Happy to be your friend on here, Mara. We share so many things, it seems: Edgar Cayce, art (me through fine art and writing), studied past lives and definitely believe in reincarnation. So glad we crossed paths. Can you tell what your religion was when you were 16 and dissatisfied with it? And how much research do you have to do for your books?
Mara Powers Hi! Thanks for reaching out. I was raised Catholic. When I was a teenager I was distressed by the ritual and lack of spirituality, love and compassion. I felt like it didn't practice what it preached. I was very abused in Catholic school by the teachers and other students. They didn't understand my sensitive nature. For a long time I had disdain for all religion. But I'm lucky to be in a family who are very spiritual about catholicism. I can't say as though I'm back to being religious, but I respect it now, and appreciate the doctrine from a scholarly perspective. Honestly, there are some Christian undertones in my work. As for the second part of your question, I have been researching atlantis voraciously for almost 30 years. One can say it's an obsession. Every aspect of my work includes reference to my research. In a way it's my dissertation.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Mara Powers Don't do it.
Haha. Kidding.
If you really want to be a writer, consider that it is a long and winding road that requires patience and unwavering commitment. It will change you.

What are you currently working on?
Mara Powers I am currently working on a television pilot with my writing partner, Justin Pierret. I am also working on book two in the Shadows of Atlantis saga. The working title is "Initiation."

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Mara Powers Typically I try not to struggle with it. I find it better to relax and wait for the inspiration to hit me. Sometimes I just have to go on a quest... I call it "searching for the muse." Sooner or later, it will come. It's best to avoid struggling, and self-judgement in the process.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Mara Powers I'm a very independent person, and I particularly enjoy being able to set my own schedule. Indulging in the creative process is also very enjoyable.
