The Poisoned Pen is my favorite bookstore in all of Arizona. Unfortunately Barbara hasn't invited me out for a signing yet. Hopefully someday! When it happens, I'll be sure to post the event ahead of time!

Kind regards,

B.A. Trimmer Hello Michelle,
Thank you so much for your kind words. I've been meaning to put up a Laura Black book page on Facebook, but the writing always seems to come first. I love Scottsdale and all things Arizona and I'm glad that I've encouraged you to explore some of them as well. Hopefully you'll get a chance to visit Scottsdale soon! Feel free to write if you'd like more information or if you'd like to be one of my "preview readers" on the next book...
Kind Regards,
BA Trimmer

B.A. Trimmer A while ago, I created a profile of each of the characters in the books, Here is the one for Laura (What do you think? Does it match up with what you know about her?):

Laura Black is just your average working woman trying to make her way through the world. Her age isn’t given but she’s somewhere in her late-twenties or early-thirties. She’s old enough to have experienced some of life’s hard knocks but still young enough to have an idealistic viewpoint about the world and how it “should” work. In her mind, her assignments for the law firm are her chance to, as Lenny puts it, “save the world” or to at least make it a better place for the people she interacts with. She has no problem violating a rule, or even breaking a law, if she thinks it’s the right thing to do.

Laura is a Scottsdale native, growing up in the Granite Reef section of South Scottsdale and going to Navajo Elementary School. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Arizona State University, down the road in Tempe. She married her long-term boyfriend when she graduated from college and soon after, got a messy divorce. She worked for a few years as a bartender then moved into the investigator role at Lenny’s law firm.

Physically, she’s medium height and thin to the point of being skinny. Her race may be assumed to be white but her skin tone and hair color are never given – she’s pretty much whoever you want her to be. She’s slightly self-conscious about her looks and is aware that many women are prettier than she is.

When it comes to the job, Laura makes up for her overall lack of training and experience by her determination and willingness to put in long hours. She’ll do whatever it takes to come to a successful resolution for the client, and for Lenny too if she can help it. When working an assignment, Laura will typically miss romantic dates and have a very uncertain social life. She often makes social appointments but her schedule is so variable she can seldom keep to her plans.

Like all private investigators, Laura has an advantage over the police in that she can, and does, interact with people from all walks of life, including criminals. Laura can go from having lunch with a career criminal to going to a charity event with the wealthiest socialites in Scottsdale. Although never comfortable in these situations, Laura always takes them in stride.

Laura is impulsive and has no problem boldly going into situations where she should probably think out a plan first. Because of this, she often places herself in dangerous or life threatening situations. Fortunately, she always manages to get herself out, at least so far.

Laura learned the practical aspects of the position mainly through on-the-job experience. Gina has been able to teach her about self-defense and firearms, along with some of the more technical aspects of the job such as lock-picking and surveillance.

Laura is very independent and this sometimes complicates her relationships with men. She can go for days without seeing or calling her boyfriend, but when she’s ready to see him, she wants him to be available for her.

Laura has constant money problems. She has bills she can’t pay and a car that’s constantly being damaged. When she’s successful in a case, the grateful client will often give her an impractical gift, usually valuable jewelry. Laura will feel it’s not right for her to sell any of the jewelry, even though it would help out her money problems.

Laura wants to have a long-term relationship, but only with one man at a time. She may flirt with, and perhaps even kiss, other men, but will never let it go farther than that. She agonizes about her relationships and is constantly questioning her feelings about every romantic situation she encounters. She has a healthy libido but will only act on it with her boyfriend or, if he’s not available, with her shower massager.

Laura constantly has an inner monologue running in her head, commenting on events happening around her. Fortunately, her internal comments seldom make it out of her mouth. This would be awkward since they are typically a little too direct to be polite.

Laura has the steady calm voice of an educated woman in her early thirties with a neutral Southwestern accent. She is hopelessly idealistic. She wants the world to be a beautiful place filled with happy people and often gets annoyed when it’s not. She has a good filter and doesn’t always say what she thinks. She sees the world with a constant sense of irony and it often comes out in her inner monologue and side comments. She typically isn’t mean or overly sarcastic unless provoked.
B.A. Trimmer Hi Maryruth! The sixth book in the series, Scottsdale Shuffle, is due to come out sometime in the spring of 2018. I hope you'll enjoy it!
