I'll give the advice that other writers have given me: just write! Don't wait for a person or publication to commission something from you. Write in your spare time, at night, in the morning, or whenever, and when you have a moment contact editors to build relationships.

Usually, I stand up from the desk where I'm writing and go for a walk. There's nothing like physical movement to help clear the mind.
