Sandy Berman I walk away from the computer. Sometimes I go to the gym. I find it helpful to not push it...new ideas, or a sentence I was stuck on come more naturally to me if I try not to stress about it.
Sandy Berman I have always written. Most of my work, however, has been as a historian writing exhibitions on Jewish related topics. Klara with a K is my first attempt at a work of fiction. I suppose Klara's story was always in the back of my mind. She is a composite of so many of the individuals I had the opportunity to interview in my work at the museum.
Sandy Berman In my work, as an archivist and museum curator at The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta, I interviewed countless Holocaust survivors who settled in the south prior to and immediately after World War II. Their experience was unique. I was intrigued by how survivors felt about living in the Jim Crow south. In Klara with a K, the main character grapples with the complex issues associated with being Jewish, a survivor and a proponent for civil rights.
