What a good question, I apologize for the VERY late response. Last year was not a good year. There is a house not far from ours that I have created a Dateline type premise. Every once in awhile, even through closed windows, we hear a male scream. Why? What's going on there? When I've driven by, they have multiple cars in the driveway and most of the cars are full of junk. You literally can't get in those cars. The garage door was open once and it was the same. There's a story there...

I thought I'd share with you a link to what I consider one of the most respected voices in the publishing industry. My biggest piece of advice besides looking at the link is make sure you have the correct name and title of the person you are addressing. Triple check it for errors, and then have three others read it as well. One error and your letter, no matter how well you have written, will go in the trash.

Lanna, I apologize for being so late answering this, I have been busy re releasing Entrusted and now Entangled is available as well. At the same time I had a family wedding and our son's graduation. I'm just coming up for air, and I apologize.
The best advice on cover letters I can give is to be professional. I've read too many horror stories from agents and acquisition editors where the cover letter is not addressed correctly. On bright paper to stand out. Starts off with an outrageous claim (my book will make you a billionaire...)
State who you are and what genre you are writing. Is the ms completed, and what is the word count. Are you agented? Previously published? What kind of platform do you have? Do you have a social media following? If not, what are you doing to create one? Can you give the equivalent of a back cover blurb to garner interest but not give away every detail?
If you are supposed to include sample chapters or a synopsis, state that they are enclosed and thank them for their time.
Overall, be yourself. Confident isn't a bad thing, but obnoxious is. Stay true to yourself and your work. Write a professional cover letter and your work will hopefully sell itself.

Entrusted came to be thanks to the McComb family and their invitation to visit Speculator, NY back in the early 90's. I instantly fell in love with the area. As I walked around I could see the characters come to life. It took years for me to work on it, but their faces and stories never left me.
