Sally Johnson Generally I write in silence, except for my dog snoring. Although I have heard background noise helps. I get easily distracted, so I try to eliminate anything that might do that. But I can't eliminate the biggest distraction of all . . . the internet.
Sally Johnson I love being a writer. To me it is the best job ever. I have always been creative and writing is a way to answer the question "what if." Writing is like playing with my imaginary friends.
Sally Johnson I was lucky enough to have a mentor, Becca Wilhite, who I met through a friend. She answered my initial questions and pointed me to a couple of FB writing groups. I went to a couple of writing conferences. Not only did I learn a lot in the classes, I was able to make friends and meet contacts that were extremely helpful. It always helps to meet an editor and be able to have that point-of-reference when you submit something to them.

Obviously, keep writing is also important. :)

And finally, I do not write my stories from beginning to end. I write them according to the ideas I get. If I get a great idea for the middle of the story, I write the middle of the story. It's easy enough to go back and fill in the other parts of the story later.
Sally Johnson I love to write. I look forward to writing. I am always thinking about my characters and my stories. It helps to figure out storylines, character's issues and everything and anything else. I am also always writing down anything I hear that I find interesting. Sometimes it's those thing that inspire my writing. Sometimes it is as simple as reading what I wrote a couple of pages before and then I take it from there.
Sally Johnson There were so many different influences for coming up with the idea for The Skeleton in My Closet Wears a Wedding Dress. I had heard several stories and also knew a few people who had gotten married and divorced after a short time. I chose to make Sophia young and divorced because it made her feel like she didn't fit in at BYU and the single's scene. I also wanted to capture the unique atmosphere of BYU.
Sally Johnson I am working on about five different projects right now! So many fun stories to write, so little time.
The Sequel for The Skeleton in My Closet . . . is going through final edits right now and then I will send it in to my publisher.
There is a Prequel to The Skeleton in My Closet . . . because we want to know about Sophia and Travis when they were married, right? The rough draft is finished but will have to wait it's turn to be submitted.
I have a stand alone novel being called "Highly Unlikely" for now that is also almost ready to submit. It's about two missionaries who return home from their mission to find out her mom is engaged to his dad. Surprise!
Sally Johnson I don't know if I have ever truly had writer's block (knock on wood) or at least the kind where I sit staring at a blank page. Since I don't write my stories chronologically from beginning to end, if I don't know what I'm doing in a scene, I skip to a different scene. If I am really having a hard time figuring out what to do, I call my "writing consultants" aka my best friend or my mom, and I talk about with them and brainstorm. That usually does the trick.
