Bournemouth regain their scoring touch at Birmingham 1-3
Bournemouth like playing at St Andrews. They soon found themselves going ahead when some slick inter-passing saw Lerma weave his way across the Birmingham defence and Stanislas thread through a ball for Bournemouth's sharp shooting Arnaut Danjuma to score on nine minutes. Bournemouth lost Lewis Cook to injury halfway through the half. We have to wait to near the end of the first half for Bournemouth to extend the lead, when David Brooks saw his shot deflect in off Marc Roberts. Bournemouth extended the lead with David Brooks following up Solanke's shot that hit the post to make it 0-3, before Scott Hogan headed a goal back for Birmingham City. Bournemouth kept their heads despite a strong late flourish by Birmingham.

Jason Tindall made four changes from mid-week. In came Lloyd Kelly, Lewis Cook, Junior Stanislas and Dominic Solanke. Out went Steve Cook, Dan Gosling, Josh King and Adam Smith. There was still no place for Cameron Carter-Vickers in the squad.

Summary
Only Bournemouth's second win in seven games. Birmingham came on well at the end but Bournemouth were too good for them early on and fully-deserved the win. David Brooks will be pleased with his two goals, but it is the in-form Danjuma who leads the goal chart for the Cherries. Solane came very close to scoring when Brooks finished off his shot that came back off the post, and at the back it was a good performance without Steve Cook although the clean sheet wasn't quite possible.

Can St Andrews remain a happy hunting ground for AFCB?
Bournemouth go to Birmingham knowing that they have been not scoring freely of late and after their first defeat they'll want to refind their form. The team that Jason Tindall put out last time was one of the strongest he could have put out, but he'll need to find a replacement for Steve Cook if Bournemouth don't challenge his one-match ban. Bournemouth will need to pick players that are going to fight harder for the win than in recent matches as Birmingham City are coming off the back of a home defeat and also need to reestablish St Andrews as more of a fortress.

Birmingham will seek to redress their problems in being ought fought in their last game against Wycombe Wanderers. Aitor Karanka spoke of not being able to be complacent against Wycombe and dropping their standards but that is exactly what they did after a good 1-2 away win against Preston North End. Birmingham have been indifferent at home with two wins a draw and two defeats in their last five games at home.Advertisement

Their top scorers are striker Jerémie Bela and midfielder Gary Gardner on two goals each. Striker Lukas Jutkiewicz has also got a goal to get of the mark, but while there are a spread of other players on one goal, Birmingham have only scored four goals in their last five games. Their biggest win is a 2-1 home win over Huddersfield Town, so they haven't exactly been rolling teams over but they have been competitive and have no heavy defeats.

Adam Clayton and George Friend missed Birmingham's last game and they are the vocal players so they might be back against Bournemouth. Scott Hogan is the man that Karanka needs to start featuring on the goal sheet, as he was a big signing this summer from Aston Villa. Fans have been impressed with Mikel San Jose in midfield and Neil Etheridge in goal who was signed from Cardiff City. Birmingham City has been a rebuild project, but they are not fully settled yet and that is what Bournemouth have to take advantage of.

Was Steve Cook unlucky to be sent off at Sheffield Wednesday?
I keep watching back the challenge that Steve Cook made on Josh Windass of Sheffield Wednesday to see whether it should really have been a penalty or not. The decision could easily have gone either way, but referees are primed to give attackers the advantage when they have a clear sight of goal and I can see why the penalty was given, even if I think it was unlucky for Steve Cook to be sent off.

The way that Cook used his shoulder to try and put pressure on the attacker was not clumsy it was calculated to nudge Windass sufficiently enough that he would gain control of the ball. A shoulder charge anywhere else on the pitch I would argue would be unlikely to see a foul called. But when an attacker goes down when he had looked favourite to score, it is going to give the referee a decision to make and if he judges there was excessive contact and the attacker has not dived he will point to the spot. Personally, I thought the decision was harsh as Cook used his shoulder. But that is football.

Steve Cook will be annoyed with himself even if he looked disbelieving when he was sent off. Had the decision been the other way around I am sure our fans would have been baying for the penalty. I am not sure we would have been demanding that the defender be sent off though. The referee seemed a bit card happy in the number of cards he produced on the night, but I was expecting a red card for two yellow card offences, not a straight red for what was considered a professional foul. The irony of the issue is that VAR might have saved Cook in the Premier League, but there's none of that in the Championship.
So, I would say Cook was unlucky to be sent off. The attacker made the most of it but it was an annoying way to give one side the advantage in the game. The real worry for Tindall though should be how come Windass could make that run and our defenders look so flat-footed and behind the play, which gave Windass a couple of yards on the defenders enabling him to beat Begovic and potentially score? Bournemouth need to solve that problem in upcoming games rather than dwell too long on the actual foul as it was called. Steve Cook wouldn't have had to make such a challenge in the box if he had been more aware of Windass' run.

The defeat was coming
Jason Tindall was rightly annoyed by the performance of his team against Sheffield Wednesday but he used very strong words that didn't hide his annoyance. By saying that "One team was fighting for their lives here tonight, and I think there was another team that turned up here tonight that tough their ability would be enough to win the game and I think that is the lesson we have got to learn from today," Tindall was making no doubt that the players need to step up their game.

Bournemouth have been starting slowly in far too many games and it happened again against Sheffield Wednesday. The team is being too casual and not showing the hunger that has driven the team before. Bournemouth need that terrier hunger that we used to see from players like Harry Arter, and while the players at the club are arguably of a higher standard now, they haven't been showing the full package which needs a desire and work ethic to win games.

Jason Tindall was consistent in making late changes to the team in the second half but there wasn't enough intensity about Bournemouth's play to get them a goal. While Sheffield Wednesday found it easy to play the ball in behind Bournemouth's defenders there was little attempt to remedy the problem and that is ultimately what led to the goal. Winning second balls should be some of the basics of the game, but Bournemouth's players are far too relaxed about it.

The defeat was coming and it has been on the cards for the last three or four games. But the players couldn't react this time. That is what is ranking fans I think. We could all see it despite the unbeaten run. Bournemouth have been found out. They are not fully at it. Playing with calmness is more a case of overconfidence.
Jason Tindall can say it is not his strongest side, but the fans know it was just about the strongest side he could put out. There are no major injuries. The players are just short of being mac sharp for whatever reason. The question is will Tindall's words have any impact on the players and will we see a better performance at Birmingham? Now Tindall has the option of starting Rodrigo Riquelme and even Cameron Carter-Vickers. The defeat could be a blessing in disguise - Bournemouth don't need passengers.

AFCB have to be wary of Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday may be bottom of the league but they have amounted to six points from their nine games and would be 21st and out of the relegation zone if it weren't for their points deduction. Considering that Bournemouth couldn't beat Derby at home who are also in the relegation zone, there is no room for complacency

The Owls have not found goalscoring that simple with six goals so far. Josh Windas is the top scorer on two, but the other goals have been shared between, Jordan Rhodes, Elias Kachunga, Callum Paterson and Barry Bannan. They have won just two games beating Cardiff and Birmingham away, but are yet to win at home. Goals against have also reached double figures on 10.

Sheffield Wednesday are likely to have defender Tom Lees back from suspension for the match with Bournemouth, but Joost van Aaken will still be serving his suspension from the Luton game when he was sent off. Joe Wildsmith started in goal last match for the first time this season but he couldn't stop the bad run Wednesday are on which has now been extended to four defeats in a row.

Gary Monk expressed last game that they haven't found their cutting-edge in front of goals and hadn't had the rub of the green. They are looking for that one win to build confidence, but Bournemouth also need to start finding a better goalscoring record themselves away from home with just two goals in their last two away games following that excellent 1-3 away performance at Coventry.

Possible AFCB line-up

Tindall is having to turn games around to keep unbeaten run going
Jason Tindall had to give another inspiring half-time talk to see Bournemouth start to fire against Derby County at the weekend. The team remains unbeaten, but it's certainly not frightening the rest of the division by only playing to their potential for 45 minutes in games. The opening half of matches is becoming a problem and it is the substitutes that have been bailing AFCB out in the last couple of games.

We still haven't seen much of Rodrigo Riquelme but he certainly made a name for himself with his calmly taken finish late-on against Derb County. Up to that point, Bournemouth were struggling to get many shots on targets, but Tindall had raided the sub's bench to put on more firepower. It did the trick, but Jason has to try and work out why the team didn't perform in the first half.

For me, the missing figure was Jefferson Lerma. Without Lerma bossing the midfield and keeping AFCB pushing forward, the team looks fragile and Derby were certainly able to dominate early on. Tindall has been putting others in before Philip Billing, but in this recent match he chose to rest Gosling and with Lerma also out injured, there wasn't enough bite in midfield. Billing gave the free kick away for the Derby goal and Lewis Cook was also guilty of losing the ball cheaply at times.

Bournemouth do at least have a lot of strength in defence. Steve Cook single-handedly took it upon himself to keep the Cherries in the game at times. He certainly saved two points with his goalmouth clearance near the end, and he seems to pop up just about everywhere he Bournemouth have been looking stretched. Steve Cook has probably been Bournemouth's best player in October along with Asmir Begovic, and that says much about how the team has been scrambling for points.

While the team is still unbeaten, it is clear that when a couple of their best players are not in the starting line-up, Bournemouth can struggle to get going. It's great to see Bournemouth have the resolve to come back in games but Tindall has to get them starting games better if he wants three points more often.

Riquelme volley salvages a 1-1 draw for AFCB against Derby
Another slow start from Bournemouth led to the visitors going ahead after Billing had given a free kick away on the edge of the box. Graeme Shinnie stabbed the ball into the goal after a scramble in the box and Bournemouth found it hard to get going until the end of the first half when Solanke looked like he would score, but Marschall tipped the ball over the bar. Bournemouth chucked the subs on in the second half but it was the last of them, Rodrigo Riquelme that volleyed an equaliser on 81 minutes to save Bournemouth's unbeaten record. The real hero though was Steve Cook who saved a shot on the line with his face. That kind of commitment is just so brave and he deserves man of the match for that alone.

Jason Tindall kept the rotation going by bringing back Diego Rico, Arnaut Danjuma and Philip Billing back to the starting line-up. Out went Josh King, Lloyd Kelly and Dan Gosling while David Brooks returned to the subs bench.

Summary
Bournemouth have to find a way to start games better than this. Derby were much the better side in the first half with Shinnie dominating midfield. Without Lerma Bournemouth look short of steel in the middle. Bournemouth had to bring on Brooks, King and Riquelme to fight their way back into the age and game and it was another late Bournemouth game that salvaged a point.

Back-to-back wins are what AFCB require
We have seen Bournemouth go on an unbeaten run of eight-games but they are some way behind Reading who are top the league. The Cherries really need to see back-to-back wins to start putting some pressure on the leaders, and yet playing Derby at home won't be a simple game because Derby are desperate for points for other reasons.

Derby County may not have started well, but Martyn Waghorn has started to get his goals going with two so far and one in the last match against Cardiff City that was so nearly the winner. Derby themselves are not losing games now but have been drawing their fixtures, and so they know they only need a bit of luck to start picking up more points. While Wayne Rooney is their talisman who has been self-isolating, h for this match is likely to be available to Philip Cocu and we know he can be a match-winner. Advertisement

Bournemouth have to keep their consistency levels high and by bringing in David Brooks that might help freshen up the team. With Danjuma already hitting form, Bournemouth look to be in great strength on both flanks. The Cherries are looking more settled at the back as well having kept another clean sheet against Bristol City and Asmir Begovic is in terrific form. The unsung hero for me so far this season though is Jack Stacey. He has been fantastic going forward and has given the team much more creativity when they break and with Steve Cook doing well at blocking and getting to tackles first, the signs are starting to look better again for Bournemouth.

Now it is a case of kicking on. The players stepped up against Bristol City but could easily have come out worse in that game. Getting a whole 90-minute performance is now what Jason Tindall will want. We saw it against Coventry but that was before the international break and it is those standards that Bournemouth have to start hitting regularly.

It is probably time that Dominic Solanke showed what a player he can be and I'm expecting him to start showing the goal form he has been desperate to provide. He is getting nearer and this game is another chance for him to prove a few doubters wrong.
