Write for just one specific reader. It's too overwhelming to imagine multiple people reading your book, so I like to imagine that I'm only writing the story for one person. That person can change with each project.

I sit down with a notebook of graph paper (it has to to be graph paper!) and write notes to myself. Sometimes the notes are just a word or two, sometimes they're longer thoughts that I want to try and express on the page. Then I put the notebook aside and get to work.
