I visited the Balkans right after the end of the Yugoslav civil war in the 1990s. I had followed the conflict in some detail before visiting there. Seeing the devastation first hand convinced me there was a story to be told. That inspired the sections of the novel set in that region, and those in turn provided a centerpiece around which to build the rest of the plot and to imagine several of the characters.

My work (researching and teaching modern military history, with a focus on terrorism and intelligence activities) provides me with a rich body of data and fascinating true stories. The truth is often stranger than fiction.

Try it, and keep trying. Don't be discouraged if your first story or the first version of it doesn't work out. Write every day, even if only for a few minutes. See if you can set aside a block of time every day just for writing.

The creative process, in both fiction and non-fiction. In fiction you get to create an imaginary world of people and events. If it works, that's very satisfying. In non-fiction it's revealing some unknown or little known story, which can be as satisfying as writing fiction.

I've never been totally blocked. I'm a history prof, so I'm writing all the time. If I find my writing isn't going well on one thing I just shift to another and come back to the previous one later.
