Happy International Sloth Day!

Friday, October 20 is International Sloth Day, created by Foundation AIUNAU to bring awareness to the rehabilitation and conservation of these slow-moving creatures.
Interesting fact: Until 10,000 years ago, South America had a big population of giant sloths the size of elephants. The ones we know today are so much cuter!

Go here to learn more fun facts about these memorable mammals. Try to work them into your conversations with friends and family today!

Trunk bump

The Oregon Zoo used to exercise Chendra, its baby Asian elephant, by walking her around the neighborhood in the morning. Here’s Chendra at the zoo’s Stellar Cove in 2007, saying hi to a sea lion named Gus.
In the wild, Asian and Indian elephants are endangered by poaching, hunting, and destruction of habitat. Sea lions face hunting, pollution, and entanglement in fishing equipment. The Oregon Zoo recommends helping at-risk species by taking Small Actions. For instance, you can plant wildlife-friendly flowers in your yard to aid bumblebees. Check out more of the zoo’s helpful tips here!

Dinos ahoy!

Why would a T. Rex swim when it can travel in style? These dinosaur replicas are being barged to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City. They seem to be enjoying the ride!

Happy first day of fall!

Today the sun crosses the plane of the earth’s equator, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth. It’s the autumn equinox, the end of summer and the start of fall. From here on out, nights will be longer and days will be shorter. And hibernation will start to sound pretty good!

Beat the heat

Things get hot in the summertime. There’s too much sun and too little shade. But simply watching this may help you cool off!
