Mark O'Connell The idea for this book came from conversations with friends who are women and had been to my wedding to my husband. After seeing mine, they were encouraged to have weddings of their own. Weddings that were creative and on their own terms (ones that would not contain the historical/traditional implications of women as property). They wanted their weddings to feature their story--as individuals and as a pair--as well as the equality they share in their relationships, more than any traditions (This isn't to say they did not have traditional elements at their weddings, or that I didn't either). It occurred to me, through these conversations, that the marriage equality movement has created fresh ideas about weddings and marriage that could be useful to all couples at this time, gay straight, or what have you.
