Stop thinking about writing a book and start writing! No need to copy edit as you go along, just get as many words out there as you can and copy edit after you've got the first draft complete. Having a writing partner to hold you accountable is tremendously helpful as well, so see if you can find a kindred spirit who is on the same quest.

I am currently working on a young adult fiction piece set in 1974 about a girl who is bullied and how the situation is resolved over the course of her seventh-grade school year. Lots of pop culture references that the Baby Boomers will appreciate and the message is very relevant in this day and age. I wrote the first 50,000 words during November to earn the NANOWRIMO certificate but plan on finishing the rough draft this month.

My biggest inspiration is a deadline! I am a freelance journalist and nothing gets me in front of my keyboard faster than a looming deadline! For my book, a friend challenged me to meet with her once a month for coffee and we'd swap chapters of the books we were working on. When I got to the coffee shop inevitably my pages were still warm -- literally hot off the press because I generally wrote the chapter in the hour or two before we got together!

A friend of mine is a Civil War reenactor and his great, great uncle had a unique experience during the Civil War. Novels from this era are some of my favorites to read and since I had wanted to write my own novel for several years, this seemed like it could be the start to an amazing story.
