SUBMISSION: The perfumer Christopher Brosius, ironically, hates perfume. But instead of just bemoaning the state of sellable scents, he took action, and concocted some redolence of his own. It comes in a variety of whimsical, subtle fragrances like "Winter 1972" and "I am a Dandelion." Not sure you want a whiff of "In the Library?" You do.

As an additional note, the perfumer mentioned as an antiperfumer above, is interviewed in the BBC documentary Perfume. You can read about Episode 1, Something Old, Something New, about the Guerlaine brand; episode 2 has Brosius in Bottling the Memory; while episode 3 is particularly interesting, featuring the revival of Victorian Scents in keeping with perfume fashions in the Middle East, in The Smell of the Future:

stumbling through
nights
of hope
waiting on the stars
I reached
for the breeze where
minstrels tease
and whisper nothings
sweet
while I made love
to impulsive winds
with prickled skin
the same
fickle pigeons
scattered
when a branch
cracked the glass
around my gin
and I slipped
on a dream
the sky belched
breathed its cold
through the holes
of your shirt
and I fell.

Like a comet pulled from orbit,
As it passes a sun.
Like a stream that meets a boulder,
Halfway through the wood.
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you,
I have been changed for good.
It well may be,
That we will never meet again,
In this lifetime.
So let me say before we part,
So much of me,
Is made of what I learned from you.
You'll be with me,
Like a handprint on my heart.
And now whatever way our stories end,
I know you have re-written mine,
By being my friend…
Like a ship blown from its mooring,
By a wind off the sea.
Like a seed dropped by a skybird,
In a distant wood.
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you,
Because I knew you,
I have been changed for good.

Illustrated ship log for FDR's Larooco
Franklin Delano Roosevelt + Jaw Fish + Houseboat = Florida, 1924
In 1924, FDR and friend, John Lawrence, purchased a second-hand houseboat that the two named the Larooco. At that time FDR was still coming to terms with his polio diagnosis and hoped that the fun and relaxation of seasonal houseboat life in the warm waters of Florida would benefit his health and recovery. Trusted friend and adviser, Louis Howe, presented FDR with a light-hearted gift of an illustrated ship log to commemorate the Larooco's first voyage. The cover of the log is pictured above.
Roosevelt made three trips in all aboard the vessel, his last in 1926. The Larooco washed inland during a hurricane and was later sold as scrap in 1927. As FDR wrote to his mother:
So ended a good craft with a personality.
