Oriana, I'm with you about Goldfinch! I just want to have that *feeling* about another book. 6 years later, I'm still searching. I can see you have mentioned 2 other novels, so will research these. Way back, I read - *Birdsong*...... another exceptional read. Are you familiar with it?

Oriana, yours was such a fresh, intuitive yet precise description of THE GOLDFINCH. I have no words to express how I identified with what you describe. And yes, it is not only the beautiful blending of words, the mastery in writing and these ideas and analogies that Donna Tartt simply creates and depicts in such a marvelous way. And yes, every tiny detail counts to a perfectly structured and beautiful novel. Isn't it?

Yours was the only review of Middlesteins that compared it, as I did, to Goon Squad. I loved Jami's timeline jumps, POV switches (within chapters no less!) no clear protagonist and antagonist and that wry omniscient narration. As an on-line student of writing, I find all instructors and workshop participants flag everything Jami did as wrong. Is there a course anywhere that nurtures such transgressions?

Oriana Leckert Gosh, I don't know anything about writing courses, but I would say this kind of writing is not just acceptable but has been done for a long time. Ken Kesey's incredible Sometimes a Great Notion does it, and that book is like 50+ years old.

Can I ask what you loved about the Goldfinch? I absolutely loved The Secret History (although I barely remember now) but I have had trouble getting immersed in Goldfinch. But, so many people rave about it. Thought to ask you b/c I am reading "The Empathy Exams" and am loving it and saw your review of it.

Oriana Leckert Oh gosh well you'd be hard-pressed to find two books I love more that are so totally totally different. As regards Goldfinch, I was just totally enamored of it from the very start, from the stunning language to the exquisite details to the amazing characters, so if you're not getting into it, that might not change. I don't know! A book is so different for everyone. : )

Hi Oriana! I LOVE The Goldfinch. I was about to finish it on the subway last night and thought best not to as I felt I was going to burst into tears. I still haven't read the last few pages as I just don't want it to end. Is that crazy?! I need to find something as amazing and found your review and some suggestions you've made below. Have you read Donna Tartt's first 2 novels?

I've read Secret History several times, though I never did read The Little Friend, which seems like probably an oversight! I should really pick that one up.

Hello Oriana, I enjoyed your review of the Goldfinch so much, it is exactly how I feel about the book. I wanted to know what books you would recommend that you enjoyed as much (if any) as you enjoyed the Goldfinch?

Oriana Leckert Gosh, I wish. There's really nothing like Goldfinch that I've found, although two novels I read recently that I found similarly immersive and complex are The Lost Time Accidents and You Deserve Nothing. They're both really different though! But both wonderful. Let me know if you come across anything else you'd recommend to me!
