Jan Groft I try to keep an open heart. I listen to the Amish buggy clip-clopping past my study window, to music (I love Carsie Blanton, Louis Armstrong, and Gregorian Chant), to the silence, and to stories shared by hospice patients whom I visit . . . which I am on my way to do right now.
Jan Groft Learn to hear the voice inside, and write about the things that are most meaningful to you.
Jan Groft The solitude, the entrepreneurialism, the opportunity to connect deeply with an inner voice are a few of the qualities that call my name. Of course, at any given moment, these things can be elusive, but after twenty-five years in the advertising business, I just feel in my heart that I am in the right place.
Jan Groft Great question! And, in fact, it's one of the main threads of my new book, Artichokes & City Chicken, which grew out of a horrendous struggle with writer's block. I've learned (and am still learning) to try to scoot out of the driver's seat. The Spirit, the muse, or whatever name you attach to a higher power is more than willing to inspire, but it's up to the writer to listen. Writing, I've found, comes from a deep place of listening, and I need to honor that.
