Kate Braid I read - lots! Not always in the same genre I'm writing in. Reading doesn't just give me ideas for things I might want to explore, new approaches to old interests, but it plants fresh rhythms of language in my brain, in my mouth.
Kate Braid Being given permission to be a bit zany, not entirely "logical."
Kate Braid My best advice is probably the same as what was given to me - just write! Keep writing. Write the garbage, write the bad writing, just write! Something worthwhile will emerge - every time - because you'll move toward the thing you most need to write about.
Kate Braid I'm just starting a new collection of essays, these not on construction at all, but all the other things that have been going on in my life, including travel, aging, spiritual explorations, etc.
Kate Braid Staying alert to what's bugging me.
Kate Braid My last book, "Elemental," was a book of poetry. Chapters were Fire, Earth, Water, Air and (of course, for a carpenter) Wood. I got the idea when I was looking through unpublished poems, and realized they were mostly about the elements I'd been working intensely with for 15 years.
The new book, "Hammer and Nail" (out this fall with Caitlin) is a book of short notes, stories, observations and essays about that time.
