Probably Paolo and Francesca from Dante's Inferno. The reason is because of the irony behind their fate: Dante has placed them in Hell as adulterers, but his rendition of their story is entirely sympathetic, as if to say that their punishment is unjust, that love is sacred even if it violates the sanctity of marriage. Dante pitied many people that he met in the Inferno, but Paolo and Francesca stand out as victims of an unjust Divine Order. Oddly, they are together for all eternity--a peculiar way of mitigating their pain.

I wait until it goes away. I never write under pressure except when I feel inspired.

The best moment for me is when I read what I have written and feel a thrill of emotion--that means that I have written something that appeals to me. You can't get hung up on writing best-sellers or The Great American Novel. Just write what you enjoy reading.

Write what you know about, but don't be afraid to research another time and place. Write what you would enjoy reading. After you write something, let it sit for a few weeks, then go back and revise. The real writing happens when you revise, so do it carefully and with discipline.

I write sporadically, when I feel the impulse. Everyone says, "You have to write every day," but I don't write unless I'm in the mood because I know that what I write under pressure won't be good. Usually I am inspired by reading a good book or sometimes by a good movie.

My father started writing this book a few months before he died in 1995. In 2010 my stepmother gave me the manuscript and since the story was already well-developed, I decided to finish it. The concept of a glacial fortress appealed to me enormously.
