Perseverance. Read other writers' books but never be put off by thinking 'I can't write like that'. Learn their skills in structure, approach etc, but the artistic side of it remains yours.

I don't think I can pick out just one 'best' thing. The happy things range from the rare times you feel you've written something good, whether it be a sentence, a paragraph or more, to the wonderful feeling that you don't have to rush for that commuting train any more. Caveat: you still have to get up at the same time, only it's not so far to rush to one's office if it's in your home.

Way back in my childhood I decided I wanted to write ...but other things got in the way. Then thirty years later I met Dot Lumley, who later became my agent, who spurred me on. I wrote a whole paragraph in a year, showed it to her with some diffidence - and she told me to go right ahead and finished the novel. I did.

Strolling round the corner to pick up bundles of pound notes seemed a world away from today's hi-tech bank security It caught my fancy and hey presto Jack Colby had another case - Classic Cashes In. A classic Packard joined the cast too.
