I recently traveled to Alaska, and was greatly inspired by the land. So that's the setting for my next novel. Some of the characters are based on actual people I either personally know or have read about. There will be mythical and romantic components as well as some political tension centered around fishing, which is big money in Alaska.

I heard a story on NPR in 2014 about these asylum seekers from Ethiopia and Bangladesh and elsewhere in the world coming into USA illegally through our border with Mexico, and I wanted to explore that more. 2014 was also the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre which many people in China today have no knowledge of. It had left quite an impression on me when it happened, and I wanted to look into the transformation China had undergone in the 25 years since.

I get inspired to write by listening the public radio, paying attention to things that happen in the world, and going outdoors, traveling, being with people from all walks of life, listening to their stories, and being motivated strongly to preserve my thoughts, feelings, and experiences in words.

My favorite times of the day are the few minutes after I wake up and the few minutes before I fall asleep where I close my eyes and just imagine different scenes that could happen in my book. I have a general outline of my book usually before I start writing but I am constantly revising it, and sometimes I'm surprised at what I actually write down because it's not something I had planned to write.
