Allen Gee I turned fifty, and I had all of these life experiences, and I thought, if I'm not going to write them down, or feel comfortable about saying what I want to say, then when am I ever going to write these essays? Midlife was a real marker and a motivation for me.

Allen Gee My agent just brought a young reader book--a short novel--to editors. I'll be finished revising an adult literary novel this summer. I've drafted two essays, and parts of these will fit into a new nonfiction book that I'll be working on beginning this fall (2015).
Allen Gee Read and write a lot, and work with good teachers or befriend authors if you can. Write to finish things, even if they're just drafts.
Allen Gee You get to work alone, which I've always liked, but the best thing is finishing a piece or an entire book, and knowing that it's the best you could have done for who you are at this point in time.
Allen Gee I'm always reading new books, and I keep notebooks, so I almost never run out of having stories or essays that I want to work on.
