooner Bournemouth can string a few games together, the better their chances of getting the feeling that momentum is back with them.

In other news, Jermain Defoe has signed a pre-contract to join Rangers from Bournemouth permanently this summer.

Has Solanke woken up?

The player that Bournemouth fans should be getting behind even more now is Dominic Solanke. Yes, he has had an awful time at the club and has been slow to find his way at Bournemouth, but the player that Eddie Howe thought he'd bought is perhaps starting to emerge at long last.
Much better from Dominic Solanke.With two assists, Solanke could finally feel that he had really contributed to the win and more importantly Eddie Howe felt that his forward was starting to make the right decisions when closing in on goal. Passing at the right time and with the right weight is vital in the Premier League, and Solanke is starting to recognise he has to be better.
Advertisement He shouldn't worry too much about the goals for himself as they will come, if he keeps being positive and other players want to repay him when they see him in the box in a good position. It was the team performance helped by the individual work rate that gave them the win over Brighton. Feeling more part of the team is what Solanke needs to take away with him.

For the moment Solanke will probably keep his place to start, but it will also be good for the team for Solanke to know he has King ready to take his place if he doesn't keep his performances high.

Bournemouth might not have many goals this season, but they have players that want to improve and Solanke is one of those who may surprise us still this season.

Wrap Aaron Ramsdale in cotton wool

Aaron Ramsdale just lives for relegation battles. It is something I wish we didn't have to suffer at AFCB, but my eyes are usually glued to watching Aaron during games as he has a habit of doing the unbelievable, and his saves against Brighton were some of the best he has made in a Bournemouth shirt.
Ramsdale is already a big favourite with AFCB fans.It is one thing to come into a Premier League team and to keep out other top keepers but it is quite something else to be one of the leaders of the team on the pitch. Ramsdale just grows in stature every game. He is a real winner and the players only need to take inspiration form him and his saves and smiling face to get themselves in a better place.Advertisement

I'm hoping that Aaron remains fit, of course, as even though Mark Travers and Artur Boruc are able deputies, there is something special about Aaron when he is on the field of play.  It is surprising that he hasn't had more clean sheets, but I feel Eddie Howe can see that Ramsdale hasn't been the weak link this season, far from it. He really shouldn't be as good and confident as he is in his first Premier League season, but he is infectious and I love that about him.

It is strange that Bournemouth have had keeper problems in previous seasons, but now that they are deep in a relegation battle, the keeper spot is not the position that Eddie Howe needs to have too many worries about. I just wonder that if there are improvements to come from Aaron, then we really will have a very special keeper at AFCB.

Bournemouth didn't find it easy against Brighton. They were shackled for the first 20=30 minutes and looked second best, but by getting the first goal, Bournemouth grabbed the game and started to believe in themselves. The second goal before half-time was great timing and it helped the team settle down and have a clear plan for what they needed to do second half.
Eddie has a bit more purpose in his stride now.We have seen Bournemouth be nervous when they have had to hold out in games and the second 45 minutes would be a long time to try and hold out the clean sheet. While Brighton did get a goal, the pleasing thing was it didn't rattle the players. The players were focused on what they had to do. For once they were in the controlling position and could decide when to play and when to play safe.

It is what Watford did to Bournemouth and by working hard, Bournemouth gave Brighton no time on the ball and panicked them into mistakes. It was great to see and I wonder why the players have done this in this game, but couldn't manage it in others. To me it is a sign that the players have not been fit enough and now are finally getting back to where they want to be in terms of physical condition.

The team know now that they are just one win away from getting out of the bottom three. If they can get those points against Aston Villa at home in a few days time, it will really set the team up to do their best to keep above the bottom three. But the win against Brighton is only a first step. It shouldn't have taken so long for the team to click again, but they have shown that they want to stay in this league and now they perhaps, for the first time, are showing the fight for the task ahead.

Match ReportAFCB 3 v 1 Brighton & Hove Albion21 January 2020Attendance: 10,065 Ramsdale  keeps Bournemouth on track against Brighton with a 3-1 win.A great night for Bournemouth. Perhaps there is some hope that Bournemouth can make an escape and avoid relegation. Brighton were certainly pulled into the battle to stay up after they had started the better and looked to impose themselves well. But Solanke started to get a grip in the box and Harry Wilson fired Bournemouth ahead on 36 minutes after good work from Bournemouth's number nine. A corner was then directed in by Groß just before half-time to leave Bournemouth 2-0 up. The lead was extended further when Callum Wilson rounded Ryan to make it 3-0 and Brighton picked up a consolation goal from Aaron Mooy to spoil Bournemouth's hopes of a clean sheet. The win though is massive and the mood had finally changed at Dean Court.

Bournemouth made a couple of changes with Simon Francis and Dominic Solanke starting and Steve Cook was unavailable because of a suspension and Gosling moved to the bench. Meanwhile, Lloyd Kelly returned to the bench from injury.

The start by Bournemouth was good with players pressing Brighton in their own half. Callum Wilson got caught offside early. Bernardo had Brighton's first shot which went wide after Mooy's run at the Bournemouth defence.

Rya nFraser was working hard to cut down a Brighton pass. A long ball over the top for Maupay, but he can't connect with a good shot. Brighton are starting to keep the ball better and Bernado hits his shot at a Bournemouth defender for a corner.
Pröpper is getting on the ball a lot for Brighton, but he's clipped Harry Wilson. Adam Smith is caught in possession and Mooy's cross is guided away by Rico on 11 minutes. Ramsadle takes a cross but can't get the game going quickly with his kick as he hist the referee. 
Jahanbakhsh has a shot that is deflected by Billing over the bar. Solanke clears the Brighton corner.

Harry Wilson is brought down. The free kick gets to Billing but he is too wide and it's easy for Ryan to collect.

Mooy finds Bernado but hits it straight against Adam Smith. Maupay and he is blocked when Jahanbakhsh was pleading for a pass.
Groß fouls Aké. It's all Brighton and Bournemouth can't get things going. Mooy into Maupay but Aké gets the tackle in.

Dunk fouls Adam Smith. Harry Wilson comes forward. Lerma loses the ball, but gets it back. Billing puts the ball out.
Stephens almost got caught by Solanke. Mooy again comes forward. Maupay and Ramsdale saves well, Akee got the wrong side. Bournemouth are lucky not to be 0-1 down on 28 minutes. Aké blocked the second attempt.

Callum Wilson to Solanke, he pulls it back and Rico finds the side netting. A great chance then. Harry Wilson tries to bend a shot but it's out for a corner. Short corner, Solanke back to Harry Wilson and it's blocked.

Callum Wilson and Solanke to Harry Wilson who has scored on 36 minutes. Nine minutes to half-time. Bournemouth are 1-0 up. Solanke did well to pass to set Harry Wilson up, who hit it into the top of the net with his left foot.
Solanke and Adam Smith but Dunk puts it out for a throw. The keeper misses it but Callum Wilson didn't get there. Solanke as a shot deflected for a corner.
Corner the near post it's gone in by Groß. Rico's corner goes in off the Brighton player. Callum Wilson wants to claim it. Anyway it's 2-0. Callum Wilson is announced as the goal scorer on 42 minutes. However, the ball though came off Groß's left foot. It should be an own goal.

Groß hits a shot over the bar. Solanke again, Fraser and Solanke tried to find Callum Wilson but Dunk got a challenge in for a corner. The keeper punches clear. Aké volley's high and wide.
Half-time, the Cherries are 2-0 up!

Second half
Jahanbakhsh against Rico and Rico wins a goal kick. Callum Wilson against Dunk and Callum wins a corner. 

Jahanbakhsh shoots, it's deflected and Ramsdale sees it spin just past the post of Ake's foot. It's a corner. Ramsdale gets a hand on the cross.

Harry Wilson presses and catches Webster, Billing wins the ball. Solanke fouls Alzate. Billing to Harry Wilson. AdamSmith and Fraser tried to head it.

Maupay and  Groß bit Billing keeps him back. The confidence is back in Bournemouth's game. Fraser is fouled by Pröpper.


Alzaty fouls Fraser. Fraser delivers, Billing heads it down and Ryan makes the save for another corner.

Brighton make a triple change Connolly, March, and Trossard are coming on. Off go Jahanbakhsh, Bernado and Groß on 60 minutes.

Francis makes a diving header away with Connoly lurking. Dunk has a long shot that Ramsdale holds on to.


Fraser into Callum Wilson and Harry Wilson, but Dunk blocks. Aké makes a clearance.

Brighton have a corner. Dunk is in there and Ramsdale saves with his chest. Fraser is fouled by Trossard. Aké's free kick goes all the way through to Ryan.

Solanke leads the press. Francis fouls Connoly. Maupay, turn and finds room for a shot but Ramsdale makes the save, top corner. 

Callum Wilson, Fraser and Billing and Lerma slices his shot. Webster plays it back to Ryan and he just gets it away in time.

Mooy goes right footed and Ramsdale tips the shot over the bar. 19 minutes to go. Trossard on for Connoly but Aké wins the ball.

Maupay shoots with Francis in the way. Solanke is running strongly, it bounces off a defender.  Callum Wilson rounds the keeper and he's scored 3-0. That's a second assist for Solanke.

Mooy shoots wide. Harry Wilson wins the ball back and Fraser curls a shot inches wide. Stephens runs into Fraser, it's a foul. Fraser into Callum Wilson but it's headed clear.

Fraser wide to Callum Wilson and Ryan falls on the ball in front of Solanke. Brighton not looking when they play out at the back.

Mooy has scored in off the post on 81 minutes. Rico didn't make the block and Mooy hammered it in the goal.

Alzarte and Trossard's shot goes past the post. Bournemouth sub Solanke for Dan Gosling on 85 minutes. 

Harry Wilson is subbed for Lewis Cook on 89 minutes. Lerma is booked for a foul. Corner for Brighton. Akee is being checked for a penalty on Dunk - no penalty.

Ramsdale flaps at it but snatches Maupay's shot, finally falling on it. Francis and Aké got their blocks in well.

Fraser tries to get Callum Wilson in but the keeper is there first. Surman is looking to come on, but there's no time.

Summary
Bournemouth finally get their much needed win. It was hard work even if the score line looked very respectable. The big plus points were the play of Dominic Solanke and Callum Wilson's goal, while Ramsdale continues to be amazing in goal. The clean sheet would have been good, but the more important feeling is to finally have those three points. Bournemouth are still in the bottom three but there is hope.

Bournemouth will lose touch if they can't get something against Brighton

Obviously the table doesn't look great at the moment. It could look a lot worse after Tuesday as well if Bournemouth don't pick up any points. With Burnley beating Leicester and Watford playing Aston Villa on Tuesday night, there are teams that are going to pull away from the bottom and the gap is going to grow, so it is vital Bournemouth hold on to Brighton's tail and pick up some points.
Simon Francis is likely to lead the team and Adam Smith should be at right back.Bournemouth can bring Brighton & Hove Albion right back into the relegation scrap with a win. The two teams are not far apart in terms of skill and quality and Bournemouth have all the advantages of playing at home. Brighton have only won one more match than the Cherries and Eddie Howe's team are the only team Brighton have beaten in their last four games. That just might make Brighton over confident.

It is probably fair to see that it is any three teams from the bottom six clubs now. Bournemouth have to get on terms with West Ham, Aston Villa and Watford as soon as possible and then try and have a better run-in than those teams, if they want to stay up. It is pressure football now and the players have to try and relax and play to their ability and play the match rather than the table, but in some ways it is going to be exciting for them as well as the fans, as every game is going to have something on it now until the end of the season.

If Bournemouth can just pick up three points they will give themselves a chance of making an escape. The first league win of 2020 has to come soon and it has to be used as a springboard to put pressure on the other teams near the bottom. If Bournemouth continue to fade they can't expect other teams to just find a bad period of form. With games to play there is still a chance, but Bournemouth need to keep up with the others hovering just above the relegation zone.Try and enjoy the game tonight - UTCIAD!

The performance that AFCB put in against Norwich was better than what they produced at home against Watford, but the points still didn't come. The disappointment was clear to see and the loss of Steve Cook just after the half hour pretty much scuppered much chance of the Cherries taking the game to Norwich City. Somehow Eddie Howe has to get the players in the right mental space to come out and get a result against Brighton & Hove Albion.
It didn't happen at Norwich, it really has to happen tonight for AFCB.In the past, the Brighton games had been good recovery games for Bournemouth. We tended to win them. But now the balance has changed and Brighton have already beaten Bournemouth on 28 December, so the task is likely to be harder than ever with Brighton expecting hat they can come to Dean Court and put the Cherries under even more pressure.

They could still go on a run to get out of trouble but Eddie Howe needs to see results now not just better performances. The players mustn't worry about missing Steve Cook from the game. We have to get behind Simon Francis and get him focused on getting that clean sheet. All the players have to put in a shift against Brighton and look to win every ball. There can't be anymore slow play, it just isn't doing the Cherries any good in creating chances.

There were a few more chances against Norwich City, but none were taken. There is a real lack of confidence in front of goal. I have said before that I' like to see Sam Surridge involved and perhaps Eddie will give him a proper try this game. But it is really up to the big names to start delivering. Callum Wilson knows he has to get goals and Fraser and Harry Wilson need to provide the assists if they can't get goals themselves. We need more closing from midfield and ball winning and retention. Everyone has to be on their game but that will only happen if Eddie Howe can get the players in the right spot mentally.

Ramsdale is the only one who looks like he's enjoying his football

I was really impressed with Aaron Ramsdale at Norwich City. It wasn't just his saves of which there were many, but it was his attitude. He came over to the fans after the game and was still smiling and thanking them for their support despite the result, and when he was interviewed he was not thinking negatively about the relegation battle, but likened it more to a challenge. He has been used to being in these situations at Chesterfield and AFC Wimbledon and it's unfortunate for him to be in another scrap with the Cherries.Ramsdale up for the fight.It is hard to pull out which was the best save that Aaron made against Norwich, but I think it was the one-on-one with Teemu Pukki. Ramsdale had to be out quick to make it more difficult for the striker and to get the save in when Pukki shot early was outstanding. He really is a tremendous shot stopper and even the save he made before Steve Cook gave away the penalty was a sharp stop.

Ramsdale is certainly up for the fight and I hope that the players talk to him as much as they can as he has the enthusiasm and hunger to do well despite the situation. You can tell that he is enjoying his football and I'm not too sure that too many other Bournemouth players feel the same about football at the moment.

It's not making light of the situation, but it is trying not to let things get you down. We need more of the players to feel confident about their personal game like Ramsdale, if they are going to start to pick up points again. The Cherries are not an awful side, they just need one or two things to start going for them and we'll have to hope that starts on Tuesday night.

Instincts cost Bournemouth

We can be supportive of Steve Cook for the mistake he made against Norwich City, but it is perhaps one of the most costly errors of the season for the Cherries. In hindsight Steve provably would have been best to let the shot from Ondrej Duda go in rather than trying to save it with his hands, as it took Bournemouth down to 10-men and left Pukki to take a penalty, which he scored.
Steve Cook will receive plenty of support, but he'll know it was a
costly decision to try and stop Norwich scoring with his hands. It was like a double punishment and all of Bournemouth's own making. The players didn't go straight into their shell from the goal, which was good. With half-time only 15 minutes away from the incident they reorganised fairly well with Simon Francis coming on, but it was an early bath for Harry Wilson who had been playing well.

It just hasn't happened of late and it's been the same old story. Whether it's Francis, Cook or Travers, mistakes are coming from the defence and unless the players get better at being comfortable in closing down and being on the ball, the goals are going to keep coming. I don't feel that the team closed down enough against Norwich. There were times when they tried from the front, but the midfield was never quite up to speed for Bournemouth and with players not quite being at their best, the Cherries are conceding to much ground to the opposition.

It wasn't a big surprise that Norwich City took the lead, but it was annoying in the way it came about. Steve Cook now misses the next game and Bournemouth will surely bring Simon Francis in against Brighton. The team needs a bit of luck and good fortune, but it's hard to see where that is coming from.

Match ReportNorwich City 1  v 0 AFCB17 January 2020Attendance: 26,781 Is the writing on the wall for AFCB - another defeat cement's AFCB's second-bottom position Everyone knew how important this game was. The loser was not going to come out pf it well and in one moment of instinct Steve Cook made the fatal mistake of saving a shot from Duda with his hands and the game was lost.  Pukki scored from the spot and Bournemouth toiled to stay in the game. There was endeavour when Norwich also saw Ben Godfrey sent off and it was 10 against 10 for the last quester of an hour, but the Cherries had another blank in front of goal and damaging defeat was clear on the faces of all the players at the end of the match.  A long old journey.Callum Wilson given a start and Ramsdale came back into the team along with Diego Rico. I should mention hear that t was really annoying that Bournemouth's players were made to warm up at the opposite end from where there supporters were, unnecessary Norwich! Ramsdale had a good early kick that found touch. Fraser put a cross in that Callum Wilson got his head to but not enough power to beat Krul.

Norwich got their first corner on six minutes. Duda almost got Pukki in, but the Cherries were given a goal kick.

Adam Smith intercepted well and put a cross in but Aarons touched it back to the keeper.

Rico puts a square ball in but no Bournemouth player was near it. Billing then shot over from distance on 10 minutes.

Callun Wilson won a fee kick. Rico took it and Gosling headed over.

Buendia to Pukki, shot blocked then McLean has a shot blocked. Aarons crosses from the right but Buendia heads wide at the far post on 15 minutes. Gosling puts Harry Wilson in, but the flag goes up.

Pukki on the break runs it out of play. Adam Smith clears and Tettey shoots wise in the volley from 20 yards.

Adam Smith wins a corner. It comes out to Rico but Krul makes the catch.

Two minutes of added time. Krul punches.

Gosling clears from Pukki before Buendia shoots wide. Buendia fouls Rico and is carded.

Cantwell to Byram and Norwich have a corner. Aké wins the header, and Billing puts it out. Ramsdale catches it from another corner.

Wilson runs into trouble. Buendia's shot is blocked.

Fraser pulls it across the box and Wilson misses it! He just slipped and took his eye off it. 65 minutes gone.

Cantwell's shot goes out for a corner. Gosling battles well. Buendia plays Pukki in on 69 minutes and Ramsdale saves low to his left.

Fraser hammers it against Lerma and straight to Pukki. Bournemouth just can't find a pass.

Aarons crosses it comes to Tettey and Ramsdale saves low to his right. Burnedia turns past everyone but Ramsdale denies him what would have been a great goal.

Godfrey fouls Wilson and is carded. Its red. Duda is off and Hanley comes on after 78 minutes.

Lerma is off and Solanke comes on after 78 minutes.

Rico crosses it's kept out. Bournemouth won a corner. Solanke wins another corner,

Francis knocks it on to to Goslings, but straight to the keeper. Wilson wins a free kick. Aké heads it,  tipped over.

The players really upped their game in the last 15 minutes when Norwich were reduce to 10-men, but it just wasn't enough. The will is there but the ability is lacking at the moment.
