Bridget the bartender at Brooks & Browns on the flip side of the front entrance to the Holiday Hotel on Pattee Street in Missoula, Montana, told me an old Catholic saying once that went something like this, “You can’t let the sun set on being pissed.” —A Choir of Honest Killers

May everything come full circle for you in 2020, and out of the holding pattern. Love, Buddy

Last show of the year tonight with @kaylen_alan. If you’ve read A Choir of Honest Killers, or saw us together during Riled Up and Wasted On Light, then you know how much it means to come full circle in Missoula with Kaylen Alan Krebsbach. If you’re within driving distance, you won’t be disappointed. If you can tell me about the reference in this photo, I’ll send you a free signed copy of the book. If you can name the venue where this photo was taken, I’ll send you a care package. If ever there was care, it lives in this photo.

Picked up three ride-or-dies in Oakland for tour home stretch down the coast. They didn’t know about the surprises planted; the kids at the lemonade stand in Santa Cruz who had our groceries ready when I “missed my turn” into Whole Foods; their dad, our old friend, Joe; the hitchhikers we picked up in Monterey who fooled the van in with disguises and accents for twenty-three minutes before the reveal… more 100% crew. They never saw it coming. That was just after Whitesnake surprised me in the parking lot fresh back from the bathroom, before the picnic in Big Sur. Down the 1 to L.A. “It’s true what they said we did. We worked for it. We drove all night.”

Once I was 19, working at a burrito shop and treading water trying to figure out what the heck I wanted to do with this life. Then this guy came along, one of my heroes, took me swing dancing and gave me my first touring job. I didn’t talk for 10 days on purpose. (The fact that I was able to do that still shocks me). I got to see the guts of this country. 4, almost 5 years ago, we parted ways in Georgia and I haven’t seen him since. On the 30th, we’re gonna get wasted on light again. So I hope you’re ready Missoula. It’s gonna be a good one.

MONTANA!! Me and @kaylen_alan, my tour manager from Riled Up and Wasted On Light, decided to round out the year in Missoula with her band, @wilmalaverneminer. I whizzed my pants … I’m also excited. My wingman’s all growed up and killing it out there. Don’t sleep on this. Last show of the year.

@jamiedewolf and I made a short film called “Farmly.” It just got released by @buttonpoetry and @writebloodypublishing on YouTube. It won at the USA Film Festival, and Best in Texas at Houston’s @literallyshortf Film Fest. The last shot is my pride and joy.
My family has been tremendously generous and hands-off in letting me unpack my life experience publicly, even when it includes them in unpleasant lights. They’ve allowed me to express and use my voice without being ashamed of how aggressively I’ve done so. Everyone mentioned in the poem “Farmly” deserves praise for not asking that I adjust my experience to make us look better than how it actually played out from my perspective. They’ve allowed me to stare shame in the face, without interrupting. When I stare shame in the face it scurries apart.
Every person in “Farmly” is in my family. “Farmly” is not appropriate for children.
