Bournemouth's first away win of 2020 – not enough to keep them up
Match ReportEverton 1 v 3 AFCB26 July 2020
It was going to be a tight finish with three clubs fighting for one place and just three points and goal difference between them. Bournemouth went on the front foot from the start against Everton and dominated play going 0-1 up, from a Josh King penalty. Although Everton pulled a goal back, a header from Solanke restored the Cherries' lead before half-time. Everton made changes and came at Bournemouth in the second half. Bournemouth always looked like they might get another though, and Junior Stanislas showed a bit of personal magic to make it 1-3. The game was won, but counting on West Ham to beat Aston Villa was one result to many. Bournemouth's five year Premier League stay came to an end.
Josh King puts Bournemouth ahead 0-1Bournemouth made three changes for the last game of the season. In came Dominic Solanke, Adam Smith and Dan Gosling. Dropped to the bench were Philip Billing, Junior Stanislas and Jack Stacey. Nathan Aké also made it back to the bench. Eddie Howe had left plenty of fire power on the bench with, Harry Wilson, Arnaut Danjuma, Junior Stanislas and Sam Surridge if Bournemouth needed a goal.

SummaryWe couldn't have asked for anymore from Bournemouth. The players gave it their all and it was great to see Solanke get another goal. He was almost the hero. To win away at Everton for the first time and first away win of 2020 was a great effort. Junior Stanislas almost put the gloss on the score to add to King's penalty and Solanke's headed goal, but as comfortable as this win was, Bournemouth have been uncomfortable all season. Too few goals, conceding too many and a lack of fight in the early restart games have tripped Bournemouth up. It's the Championship now. Perhaps a rebuild will be good for the club and some of the high earners we will say farewell to.

Can Bournemouth come out smiling at Everton?
Well, here it is. The last day of the season 2029/20 and Bournemouth have to get a win at Everton to have any hope of staying in the Premier League. Bournemouth are not favourites to beat the drop, but they are still in it and all Bournemouth can do is try and win their game.
Will we see last day heroics for Bournemouth? As fans, we will be going through all the emotions and ups and down in 90 minutes. It would just be typical for Bournemouth to win the game and still not stay up, but we have to cheer the lads on. Getting a first away win in 2020 could yet save the team, and it is great that Bournemouth at least have a chance on the last day, which we didn't think was possible after the Southampton defeat.
While Everton have a great home record, Bournemouth only need to win by a single goal to be in the shake up to stay up. If Bournemouth are level or behind at half-time, we know that our chance of survival is going to be unlikely. But we could also see Bournemouth be ahead and the players desperate to know how the other games are going. The pressure will be intense.

Eddie Had a Dream eBook version -£7.99!It is possible that Watford, Aston Villa and Bournemouth could all lose their last game and that would be probably the worst way of going down. I kind of feel like we have been waiting for the final curtain for weeks, as Bournemouth haven't done well enough since the restart, but the way the door has stayed open just gives me the crazy feeling that Bournemouth could still do it.

We need to see Bournemouth play as well as they did against Man City to get a result. It is easy to say, but the players know they can play well and Everton are not Man City. The formation shouldn't be a big factor with Everton likely to play 4-4-2, just like Bournemouth tend to do. It is down to motivation and execution on the day. Bournemouth shouldn't need any more motivation than staying in the league, and if the highly unlikely results do come in for Bournemouth we can get ready to have a wild party on Sunday night! UTCIAD!

Rival Lines: "Ancelotti was not going to turn us into world-beaters overnight," says RBM
Rival LinesMatch Preview: Everton v AFCBBlogger Interview: Royal Blue Mersey
twitter: @chandler98_
For the final Rival Lines of the season, I was contacted by Matthew Chandler of the Royal Blue Mersey website. Everton have stabilise din mid-table but perhaps they expect better now that they have a highly acclaimed manager. While Eddie Howe has faced Ancelotti before in a friendly match against Real Madrid, to be hie Everton is rather a must on Sunday.
CC: What have Everton fans felt about Ancelotti since his arrival?
RBM: Almost unanimous support for him, I'd say. We were so tepid and mentally fragile under Marco Silva that we realise Ancelotti was not going to turn us into world-beaters overnight, and the squad is still a poor squad, but he's made us harder to beat and more resilient. Fans just want this slog of a season out of the way so we can start looking forward to what will hopefully be a better campaign next year.

CC: Theo Walcott did Bournemouth and some other teams a big favour with his last few minutes goal against Aston Villa. Is he really good enough though for the Everton fans?
RBM: Hard to say. Walcott works hard but his end product just often isn't there, not to mention he's 31 now so is unlikely to drastically improve from here. He probably shouldn't be starting for us next season but there are other players who need getting rid of more urgently this summer. I'd be content with him staying as a squad player.
CC: Where do Everton need to strengthen to finish higher next season?
RBM: In central midfield, above all else, because we haven't really had one this season. It's just been one big gaping void in our team for much of it. Gylfi Sigurdsson is finished and can't run, Tom Davies probably just isn't good enough unfortunately, Jean-Philippe Gbamin was supposed to replace the excellent Idrissa Gueye following his PSG move but has been injured since August, Fabian Delph has been a disaster, and André Gomes will take time to get going after that horrific injury. In fact, for some of the season, our best midfielder has looked like being Mason Holgate, who has also probably been our best central defender. So an overhaul is needed there.
I'd also be after probably two wingers, a right-back to be Seamus Coleman's long-term successor, and a new goalkeeper, because Jordan Pickford is totally unreliable.
Eddie Had a Dream -now just 9.99!CC: What is happening about the new ground for Everton?
RBM: It was projected to be finished by 2023, but it remains to be seen how much that will be held up by coronavirus. The plans along Liverpool's waterfront all look spectacular and have been carried out with constant consultation with supporters, which has been heartening. Though, the stadium architect Dan Meis left the project last month which, having built up a strong rapport with fans, was disappointing. I'm sure that won't have a disastrous effect on the entire project, though.
CC: Who has been Everton's player of the season in your view?
RBM: Richarlison. Took a while to get going but has been consistently one of Everton's best players for much of the season. Closely followed by Holgate, who only broke into the team in late October but has probably been Everton's most-improved player.
CC: Everton really got up for the Liverpool derby in June, but do you feel that Everton have got after other teams as well since the restart?
RBM: Probably not, but I think it's a combination of a sub-par squad and tired legs, to be honest. Like I alluded to before, it's hard to win games when your midfield is basically bypassed. You need legs to press so aggressively game after game; Everton don't have that. Plus, the necessary evil of playing multiple games each week since the restart hasn't helped the side, either.

CC: Everton are unbeaten at home this calendar year. So, is it a good time to play Bournemouth at Goodison on the last day of the season, knowing we need a win to have any chance to stay up?
RBM: I have to say I'm fairly confident about beating Bournemouth. Not only because Bournemouth are in such a predicament, but because we're unbeaten at Goodison since Ancelotti's arrival and have been pretty good at seeing off the non-top 6 sides under him, certainly at home. The issue will be whether Bournemouth are simply more motivated because they must win, and there's not much riding on this game for Everton besides pride. We saw against fellow strugglers Aston Villa last week at Goodison how Everton struggled to match their intensity there. They must learn from that game and be stronger here.
CC: Which Bournemouth player do you most fear about spoiling the last day of the season for Everton?
RBM: I like Callum Wilson and Josh King and both have struck against Everton before, so even if they're obvious choices as strikers, I'd go with them. But Everton do have a knack of conceding to forwards who barely score, so maybe Dominic Solanke should be the one to worry us.
CC: What is your score prediction for the game?
RBM: 3-1 Everton (sorry!). I just think Bournemouth will have to go for it and can see Everton picking them off, not least because Bournemouth's defence has leaked so many goals this season. It's not nice to relegate teams, but I would suggest that it won't be this game that really sent Bournemouth down over the course of this season. Eddie Howe was my initial choice to replace Silva before Ancelotti became available, though, and I'm sure you'll bounce back under him.
CC: Some great views from Matthew on Everton and Bournemouth's predicament. I don't know what will happen on Sunday, but the omens are not good when you look at Everton's home record. But if we need a positive feeling we need to go back to last September when Bournemouth last played Everton. A 3-1 win away might not be possible, but Bournemouth have to try and beat their away form duck in 2020 and it might not be too late for them if they can do it in this game. To read more of Matthew's Everton thoughts, visit Royal Blue Mersey where you will also see Cherry Chimes answer some questions ahead of the game on opposition view.

AFCB still have everything to play for
This is it then. One game and a definite must win against Everton to stand any chance of staying in the Premier League. Lose this one and there is no excuses, Bournemouth will have had their opportunities. All we can ask is that the players pick up three points. Anything after that is down to bad luck if Villa or Watford pick up points or a point. Bournemouth should have done more earlier.
Bournemouth have to give it one more go.It is surprising that it has come down to the last game. I don't think many Bournemouth fans would have seen the team only pick up four points from the last eight games, and to still be without an away win in 2020. It would be a great time to get rid of that away record, and just to reach 34 points would help the players go into the next season knowing they did all they could on the last day to try and stay up.

The stress and nerves should really be gone now for this game. Bournemouth have a clear directive what to do and the ayers know they either do it now or will be down if they can't beat Everton. I'd rather the team had drawn level with Watford and Aston Villa on 34 points already, but this way Bournemouth are the underdogs and the pressure is really on Aston Villa and West Ham, who have it all to lose, if they put in poor performances.
I am sure Eddie Howe will tell his players to look at it in that way. A win is the object of the game. Whatever comes after that is either a bonus or something that we couldn't do anything about, so the players can't worry about it. If the boys go out in that frame of mind we may see more of the flowing football that we saw at the end of the game against Man City. If the shackles are off, it might surprise a few people how well Bournemouth can play.

Eddie Had a Dream -now just 9.99!It will be strange to see the players either in agony or ecstasy at Goodison Park come the end of play. But perhaps we should be thankful that the team did pick up some points against Spurs and Leicester, which was unexpected out of all the games that Bournemouth had to play since the restart. It is those points that have given the team an outside chance of staying up.

There's much to like the Championship
While Bournemouth fans might be hanging on in hope for a reprieve on Sunday and another season in the Premier League, I thought it might be prudent to see what life in the Championship might bring and some positives about football in the lower divisions.
A bit more of this will be okay. The first thing I'd say is that there is more chance of success in the Championship. There are three promotion places up for grabs and the season always goes on forever, with 46 games and the play-offs to keep teams interested into May. We can balance that with the fact that three teams are relegated, but hopefully Bournemouth would be more occupied with the other end of the table.
While the Championship will no doubt consider adding VAR, it is not there at the moment and the problems that we have had this season may well defer it for another season in the Championship. Goal line technology was introduced to the Championship since 2017-18, so we'll still get that I'd imagine. The other decisions will be left up to the referee and assistant linesman, so we will have plenty of chances to get angry at the officials again!

Eddie Had a Dream eBook version -£7.99!There will be some reasonable local rivalries to play as well with Reading, Bristol City and Millwall on the away ground lists. We might also get some London teams staying in the division. QPR will definitely be there and Brentford and/or Fulham could be on our road maps, even if we won't be visiting Chartlon Athletic, unless it is in one of the cups.

There is also the chance to visit old cauldron's of dislike, such a Nottingham Forest, the windy unpleasantness of the Bet365 (Britannia stadium) and lengthy trips up north to Preston and Middlesbrough. What is not to like?
We may well see many more new and young players who haven't cost the earth and it could be that we get to see more emerging talent from the academy, like Sam Surridge, Gavin Kilkenny and Nnamdi Ofoborh.
Okay, the Premier League has been an exciting home for five years and Bournemouth might not get back there if things don't work out on Sunday. But Bournemouth have created some history in the Premier League and we have enjoyed our time there I think. Wherever the team is next year, there will be plenty of football to look forward to. I have probably only scratched the surface of reasons why the Championship is a great place to play football, so by all means add your own reasons for liking it in the comments.

Ramsdale has been unbelievable this season
There was one player who left the pitch after the Southampton game that didn't deserve to be on the losing side. Aaron Ramsdale had again proved that he is a superb keeper and despite seeing more than 60 goals go past his this season, he has kept the number of goals down in what is a struggling team.
Ramsdale has done his best this season.Considering that this is Ramsdale's first season in the Premier League, it is incredible how well he has played. He is more like a senior player in the way he carries himself and responds to adversity. Bournemouth fans were fearing the worst on the hour when Danny Ings was given a penalty to take. Ramsdale was sensational though. The stop in Ing's run didn't trigger Ramsdale to move, and to reach the shot to his left was pretty miraculous.
Eddie Had a Dream eBook version -£7.99!It should have inspired the players to go and fight even harder to get the goal to stop Southampton winning the game. I do feel that if the Bournemouth crowd had been in the ground, the save would have had a bigger impact on how the rest of the half played out. Bournemouth just couldn't get the upper hand on Southampton. It probably says something about the way Southampton have been playing - hat's off to them, they turned their season around.

Aaron has made a huge number of saves, but he can't save Bournemouth's season by himself. It needs a better defence in front of him and better goal scorers up front. He may be lucky and get that against Everton, but I'm not counting on it. Whatever happens, this season has seen the emergence of Aaron Ramsdale as a great keeper, and in a season with very few positives, it is good that Bournemouth have at least one player who we know we have to try and hold on to for next season.

Bournemouth have to hope for one more chance
Tonights night's games take on even more importance for Bournemouth, if that is possible, after the defeat to Southampton. In a way, looking at the bottom teams of Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Watford, they are all as bad as each other. None of them deserve being saved, and to me, it wouldn't be unfair to see all three along with Norwich City being relegated.
AFCB still hope they have something to play for come next weekend. But one team out of Watford, Aston Villa and Bournemouth will survive. They may even survive on 34 points and with less than 10 wins in the season. That is looking quite likely now, as none of these teams has found winning easy. If the season does go to the last day, with Bournemouth still involved with a chance of staying up, then it is perhaps not a great advert for the Premier League. Yes it will be exciting, because any one of three teams could stay up, but it shows how poor four teams are compared to the rest of the league.
Coastal Garden Buildings
There may be satisfaction if Bournemouth stay up. But the team will need a drastic overhaul no matter what happens. Of course, Watford can take it completely out of Bournemouth's hands, if they get a point against Man City. It will all end there and then, if they do. But if Villa and Watford fail to get above 34 points this season, Bournemouth fans will have another nail biting weekend to suffer.
I am not sure if I want it to be all over. The suffering is never ending and in a way, it will be a relief when the season is over. I have been predicting relegation ever since Bournemouth lost away to Norwich City. They are bad enough to be relegated. If they stay up it will only be via the back door now. That might be good enough for Eddie Howe and the AFCB board, but this season has been anything other than fun to watch as a Bournemouth supporter. Yes, we are in the top league and it has been a pleasure to be a part of it for five seasons. But is it wrong to want more? Have Bournemouth overstayed their welcome? We may find out on tonight. Then again we might have to wait until next weekend. Drawling a line under this season might not quite be done this evening.

Harry Wilson puts his hands up
One could say it has not been Harry Wilson's finest hour in the last few games for AFC Bournemouth. First a missed chance to win the game or should I say, had a shot saved against Tottenham in the final minutes, and then a handball to give Southampton a penalty. I wouldn't be surprised if Harry Wilson wants to head up to the M6 and onto Liverpool as quick as he scamper.
Harry Wilson puts his arms in the air at just the wrong moment in the Southampton match.I wouldn't say Harry has a bad first season in the Premier League, but we have come to know his limitations. He will have time to recover and play in teams with more confidence than AFCB. His time on the south coast will be invaluable to him, but Jurgen Klopp won't be hoodwinked. Harry Wilson still has loads to learn and he is not yet a reliable performer over 90 minutes, even if he has a wonderful free kick on him.

Even if Bournemouth stay up, I can't see them putting in a bid for Harry. He has scored some good goals, but has not defended well. I am not sure his game will really have come on in this first Premier League season, and it may take him back a step or two. It will have kept him in Ryan Giggs mind though for the Euros next year and Harry Wilson will seek more exposure next season with a Premier League club I expect and hope for more Welsh call ups.
Eddie Had a Dream -now just 9.99!One of the teams coming up would probably be pleased to take Wilson. Bournemouth need a more rounded player with quicker thought patterns when they are in their own box. I still can't work out why he jumped with his arms up as he did in the Southampton game. It was a typically mindless thing to do, which school players get told off for. But we have seen Adam Smith give a penalty away as well in recent weeks - it happens. The main point for Harry will be not to do it next time. For Bournemouth there is unlikely to be a next time, after tonight's games.

We know VAR is inconsistent and Bournemouth have come off harshly on such penalty decisions. It is the panic that the players seem to have when they are in their own penalty box that cause the problems. Their isn't enough calmness and clearness of though to defend well with these players yet.
As for Harry Wilson, I wish him well next season. He will get better. Loan moves are always a balance of positives and negatives and Harry Wilson's move last summer might not look quite as valuable now as it did back then.

Lack of fire power catches Bournemouth out
The Cherries managed 11 shots against Southampton, with three on target, which just wasn't enough to get that important goal. There might not have been much between the teams, but the Saints had the goal scoring Danny Ings and of course it hurts that he was brought up in AFCB's academy.
Bournemouth fail to hit the target frequently and
Saints out more woe on Bournemouth's bid to stay up.Bournemouth contributed to their own defeat. Gone was the flowing passing of the second half against man City. Bournemouth were pensive and troubled by the occasion. They knew they could afford to slip up, but they looked lacking in quality and it eventually started to effect confidence.

Eddie Had a Dream eBook version -£7.99!I am not sure what happened to David Brooks. He might has well not have been out there for his contribution, which just isn't like Brooks. Perhaps he didn't feel well, but Eddie Howe had to change things at half-time. His replacement Harry Wilson found it just as hard going, when he gave a penalty away. We wanted our attacking players to be causing up the other end of the pitch, but nothing was running for the strikers.
Josh King had difficulty staying on his feet for most of the time. Callum Wilson wasn't at his cutting-edge best in front of goal. With Stanislas unable to show his quality from previous games and Bournemouth playing Lewis Cook on the right after half-time, the team just wasn't properly balanced going forward.
Even when Surridge gave a glimmer of hope by stabbing home a close range shot, the VAR Gods were not on Bournemouth's side. Eddie Howe will realise that he hasn't had a good enough strike force this season, when he looks back on events. Solanke did his best when he came on, but he didn't hit any shots with enough power or accuracy to trouble McCarthy in Saints' goal.

The supply route we can argue was also not good enough with Billing and Lerma unable to make telling contributions going forward. So Bournemouth have to consider that they have only scored seven goals since the restart in eight games. How was that going to be enough when the team has only managed one clean sheet in that time? If Bournemouth are relegated there can be no complaints. They haven't been good enough.

On the verge of relegation – Bournemouth suffer 0-2 defeat to Southampton
Match ReportAFCB 0 v 2 Southampton19 July 2020
Bournemouth nudged closer to relegation with Southampton winning 0-2 at Dean Court. Things are out of Bournemouth's hands and Danny Ings a former Bournemouth player put the Cherries on the verge of relegation with his first half goal. Despite a fantastic penalty save from Aaron Ramsdale to prevent Ings netting his second, Bournemouth couldn't find a way of scoring. Sam Surrdige thought he had done it as a super sub, but his first Premier League goal was chalked off when Callum Wilson was offside. Just to really kick Bournemouth, they lost another goal with Ché Adams denting Bournemouth's goal difference again in added time.
Eddie Howe made two changes with David Brooks and Callum Wilson replacing Dan Gosling and Domonic Solanke.

SummaryIt wasn't to be was it? Bournemouth are cruelly denied an equaliser and are published by a late, late goal to lose 0-2 and give Watford and Aston Villa a biggerlifeline. Bournemouth can only get 34 pints and will rely on goals to keep them up. Three shots is all the Cherries could manage on target. While Sam Surridge almost had the goal to give Bournemouth fans hope of a point, VAR has kicked us in the teeth again. It feels worse as the Danny Ings goal really secured the Southampton win, and the disappointment of having a goal ruled out probably led to the conceding of the second goal. Bournemouth are still alive but Tuesday night could be curtains.

This is a fan’s personal view of AFC Bournemouth from the outside looking in. It reports on the daily official activities reported by the club and comments made by individual fans on social media and fanbase websites. Life as an AFCB fan is never dull. As a life-long supporter of the Cherries, it is the friendliness of the staff, fans and my enthusiasm for the club that inspired me to write this blog. https://afcbchimes.blogspot.com/
