Bournemouth blows West Ham away 3-5 to win Betway Cup

Jason Tindall has won his first match as AFCB's manager and he has picked up the Betway Cup in a sparkling game at the London Stadium that saw eight goals. What was good to see about this Bournemouth performance was that everyone wanted the ball. I just wonder that with some of the big names not playing for the Cherries anymore, perhaps there is a better team spirit now? It feels like the cobb webs of last season have finally been cut away and a fresher looking Cherries are emerging, battled scared but ready to put right some of the wrongs of last season.

Bournemouth sharpens its shooting at the London Stadium

Bournemouth picked quite an experimental team for this Betway Cup match. Jordan Archer won his first appearance for the first team in goal having trained with the team in midweek. It was very exciting to see Danjuma also given free rein to play up next to Solanke, which gave him plenty of opportunities to stretch his legs. Stanislas too looked menacing on the right, while the left side was bolstered by Adam Smith and Diego Rico.

AFCB: Archer, Stacey, Simpson, Mepham (Anthony 59), Rico (Zemura 77), Stanislas (Kilkenny 77), Lerma (Billing 45), L Cook (Jodan 77), A Smith (Pugh 63), Danjuma (Gosling 45), Solanke (Ofoborh).

Subs: Dennis, Jordan, Zemura, Ofoborh, Billing, Gosling, Kilkenny, Pugh, Anthony.

West Ham: Martn, Johnson, Diopp, Ogbonna (Wilshere 63), Noble (Balbuena 63), Fornals (Snodgrass 82), Lanzini, Bowen (Masuaka), Antonio, (Anderson 62) Haller (Silva 82)Subs: Trott, Balbuena, Fredericks, Masuaku, Wilshere, Snodgrass, Anderson, Coventry, Silva, Cullen

Match Description
Danjuma beats two on halfway and has Ogbonna to get past on the left. He cuts inside and firest into the far corner Bournemouth 0-1 up in just five minutes. Adam Smith breaks and Solanke makes it 0-2 from the six-yard box on 17 minutes. Bournemouth is playing with confidence and poise that was absent during the last six months of last season.

Rico was excellent at bringing the ball out of defence. Mepham and Simpson were assured at the back and it was a partnership that would perhaps only be back-up when the league got going but it looked really strong.

Johnson was subbed by Fredericks on 25 minutes. West Ham was winning the odd free kick but had not players looking to get on the end of balls into the box.

Lanzini is subbed for Josh Cullen on 32 minutes. Great ball in from Stanislas on the right and it falls just behind Danjuma after the defender missed it. That could have been 0-3, so unlucky.

A blocked shot bounced up for Bowen who pulls a goal back for West Ham on 32 minutes 1-2.

Antonio gets in behind but can't find a West Ham shirt the ball is out on the left and comes back in. Bowen has found space and heads in to make it 2-2 on 40 minutes. Bournemouth's defence was asleep there.

Danjuma has a pop from distance, but Martin has it covered. Antonio hits a shot on the turn and Archer is down to his left to save.

Lerma loses possession to Bowen, but the pass is overhit and Bournemouth has a goal kick. Danjuma has given it away.

Second half
Philip Billing is on for Lerma. Simpson's header drops for Haller, but he volleys high and over. Gosling is also on for Danjuma. Gosling plays a ball in for Slanke but it's too strong.

Gosling in for Solanke with Martin committed, but Solanke can't find a pass with the keeper out of his goal. Stanislas is playing upfront now with Solanke.

Smith puts a deep cross in but Solanke can't make anything of it. Simpson has to get across to stop a Hammers breakaway. Billing cuts it back Square, Stanislas dummies and Gosling hits the shot which is deflected for a corner. Great move from Bournemouth.

Both teams are pitting the tackles in. Billing and Solanke run through Solanke beats the keeper but can't find a shot. He shoots now and hits the post. It's back out to Billing, his shot is blocked. Gosling now comes in and blasts the ball off the top of the crossbar and into the net on 57 minutes 2-3. Bournemouth has the lead back.

Antonio is fouled by Gosling, Mepham is subbed and Solanke. Anthony is on and Ofoborh. I am not sure where all this precise finishing is coming from but Bournemouth looks sharp in front of the goal.

Anthony down the left and Adam Smith takes over rifling a shot into the bottom right corner on 62 minutes. It's 2-4 now.

Anderson on from Antonio. Ogbonna is replaced by Wilshere on 63 minutes. Noble is also replied by Balbuena and Bowen is off for Mauwaku.

Marc Pugh is on for Adam Smith. Gosling and Jayden Anton makes room fr a shot and picks out the top corner of the net 5-2. An absolute rocket!

Pugh tests the West Ham defence with a good cross. Gosling wins a free kick in a good position - Stanislas will take it. The shot is blocked for a corner. Billing back to Stanislas and Lewis Cook shoots wide

Kilkenny and Jordan come on for Stanislas and Lewis Cook on 77 minutes Rico is off too and Zemura replaces him.

Gosling has won another free kick. Fornals is subbed for Snodgrass. Haller is replaced by Silva as well on 82 minutes.

West Ham has a corner. Felipe Anderson gets a near-post header in that beats Archer to make the score 3-5. Ofoborgh on the overlap with Anthony can't find a green shirt.

Stacey concedes a free kick. Balbuena can only hit a weak shot at Archer. Anthony is offside. There are just three minutes of added time to go.

Anderson is caught offside. Bournemouth wins their first trophy since winning the Championship in 2015.

Adam Smith goes to collect the Betway CupSummary
It was great to see a controlled performance from a Bournemouth side. JT has won his first match as a Bournemouth manager and picks up the Betway Cup to boot. There were plenty of positives about the way Bournemouth played so freely and their finishing was spot on for most of the 90 minutes. The pick of the goals was provably Gosling and Anthony's, but King and Wilson weren't really missed. Marc Pugh made a return to a Bournemouth team and many new players from the U21s looked like they could step up this coming season.

Bournemouth can expect a barrage of bids for strikers

The dice have been rolled for Callum Wilson and it wasn't Spurs, Man United, or Newcastle that have stirred the pot, but Aston Villa has seen the first bid for Callum rejected. According to SkySports, Bournemouth has rejected a £15m bid from Villa for Wilson and, it's likely, this will only add more fuel to the fire with other clubs now alerted to the fact that the bidding war has begun.
Could a deal for Callum Wilson be sorted this week?
I imagine it is quite a nervy time for the player. While he has the ultimate decision of agreeing his own personal terms with clubs, he could well find that Bournemouth agrees to a transfer fee and he is forced to go to talk with a club, despite wanting a move elsewhere. Callum Wilson would surely love to play Champions League or at least European football, but if Aston Villa is the first to make a formal bid, then it will be intriguing to see whether the big six clubs are interested in Callum or not.

I am not sure what Aston Villa was hoping for by making such a low bid. Perhaps they are trying to force the hands of others to see if they are keen on Callum? Anything under £25m is unlikely to attract any interest from Bournemouth, as Callum signed a new contract at the start of last season. Whether Aston Villa will make a serious bid will reveal the club's true intentions. They won't get Callum for a steal.
Advertisement Coastal Garden Buildings
Callum may have to wait on the likes of Spurs to see other sales go through before they can respond with a bid for him, but Newcastle United or West Ham United might feel forced to act now. The wages that Wilson said he wanted may not have frightened of clubs, but the heavyweights have refrained from bidding early.Advertisement Eddie Had a Dream eBook version -£7.99!
The transfer money is what AFCB will need fairly soon though if they do want to reinvest in new players. JT will want to make the squad his and put his mark on it, and he'll only do that by bringing in new signings, or else AFCB will be viewed as Eddie Howe's depleted squad.
In other news, AFCB plays West Ham today at the London Stadium.

How badly does Bournemouth need to keep Daniels?

The door has been left open for Charlie Daniels to prove himself this season, but the Bournemouth Echo reports that it doesn't believe Charlie has changed with the first team squad yet. Bournemouth could be going into the new season with Diego Rico and Adam Smith covering the left-back position, although Lloyd Kelly is also able to play there. Does that make Daniels a passenger?
Will Charlie be a part of AFCB's 2020-21 season? With Simon Francis and Andre Surman being let go, it is maybe only because Charlie has been out for nearly a season that he is being given more time. But Bournemouth doesn't have time to wait on many players as the season will soon be underway, and we know how damaging it can be from last season to go into a campaign with players still recovering from long-term injuries.
Advertisement Ebook version of The Disrupted season £9.99

Personal sentiment should only go so far for players by the club. It is a business and the best options for the club have to be considered if it wants to be successful. I'd love Charlie Daniels to come back and be as good as ever, but he has a big challenge ahead of him. The drop-down to the Championship won't make it any easier, only a different kind of challenge. Daniels will have to be as strong as ever to contribute to such a long and arduous campaign.
Advertisement Coastal Garden Buildings

If there is any doubt about Charlie's optimum levels then it may be the time that Bournemouth suggests that he too moves on. That sounds harsh, but Bournemouth has to be fully focussed on winning points in the new season and JT needs to go into the season knowing the full strength of his squad.

Advertisement Eddie Had a Dream -now just 9.99!Charlie Daniels has never let Bournemouth down. That could be what the club is relying on. He has met every challenge to give him competition for his place in the team and as a battler, Daniels is the kind of layer you should want in your team. Arguably, Bournemouth didn't have enough battlers last season, so just how badly do the Cherries need to keep Daniels? JT has the chance to break with the past. However, I'm not sure he will choose to let Daniels go as the player has had the most traumatic of times, and deserves his chance to fight for a place.

King happy to keep a low profile

It seems that everyone is talking about Josh King apart from himself. He told Norway Today that he wasn't looking to make headlines. The problem is the interest in Josh King is likely to reach a fever pitch, as Tottenham Hotspur was reported by Alex Crook to be having meetings with Josh King's agent in London.

Josh King keeps quite on a potential move.Talking to Norway Today, Josh is more concerned with whether he will start for Norway in their important UEFA Nation's League qualifiers against Austria and Northern Ireland.  While Lars Lagerbäck has improved Norway's performances, he also has a wider choice of forwards. Erling Braut Haaland and Alexander Sørloth could provide competition for King who didn't have his best season for Bournemouth.
Advertisement Coastal Garden BuildingsWhether King is pleased that Tottenham is believed to be in talks and hoping to make a deal was not remarked upon. But King must be getting concerned that a bid has not been made for him yet. He could find that a club comes in for him at the last minute, but Manchester United don't look to be making as much noise for his signature as they did back in January. King still has a year left on his contract at Bournemouth, but it would be a big surprise if either King or Callum Wilson failed to move this window.

Advertisement https://amzn.to/32Gsnd2 The Spurs move is probably not the move King most wants, but if Man United is not going to come in for him again he will still be looking to move on I'm sure. Manchester Evening News reported that King was disappointed about the transfer falling through last January, but United might not be willing to deal with Bournemouth, having been snubbed by the Cherries earlier this year,

Fab new third kit for the Cherries

AFC Bournemouth launched their new UMBRO third kit last night, and it is a great blend of white and mint green trim with a new local sponsor MSP Capital of Poole. The kit comes with mint green shorts with white trim and looks pretty neat to me. I think it will be very popular.
How long before we see new shirts being worn around Dean Court?UMBRO has done well at blending in the sponsor logo and their logo probably looks best on this third kit than it will on the home and away kit, where it is white, as seen here. Kris Temple, of BBC Radio Solent, was quick to tweet that he is pleased to see a local company on the shirt again, and there is something about having a local community company supporting the club in this way that links the club with the fans.

Advertisement https://amzn.to/32Gsnd2

The swagger of the Premier League may have gone, but in a way, the club seems less boastful in being more closely tied with a company that is not a major Betting firm, and the Vitality sponsorship, which is still with the stadium, never really felt unique to Bournemouth when it was on the shirt.
Advertisement Eddie Had a Dream -now just 9.99!Opinions from the fans seem to be very much a thumbs up for the new kit.

Bournemouth need new strikers

There is no hiding that fact that Bournemouth are going to need a couple of new strikers. Jason Tindall may be pleased with holding on to Dominic Solanke and Sam Surridge, but are they really enough fire power to see Bournemouth win promotion to the Premier League?
Solanke and Surridge need competition for places if King and Wilson are on their way out.In their first outing together against Benfica, we didn't exactly see Solanke and Surridge causing a multitude of problems for Benfica's defence. It was mainly down to Danjuma to frighten the life out of the Portuguese side with his raw pace.

Advertisement Ebook: pre-order now at AmazonBournemouth are expected to sell Josh King and Callum Wilson and they will need to buy extremely well to replace that type of quality. Personally, I don't see anything wrong in accepting Newcastle's offer of Matt Ricthie and Dwight Gayle for Callum Wilson along with some cash, but if Wilson is more set on Spurs then I don't see that deal coming off. Aston Villa are also said to be keen on Wilson, but I can't see that deal topping the Spurs interest either.

Advertisement Coastal Garden Buildings
Bournemouth need strikers that are sed to the Championship and that won't cost mage bucks. They could look to the strikers at Championship clubs like Cardiff, Swansea, Preston, Nottingham Forest or Brentford, for example, that did well last time out, or they could look at Premier League strikers that aren't getting much of a runout like Connor Wickham at Palace or Origi at Liverpool. Such players might not want to drop down a league, but Bournemouth have to find some players to give them more fire power because they don't have enough without Callum and Josh.

A 2-1 first defeat for Tindall's AFCB

Jason Tindall's Bournemouth played their first friendly fixture of the summer. It was the first game under JT's management with Bournemouth going down 2-1 to Benfica. The Cherries played well, but couldn't keep the long range shooting of Benfica out. All the goals came in the first 21 minutes with Benfica's Adel Taarabt scoring first after 14 minutes. But Bournemouth equalised in the next minute, when Rico cut a ball back for Danjuma to slot home. Begovic was beaten a second time when Everton swivelled to score with a curling shot. It was Aranut Danjuma who sparkled for Bournemouth in a side that looked deprived of a fair few big names.
Danjuma played well enough to probably interest Benfica
The surprise pick of the team was to see Asmir Begovic as the first goalkeeper choice with Mark Travers left on the bench. Whether Tindall felt that playing a Champion's League team needed a n experienced keeper, or whether he was wanting to shield Travers in the first game under his reign is unknown, but it would be quite a statement if Begovic was keeper for Bournemouth's first game against Blackburn Rovers in a few week's time. Mark Travers did get to come on in the second half and did no harm to his campaign with a clean sheet.

Advertisement Ebook - available to pr-order for 12 September releaseCallum Wilson was out with an Achilles injury and no doubt awaiting the phone to call from Tottenham, while David Brooks was said to have an ankle complaint, which might suggest that he is also expecting a call from Manchester United soon. The only regular to otherwise feel perhaps aggrieved with being on the bench were Philip Billing and Dan Gosling, as Lewis Cook and Jefferson Lerma started in central midfield. Adam Smith was also preferred to Jack Stacey at right back.

Advertisement Coastal Garden Buildings

While Lewis Cook was at fault for losing the ball ,before Benfica's first goal, Bournemouth managed a flurry of attacks and Danjuma looked a player who will be a big weapon for Bournemouth, if he can keep this kind of performance going. The central partnership of Steve Cook and Lloyd Kelly seems set, and Solanke and Surridge will look to build a strong partnership up front. Of the U21s drafted in, it was good to see Zemura, Anthony and Ofoborh get some minutes, but hopefully JT will be able to strength with a couple of signings before the season kicks off.

Tottenham move into pole position to buy Bournemouth striker

Callum Wilson has made no secret of his wage demands, if anyone is going to bid for him this summer. He may have frozen a few clubs out by asking for £75,000 a week, but Tottenham are willing to meet those demands, according to the Daily Express.
Is Callum's new home going to be at Tottenham? A move to a London club is ideal for Wilson who may not have to completely up root his young family to play at Spurs. Going to a top six club and playing his football under an established manager like José Mourhino would be a big step up for the former Coventry striker. There maybe difficulty for him in getting opportunities to play next to Harry Kane, but if Spurs dd look to play that way, it could really help Wilson's England claims, if he does well in the same side as Kane.

Advertisement Eddie Had a Dream eBook version -£7.99!What we don't know is how much Spurs are willing to pay Bournemouth to sign Callum. It could be £25m or above, but the deal could be lowered if Spurs say they are willing to pay his wages and Callum is keen to go there. It certainly doesn't look like Callum will be with Bournemouth much longer, and for our club it is best if the done is concluded quickly, so that Bournemouth have the funds to go and get a replacement.

Advertisement Coastal Garden Buildings

It is rather concerning that we haven't seem Bournemouth exercise any buying in the market yet and with 12 September not far away, I expect I am not alone in hoping for some action in the other direction. Bournemouth's bank balance is not going to win games if some of the money is not reinvested in players.

Advertisement Coastal Garden Buildings
I would think that Callum's agent has been pressing his move as we are also getting near to the start of the new season, and for any player it is unsettling if you don't know where you will be playing next season.

The Disrupted Season (2019-20) - out next month

If you find it hard to believe the last season of football for AFC Bournemouth you will soon be able to read over it in some finer detail to see how things unfolded. The Disrupted Season (2019-20) captures events as they were happening, as I followed the Cherries through the optimistic first few months and then tried to puzzle out where things were going wrong, as the results started to slide away from the Cherries. Little did we know that COVID-19 would stop the Premier League and that Bournemouth would have a massive fight for survival with a dramatic last nine games.

The ebook is price at £9.99 and
has direct web links to Cherry Chimes. My second AFC Bournemouth book will be released as an ebook for £9.99 on 12 September on Amazon and it will be in paperback format later in the month. I'll soon be providing links to where you can get hold of the book and will be sharing some of the text to give you more of an idea of what is inside.

Like The Eddie Had A Dream book, I'll be donating 15 per cent of the earnings to the Julia's House Children's Charity for which Eddie Howe is the patron.

When I started writing the book I didn't expect it to be Eddie Howe's last season at AFC Bournemouth. I'd hoped it would be a great season with Bournemouth pushing towards a European place or at least on the verge of the top 10. Fearing the worst was always in the background of the games as they were being played out, and it taught me that as fans we do everything we can to instinctively try and hold on to anything that might turn results around.

There were still plenty of high moments for me during the season, and I'll remember 2019-20 for being a very strange season more than anything else with the impact of COVID-19. There were a lot of arguments over whether the season should even have been completed behind closed doors. Picking over the non-football months were some of the most challenging chapters to write, but this extended season was unique for all of us and my aim was to capture the tensions and sense of hope that things would work out okay.

Bournemouth fans soon found that every game became bigger and bigger towards the end. The pressure on Eddie Howe was felt by all Bournemouth supporters and however raw emotions were on 26 July 2020 when the season ended, I hope the book makes fans look back on the season and feel it was an important season to be recorded.

Advertisement Coastal Garden Buildings
I hope you enjoy the book. It gives fans a quick visual picture of the recent past Premier League games. I am sure we will compare last season to this new 2020/21 season and we will surely make comparisons between Jason Tindall's management and Eddie Howe's last year, no matter how hard we try not to. It will also put supporters back at Dean Court and remembering visits to some great football grounds in the country which we have enjoyed over the last five years.
