Heroes vs best friends.

Today is the release for Nic Starr’s latest novel Andrew’s Promise. It’s the second in the Heroes series and follows Andrew and Tanner. Andrew is Charlie’s brother who we first met in Charlie’s Hero.

Check them out below:

CharlieSchoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends, and settle down. It looks like his dreams have come true when paramedic Josh Campbell attends an accident at the school. It’s love at first sight, and a romance begins.

But Josh’s reluctance to come out to the brother who raised him, puts pressure on their fledgling relationship. While Charlie understands Josh’s concerns, he can’t help growing impatient. After all, Charlie came out years ago.

It’s not until Charlie confronts his own parents and realizes he hasn’t come to terms with their rejection that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie’s hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that to be part of a family, he doesn’t need his parents.

AndrewYoung mechanic Andrew Campbell’s life couldn’t be better. He is about to restore a Ford Mustang with his dad before heading off on the ultimate cross-country road trip with his best friend, Tanner McKenzie.

But tragedy strikes, and Andrew’s life is shattered. Worried his family will be torn apart if he doesn’t step in, Andrew makes a tough choice between following his heart and doing what he needs to do to protect his little brother.

When Andrew pushes Tanner away, Tanner heads off on the planned trip alone. Once Tanner leaves town, his life takes a different path and it’s ten years before he returns. Now a firefighter, he’s never forgotten his first love, and no one has ever taken Andrew’s place in his heart. He’s determined to see if Andrew feels the same way. He just hopes Andrew’s excited to see him, hopes that he’s available—and finally out—after all this time.

They might not have been ready to deal with emerging feelings years ago, but now might be the time for their second chance at love.

We know heroes can come in many forms. They can be men and women who risk their lives to save someone like a firefighter or police officer. They can be fighting in the military to ensure we enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted in our everyday living. They can be a stranger holding someone’s hand who has wrecked their car as they wait for the paramedics (another type of hero) to arrive to help them. They are there at times of need. They are selfless. They are considerate.

So what’s this got to do with Nic Starr’s new release? Not much really. I just wanted to say thank you to my best friend who has helped me over the past week that I’ve been absent from social media, despite having my own release to promote. Life can get the best of us sometimes and during those times we can feel the need to curl up in a corner and hide for a while. That was me the last few days. Nic was there and she listened patiently, always encouraging, even when I was being a whiny bitch for no discernible reason. She gets me. She even told me to pull my head out when that was what I needed to hear. So I’m sending a big heartfelt thank you to my bestie. *Big squishy hugs*

Now to Andrew’s promise. I’m not going to do a big review here, but I will say that this book made me fangirl all over Nic. Despite thinking Andrew was a bit of a douche in Charlie’s Hero, I loved him. I got him. I loved Tanner and when these two finally sorted their shit out? Magic. Sexy magic.  And who doesn’t love that?

Oh and Nic? If you see this I’ll try to be subtle.

*cough* Antonio *cough*

There. Now it’s out in the open you have to write it.

Stuff and Things. And some needed radio silence…

It’s been a bit of a mixed bag for me this week. First I had the release of Black & Bluhe and that went well. Initial reviews have been promising and I’m yet to see anything too negative. It’s all good. I’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the blogs that participated in the tour that was coordinated by Will at Pride Promotions.

Participating blogs were (in no particular order):

Prism Book Alliance, Hearts on Fire, Bayou Book Junkie, Jessie G. Books, Carly’s Book Reviews, The Hat Party, Love Bytes, Scattered Thoughts & Rogue Words, My Fiction Nook, The Novel Approach, Just Love Romance Molly Lolly, and Parker Williams.

There’s an exclusive excerpt at each blog stop so be sure to check it out.

On the other side of things, it’s been a tougher week than it should’ve been. There’s been a major upheaval on the homefront which is going to take some time to get through the transition, for both me and the kids. And it’s hitting hard than anticipated.

Things I can usually brush off and say “She’ll be right, don’t worry about us” is becoming harder to do. Little things that don’t usually bother me, do. Things I have no reason to be annoyed with, I am. It’s not rational. I know this.

On the writing side of things, well, I’ve been handed a couple of blows this week as well which is taking up major brain space that I don’t have to spare right now.

It’s all conglomerated into a major shitty week and seeing a lot of negative posts on social media lately hasn’t helped.  Authors behaving badly, readers being ostracised etc has compacted my mood. So I’m going radio silent for a little while and focussing on my family instead. I’ll still answer my emails but if you tag me a in post or leave a comment, please don’t feel like I’m ignoring you. I’m ignoring everybody.

Anyway, I’ll leave you with a hot man pic. Because at the end of a crappy day, they’ll always put a smile on a face, especially these two.  :)

Black & Bluhe is coming…

I’m so happy to announce that Black & Bluhe is finally finished editing and ready to hit a Kindle near you. Release date is July 31 but I thought I’d tease a little first.

Gray 3

Meet Gray Black. He’s a bit of a broody ass and will protect his identical twin brother (yes, he has a twin *squee*) until his dying breath.

Kris 2

Meet Kris Larson. Your local, easy-going, SFFD firefighter. He wants to help Gray and his brother, but what happens when Gray won’t let Kris get too close?

Black and Bluhe 600

Here’s the blurb to entice you a little more:

Grayson Black has never forgiven himself for not saving his identical twin brother, Jet, from a savage beating at their father’s hands ten years ago. Jet’s near-death never would have happened if Gray hadn’t been so focused on his boyfriend at the time. He has sworn to take care of his brother ever since. Gray can’t afford a distraction from his self-imposed mission, the type of distraction presented by the gorgeous blond showing up at their gigs.

Kris Larson is a firefighter with the San Francisco Fire Department. Since splitting from his girlfriend, his favorite way to spend nights off is watching the Black Brothers play in the bars of the Bay Area, especially the guitarist. But it’s not until the brothers are left homeless after a fire at their apartment building that Kris has the opportunity to know the real person behind the brooding façade.

Gray fights his attraction to Kris, but with a meddlesome twin who just wants him to be happy, it’s a losing battle. Before Gray and Kris can have a lasting relationship, though, Gray must learn to forgive himself, let go of the past, and lay more than one demon to rest.

The Perfect Size for You by Lily G. Blunt

I don’t review books anymore. TBH, it’s just too damn time consuming. I may post a plug on FB if I really enjoyed a story, but my reviewing days are done. I’ve made an exception for this hot little number, though.

As some of you may know, Lily is a fellow author with Wayward Ink Press. She’s helped me with some promotion for Out of the Blue and I was biding my time until I could return the favour. Well, when I saw this cover pop up on my FB feed my tongue fell out of my head and I jumped at the chance to help her out with a bit of promo.  She offered me a copy of the story, which I was more than happy to accept. See below for my review.

The Perfect Size For You

by

Lily G. Blunt

10327195_508510592586834_625487093_n

After updating his Rent Boy blog profile, well-endowed porn star Ty, receives a text requesting an appointment with a sexually inexperienced client. Andy asks Ty to provide him with the necessary knowhow, so if he ever goes on a date with the guy he’s attracted to he’s fully prepared.

Little does Ty know this hook-up will lead to a friendship that will subsequently change his life. Can Ty remain friends with Andy or will he always want more? And how will Ty react when Andy finally goes on a date with another man?

This story is also available in the Take It Like A Man Anthology.

Excerpt:

Not even counting the money, I shoved it in my back pocket. “So, what do you have in mind for this afternoon?”

He flushed again and shrugged. “I’d like to talk for a while and kiss and cuddle, if that’s okay?”

Geez! Easy money.

I didn’t wish to hurt his feelings. “Umm… couldn’t you find a guy from school to do that with?” That would certainly be cheaper for him. Not that I was complaining.

He shook his head, looking embarrassed, and leaned against the kitchen counter. He was so fucking cute.

“Are you even out yet?” I took a step closer to him.

He shook his head again, glancing at my lips. “No, no one knows I’m gay.”

I ran a finger up his arm, and placed my hand gently on his shoulder. “So, have you done anything with a guy before?”

His head tilted down as if ashamed, his wide brown eyes peering up at me. “No, that’s why I called you. So if I ever get to date this guy I really like, I’ll know what to do.” His voice was just above a whisper.

We were close now, our bodies practically touching. He smelled nice, of soap and shampoo. His breath was hot and coming out in quick pants.

“Relax for me, Andy.”

I slid my hand behind his neck, and teased the soft hair at his nape. Our lips met softly for a first sweet kiss. His eyes fluttered closed, and I swept my mouth over his, my lips parting slightly. His mouth opened for me, his tongue peeked out and lapped teasingly against mine. He tasted minty and fresh. It didn’t take long before it became a passionate lip lock, with Andy moaning into my mouth.

I nibbled on his lower lip. “Mmm… you’re a quick learner.”

Reviews of The Perfect Size for You:

“This book had me driving with one hand on the wheel. I want more of this erotic sexually charged, and FUN book.”

“Finally got a chance to read this. Quite adorable. I love a geeky little twink with his shyness. This was an adorable story.”

“Ty is a porn star who is branching out to become a rent boy because he is nearing the end of his career. He advertises on a website where he ends up meeting Andy, a sweet eighteen year old virgin who wants to gain some experience so that if he can ever manage to hook the guy he likes, he’ll know what to do.

Ty really enjoys his time with Andy and the more time they spend together, the more he doesn’t want Andy to end up with Evan. He breaks the rule about caring about his tricks and ends up biting off more than he can chew emotionally.

I really enjoyed this short story. I’m a sucker for rent boys/porn industry stories and this hit the spot wonderfully! I really loved Andy and Ty together.

The sexy times were sweet and then hot! I’m really anxious to get to this author’s other porn industry book!

A definite must read!!”

“I just love this writer, she is a dear friend. This storyline was well written and I loved each page. I wish it had gone on longer too damn short!!”

So what did I think?

This wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought Andy would fall for Ty. After all, you always remember the person who took your virginity, so to read about a porn star come rent boy falling for the shy twink was nice and refreshing. Lily’s writing flowed well for me. She combined a nice mix of sweet and hot but neither guy came across as needy or desperate. I would have like a bit more character depth but it’s a good short story you can read while having a cuppa. I’ll definitely be reading more from Lily.

About the Author:

Lily G. Blunt writes contemporary gay romance and erotica. She loves to explore the relationship between two men and the intensity of their physical and emotional attraction. Angst often features in her stories as she feels this demonstrates the depth of the men’s feelings for each other. Lily is forever writing imaginary scenes and plots in her head, but only a few ever make it to the page—there never seems to be enough hours in the day despite having left the teaching profession to concentrate on her writing!

Lily discovered the wonderful world of m/m romance novels four years ago via fan fiction and went on to write stories in her spare time. With the encouragement of her friends and readers she decided to publish some of her work.

Lily has several self-published stories available on Amazon. She is also published with Torquere Press and Wayward Ink Publishing.

Easily distracted from her writing, Lily makes videos using clips from gay-themed movies and posts gorgeous pictures of men kissing or making out on her tumblr and Facebook pages. Lily is also an avid supporter of GLBTQ rights and advocates equality for all.

Lily lives in central England with her rather bemused husband, two twenty-something children, and a ‘mad as a bag of frogs’ Shetland Sheepdog.

My review of Charlie’s Hero by Nic Starr (and the guest post that made me cry)

Many of you will know that Nic is one of my closest friends and I wanted to tell you about her first novel. Most of you will recognize her name and I can here at least one of you say, “but she’s written other stuff.” Yes, she has, but they’ve all been novellas.

Charlie’s Hero is a full length novel, so that means paperback! Yay! Check it out below.

Publisher:  Dreamspinner Press
Release Date: 17th June 2015
Cover Artist: Bree Archer

CharliesHero_postcard_front_DSP

The Blurb…

Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends, and settle down.

But Josh is Charlie’s hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that he doesn’t need his parents to be part of a family.

Sounds good right?  It is. I mean, who can resist a school teacher and a paramedic? I loved Josh. He’s a dedicated paramedic, loves his job and his brother, Andrew. Josh is sort of closeted, but only when it comes to Drew. Charlie still loves his family even though they stopped loving him when he opened the closet door. I feel for Charlie, he’s such a sweet character. He moved back to his hometown because he wants roots and a stable life. This is such a sweet story that comes with a little angst, some hot, smexy scenes and a glorious HEA.

The best part about this story though, isn’t the story. It’s the journey the author has been on. I’ve read everything Nic has written, mostly as one of her beta’s but I’ve always read the final story as well. It’s such a joy to see Nic’s writing mature and improve with every release. I can count on Nic to give me a sweet story with little conflict. Dark and emotional is not her style. I can count on her to deliver a feel-good, pick-me-up read. Now Nic will be the first to tell you her first attempt at writing didn’t go so well. But trust me on this. If you enjoy Andrew Grey’s writing style, give this one a go. You’ll love it. Oh and if you’re one of those weird people that don’t like hot paramedics, wait till Andrew’s Promise comes out. When I read that I fangirled all over my laptop!

Now you’re probably wondering why I titled this post “the one that made me cry.” I told you earlier that Nic is my bestie. I asked her to send me an excerpt and anything else she wanted me to put on my blog so I could help promote her lovely book. That was last week and because RL got in the way I’ve only just seen what she sent me now. (She’ll kill me if I don’t include it, and maim me if I cut bits out.)

Here goes. *grabs tissues before I read it again*

A Message To A Friend

RJ asked me to visit her blog. She wanted to do a post about my latest book. She wanted to help celebrate the release of Charlie’s Hero. She asked for an excerpt or anything else I wanted to provide for a Guest Post.

I’ve just written ten guest posts for my blog tour so was temporarily out of ideas, but then thought… Why not just write from the heart?

So here is the post I’ve written specifically for RJ Jones. And yes, RJ, you must publish this as-is.

Dear RJ,

You have been on this writing journey with me since the very beginning. You are a key part of the journey, and I have no doubt I couldn’t have done this without you.

You were part of my life before my writing ever started. We chatted about m/m romance, discussed books and authors, and you joined me on my blog to share our love of the genre. You became a ‘real life’ person for me to interact with. We moved beyond Facebook, sharing photos, and personal stories. We still use Messenger to chat throughout the day, but now hardly a day goes by where we don’t share a phone call – sorry about the phone bill. J

Our friendship has evolved over the last eighteen months. You travelled across the country to stay for a weekend. I dragged my family across to Perth where we holidayed together. We met up again in Melbourne for Queermance – apologies for the snoring *wink*.

You have become a key part of my life. A true friend.

And part of that friendship has involved you holding my virtual hand as I continued writing. You knew of the doubts I had about my ability and offered nothing but encouragement and support. You picked me up and dusted me off, when some rough reviews of my first story knocked me to the ground, at the same time I was going through some tough times personally. You have listened to me bitch and moan (I know I’m usually a lovely person but editing can be tough J), and you have provided advice when needed. You make a great sounding board. You have read my stories, giving me praise to make me smile, but also giving me the not-so-pleasant opinions. You are invaluable.

I’m excited for the months ahead, to see the release of both Charlie’s Hero and its sequel, Andrew’s Promise, but also to share your publishing journey. This is the part where I do a plug for Black & Bluhe – such a joy to watch this story come to life and I know it’s going to be a huge success. Plus we have our big trip to San Diego and GRL to look forward to in October. I couldn’t think of a better person to be going on this adventure with.

I am grateful to have you in my life and am thankful for our friendship *big squishy hugs*

Nic

*sniff* SEE! That’s why I cried! (and she’s not online at the moment so I can’t tell her off!)

I love you too, Nic. Very much

More on Writer’s Block… I haz it.

images

So, because I’m not writing anything I’m researching instead.

Writer’s Block definition as per our good friend, Mr Wikipedia:

Writer’s block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown. The condition ranges in difficulty from coming up with original ideas to being unable to produce a work for years. Throughout history, writer’s block has been a documented problem.[1] Professionals who have struggled with the affliction include author F. Scott Fitzgerald,[2] Joseph Mitchell[3] and pop culture cartoonist Charles M. Schulz.[4] Research concerning this topic was done in the late 1970s and 1980s. During this time, researchers were influenced by the Process and Post-Process movements, and therefore focused specifically on the writer’s processes. The condition was first described in 1947 by psychoanalyst Edmund Bergler.[5]

Blah, blah, freaking blah…  Although it’s nice to know even famous people went through this shit.

Calvin+and+Hobbes

“Writer’s block is for people who have the luxury of time.” ~ Jodi Picoult

Some definitions I’ve come across state that Writer’s Block is the inability to come up with anything to write about. I refer to Mr Wikipedia once more:

Blank page syndrome is similar to writer’s block, but in this case it isn’t a psychological term like writer’s block is. It can happen at any point in time during a writer’s career; be it right after an author dishes out six best-selling novels, or smack dab in the middle of the page. This syndrome can be very irksome to authors and often leads to a long span of time where they can’t come up with anything new. Coping strategies include: distracting yourself from the piece for a while, reading a book, and forcing yourself to write something even if it doesn’t make any sense. To avoid blank page syndrome it’s best to have an idea when you sit down to write, and to keep from procrastinating because stress only worsens the blank page syndrome.

This is not the case for me. I have a WIP with 15k already written, another one with 13k. I also have an outline for one I haven’t started yet. And it’s not like the characters aren’t talking to me. They won’t shut the hell up! My problem is I seem to have lost the ability to write anything I consider any good. My sentences are a mess, my timeline is out. My characters are shitty and one dimensional. My scenes are FORCED. I feel it. They are stilted, and most of the time unreadable. It’s like pulling teeth. I’ve lost my confidence.

Chalkboard-Writers-Block

“There is no such thing as writer’s block for writers whose standards are low enough.” ~ William Stafford, American poet

This quote tells me I don’t have writer’s block, just high standards. Do I release something that is sub par? Uh, no. That would be stupid. I’ll just bide my time with research, planning and walking the dog. If it gets any worse I’ll clean the house.

Writers block… What is it?

To be honest I have no idea, but I think I have it. I’ve been writing and writing and am half way through a 30k novella which I plan on releasing for free. The problem is all but 2k of it is shite.  At least that’s what I think anyway. I thought maybe it was the story, maybe I had trouble getting into the character’s heads as they’re quite complex. I blamed the story, too many elements and a theme I had trouble understanding.

So I shelved it and started outlining another story which the characters were pushing to be heard. I started writing the first scene on that story, got to about 500 words and realised it wasn’t the story that was the problem. It was me!

11188207_1438560389772476_3168754556998622646_n

Oh, don’t mind him, he’s just here to look pretty.

The words aren’t flowing properly. It’s disjointed and all over the place. And it’s giving me a rather large headache as I try to struggle through the shitty words that shouldn’t have been written in the first place.

So is this writers block? Probably. Who knows? All I know is everything I’ve written in the last few weeks is a pile of crap, so I’m stepping back from writing until I can do it again with an element of confidence.

What does this mean for any upcoming releases? Nothing at all. I have written two novels and a short story which will all come out in the second half of this year. I have this year covered. However, next year is a different matter, but I don’t expect this period of non writing to last very long.

Chin up! It’s not like I haven’t anything to do. I’ve always got editing…

It’s all too hard today…

Ever had one of those days where everything is just too hard? I haven’t done any writing, editing or researching. Nothing. I haven’t responded to emails or been over to the Two Men blog to set up posts. Which is totally unlike me. I’m usually doing something writing related.

I finished reading a book and took a nap. That was the extent of my day.

My hubby’s been away with work and I say I haven’t missed him. I’ve liked having a clean house, not much washing, little cooking and the peace and quiet. But today my mood has been really suckish so maybe I do miss him. I think I miss his cuddles. Maybe all I need is a Hubby Hug. Luckily he’s home tomorrow night so I’ll get a snuggle then.

I apologise for the sad post, this isn’t like me and you probably won’t see another on like it. But I guess everyone has a shitty day sometimes. I’ll be back to my normal self tomorrow. Promise :)
