Erika Cormier Write what you know. Fiction or nonfiction, write about what motivates you, what you are passionate about and don't ever set a deadline for yourself. Don't put pressure on yourself, but do write at least weekly. Its sitting down and actually writing that will get you to your goal, so you need to consider that "your time" and it should be fun and extremely motivating. If it is not, then you may want to reconsider your topic, characters or overall ideas, then brainstorm until you find what truly moves you. If it doesn't motivate you, you won't enjoy the writing process, so I advise to choose any topic or genre which gets you excited and motivated.
Also......I would say to ask yourself, "What do I want my readers to learn from my writing?" Every book leaves the reader with some form of a lesson or 'moral of the story'. Ask yourself what you want that lesson to be.....and use that as your guide before even beginning to write. Write out an outline or brainstorm in any way that helps you to see the picture of how you'll achieve the reader coming away from your book with the intended feelings, emotions and information/lesson that you hope to instill through your writing.
Erika Cormier I am working on a follow up book to my memoir that will be quite shocking but will also show a very raw, but an honest, sincere and realistic picture of depression and addiction, even more than As the Smoke Clears already does.
