Bournemouth blows West Ham away 3-5 to win Betway Cup
Jason Tindall has won his first match as AFCB's manager and he has picked up the Betway Cup in a sparkling game at the London Stadium that saw eight goals. What was good to see about this Bournemouth performance was that everyone wanted the ball. I just wonder that with some of the big names not playing for the Cherries anymore, perhaps there is a better team spirit now? It feels like the cobb webs of last season have finally been cut away and a fresher looking Cherries are emerging, battled scared but ready to put right some of the wrongs of last season.

Bournemouth picked quite an experimental team for this Betway Cup match. Jordan Archer won his first appearance for the first team in goal having trained with the team in midweek. It was very exciting to see Danjuma also given free rein to play up next to Solanke, which gave him plenty of opportunities to stretch his legs. Stanislas too looked menacing on the right, while the left side was bolstered by Adam Smith and Diego Rico.
AFCB: Archer, Stacey, Simpson, Mepham (Anthony 59), Rico (Zemura 77), Stanislas (Kilkenny 77), Lerma (Billing 45), L Cook (Jodan 77), A Smith (Pugh 63), Danjuma (Gosling 45), Solanke (Ofoborh).
Subs: Dennis, Jordan, Zemura, Ofoborh, Billing, Gosling, Kilkenny, Pugh, Anthony.
West Ham: Martn, Johnson, Diopp, Ogbonna (Wilshere 63), Noble (Balbuena 63), Fornals (Snodgrass 82), Lanzini, Bowen (Masuaka), Antonio, (Anderson 62) Haller (Silva 82)Subs: Trott, Balbuena, Fredericks, Masuaku, Wilshere, Snodgrass, Anderson, Coventry, Silva, CullenAdvertisement

Match Description
Danjuma beats two on halfway and has Ogbonna to get past on the left. He cuts inside and firest into the far corner Bournemouth 0-1 up in just five minutes. Adam Smith breaks and Solanke makes it 0-2 from the six-yard box on 17 minutes. Bournemouth is playing with confidence and poise that was absent during the last six months of last season.
Rico was excellent at bringing the ball out of defence. Mepham and Simpson were assured at the back and it was a partnership that would perhaps only be back-up when the league got going but it looked really strong.
Johnson was subbed by Fredericks on 25 minutes. West Ham was winning the odd free kick but had not players looking to get on the end of balls into the box.
Lanzini is subbed for Josh Cullen on 32 minutes. Great ball in from Stanislas on the right and it falls just behind Danjuma after the defender missed it. That could have been 0-3, so unlucky.

A blocked shot bounced up for Bowen who pulls a goal back for West Ham on 32 minutes 1-2.
Antonio gets in behind but can't find a West Ham shirt the ball is out on the left and comes back in. Bowen has found space and heads in to make it 2-2 on 40 minutes. Bournemouth's defence was asleep there.
Danjuma has a pop from distance, but Martin has it covered. Antonio hits a shot on the turn and Archer is down to his left to save.
Lerma loses possession to Bowen, but the pass is overhit and Bournemouth has a goal kick. Danjuma has given it away.

Second half
Philip Billing is on for Lerma. Simpson's header drops for Haller, but he volleys high and over. Gosling is also on for Danjuma. Gosling plays a ball in for Slanke but it's too strong.
Gosling in for Solanke with Martin committed, but Solanke can't find a pass with the keeper out of his goal. Stanislas is playing upfront now with Solanke.
Smith puts a deep cross in but Solanke can't make anything of it. Simpson has to get across to stop a Hammers breakaway. Billing cuts it back Square, Stanislas dummies and Gosling hits the shot which is deflected for a corner. Great move from Bournemouth.
Both teams are pitting the tackles in. Billing and Solanke run through Solanke beats the keeper but can't find a shot. He shoots now and hits the post. It's back out to Billing, his shot is blocked. Gosling now comes in and blasts the ball off the top of the crossbar and into the net on 57 minutes 2-3. Bournemouth has the lead back.
Antonio is fouled by Gosling, Mepham is subbed and Solanke. Anthony is on and Ofoborh. I am not sure where all this precise finishing is coming from but Bournemouth looks sharp in front of the goal.

Anthony down the left and Adam Smith takes over rifling a shot into the bottom right corner on 62 minutes. It's 2-4 now.
Anderson on from Antonio. Ogbonna is replaced by Wilshere on 63 minutes. Noble is also replied by Balbuena and Bowen is off for Mauwaku.
Marc Pugh is on for Adam Smith. Gosling and Jayden Anton makes room fr a shot and picks out the top corner of the net 5-2. An absolute rocket!
Pugh tests the West Ham defence with a good cross. Gosling wins a free kick in a good position - Stanislas will take it. The shot is blocked for a corner. Billing back to Stanislas and Lewis Cook shoots wide
Kilkenny and Jordan come on for Stanislas and Lewis Cook on 77 minutes Rico is off too and Zemura replaces him.

Gosling has won another free kick. Fornals is subbed for Snodgrass. Haller is replaced by Silva as well on 82 minutes.
West Ham has a corner. Felipe Anderson gets a near-post header in that beats Archer to make the score 3-5. Ofoborgh on the overlap with Anthony can't find a green shirt.
Stacey concedes a free kick. Balbuena can only hit a weak shot at Archer. Anthony is offside. There are just three minutes of added time to go.
Anderson is caught offside. Bournemouth wins their first trophy since winning the Championship in 2015.

It was great to see a controlled performance from a Bournemouth side. JT has won his first match as a Bournemouth manager and picks up the Betway Cup to boot. There were plenty of positives about the way Bournemouth played so freely and their finishing was spot on for most of the 90 minutes. The pick of the goals was provably Gosling and Anthony's, but King and Wilson weren't really missed. Marc Pugh made a return to a Bournemouth team and many new players from the U21s looked like they could step up this coming season.

Bournemouth can expect a barrage of bids for strikers

I imagine it is quite a nervy time for the player. While he has the ultimate decision of agreeing his own personal terms with clubs, he could well find that Bournemouth agrees to a transfer fee and he is forced to go to talk with a club, despite wanting a move elsewhere. Callum Wilson would surely love to play Champions League or at least European football, but if Aston Villa is the first to make a formal bid, then it will be intriguing to see whether the big six clubs are interested in Callum or not.

I am not sure what Aston Villa was hoping for by making such a low bid. Perhaps they are trying to force the hands of others to see if they are keen on Callum? Anything under £25m is unlikely to attract any interest from Bournemouth, as Callum signed a new contract at the start of last season. Whether Aston Villa will make a serious bid will reveal the club's true intentions. They won't get Callum for a steal.

Callum may have to wait on the likes of Spurs to see other sales go through before they can respond with a bid for him, but Newcastle United or West Ham United might feel forced to act now. The wages that Wilson said he wanted may not have frightened of clubs, but the heavyweights have refrained from bidding early.Advertisement

The transfer money is what AFCB will need fairly soon though if they do want to reinvest in new players. JT will want to make the squad his and put his mark on it, and he'll only do that by bringing in new signings, or else AFCB will be viewed as Eddie Howe's depleted squad.

How badly does Bournemouth need to keep Daniels?

Personal sentiment should only go so far for players by the club. It is a business and the best options for the club have to be considered if it wants to be successful. I'd love Charlie Daniels to come back and be as good as ever, but he has a big challenge ahead of him. The drop-down to the Championship won't make it any easier, only a different kind of challenge. Daniels will have to be as strong as ever to contribute to such a long and arduous campaign.

If there is any doubt about Charlie's optimum levels then it may be the time that Bournemouth suggests that he too moves on. That sounds harsh, but Bournemouth has to be fully focussed on winning points in the new season and JT needs to go into the season knowing the full strength of his squad.

Fab new third kit for the Cherries

The swagger of the Premier League may have gone, but in a way, the club seems less boastful in being more closely tied with a company that is not a major Betting firm, and the Vitality sponsorship, which is still with the stadium, never really felt unique to Bournemouth when it was on the shirt.

Bournemouth need new strikers

Bournemouth need strikers that are sed to the Championship and that won't cost mage bucks. They could look to the strikers at Championship clubs like Cardiff, Swansea, Preston, Nottingham Forest or Brentford, for example, that did well last time out, or they could look at Premier League strikers that aren't getting much of a runout like Connor Wickham at Palace or Origi at Liverpool. Such players might not want to drop down a league, but Bournemouth have to find some players to give them more fire power because they don't have enough without Callum and Josh.

A 2-1 first defeat for Tindall's AFCB

The surprise pick of the team was to see Asmir Begovic as the first goalkeeper choice with Mark Travers left on the bench. Whether Tindall felt that playing a Champion's League team needed a n experienced keeper, or whether he was wanting to shield Travers in the first game under his reign is unknown, but it would be quite a statement if Begovic was keeper for Bournemouth's first game against Blackburn Rovers in a few week's time. Mark Travers did get to come on in the second half and did no harm to his campaign with a clean sheet.

While Lewis Cook was at fault for losing the ball ,before Benfica's first goal, Bournemouth managed a flurry of attacks and Danjuma looked a player who will be a big weapon for Bournemouth, if he can keep this kind of performance going. The central partnership of Steve Cook and Lloyd Kelly seems set, and Solanke and Surridge will look to build a strong partnership up front. Of the U21s drafted in, it was good to see Zemura, Anthony and Ofoborh get some minutes, but hopefully JT will be able to strength with a couple of signings before the season kicks off.

Tottenham move into pole position to buy Bournemouth striker

It is rather concerning that we haven't seem Bournemouth exercise any buying in the market yet and with 12 September not far away, I expect I am not alone in hoping for some action in the other direction. Bournemouth's bank balance is not going to win games if some of the money is not reinvested in players.

I would think that Callum's agent has been pressing his move as we are also getting near to the start of the new season, and for any player it is unsettling if you don't know where you will be playing next season.

The Disrupted Season (2019-20) - out next month

has direct web links to Cherry Chimes. My second AFC Bournemouth book will be released as an ebook for £9.99 on 12 September on Amazon and it will be in paperback format later in the month. I'll soon be providing links to where you can get hold of the book and will be sharing some of the text to give you more of an idea of what is inside.
Like The Eddie Had A Dream book, I'll be donating 15 per cent of the earnings to the Julia's House Children's Charity for which Eddie Howe is the patron.
When I started writing the book I didn't expect it to be Eddie Howe's last season at AFC Bournemouth. I'd hoped it would be a great season with Bournemouth pushing towards a European place or at least on the verge of the top 10. Fearing the worst was always in the background of the games as they were being played out, and it taught me that as fans we do everything we can to instinctively try and hold on to anything that might turn results around.
There were still plenty of high moments for me during the season, and I'll remember 2019-20 for being a very strange season more than anything else with the impact of COVID-19. There were a lot of arguments over whether the season should even have been completed behind closed doors. Picking over the non-football months were some of the most challenging chapters to write, but this extended season was unique for all of us and my aim was to capture the tensions and sense of hope that things would work out okay.
Bournemouth fans soon found that every game became bigger and bigger towards the end. The pressure on Eddie Howe was felt by all Bournemouth supporters and however raw emotions were on 26 July 2020 when the season ended, I hope the book makes fans look back on the season and feel it was an important season to be recorded.

I hope you enjoy the book. It gives fans a quick visual picture of the recent past Premier League games. I am sure we will compare last season to this new 2020/21 season and we will surely make comparisons between Jason Tindall's management and Eddie Howe's last year, no matter how hard we try not to. It will also put supporters back at Dean Court and remembering visits to some great football grounds in the country which we have enjoyed over the last five years.

The main thing is we should be proud of our history and what the club has achieved. A fifth year in the Premier League was just another remarkable rollercoaster season for AFCB fans. We shouldn't forget those days.
You can read more about the new book release here on the blog. Look out for more links to the new book in the next few weeks on Cherry Chimes.
