It's usually based on a particular story I want to tell. My books have been travel memoirs, and I love to travel, so putting the two of them together is an easy way to get inspired to write.

I think the quick answer is you have to want to tell a story, so don't be afraid to begin. It's a process, and a lot of ups and downs. And remember, writing that first draft is only the beginning. By the time you get to your finished manuscript you will have gone through so many edits and drafts you won't believe it. But in the end, you will have a sense of fun and satisfaction.

I write in spurts and take breaks when I do feel stuck. I'm not the kind to go into a room and plow through it for 8 hrs. Instead, I go to coffee shops. I'm a schmoozer, so I work a little, schmooze, work a little, schmooze. Sometimes I just plain take a break for a day, a week, a month, whatever it takes to get my marbles back.

The mystery of relationships could easily be a plot for a book. Relationships of all kinds, on all levels, move in twists and turns, and more importantly, move in mysterious ways unseen by the naked eye. Plot line indeed!

I don't tend to read a lot of books with fictional couples. Although I have read a number of Michael Connelly's books, and I get a kick out of former FBI profiler Terry McCaleb and his 2nd wife Graciela Rivers. They make a nice tandem.

I really like the combination of storytelling and creativity. It's another way to accomplish both of those, sort of killing two birds with one stone. I think that is the coolest part of being a writer.

While my current book is the 1st in a trilogy, and I have written and edited the other 2 books in the trilogy, I am writing a draft for a 4th, which I'll call a trilogy+One.

It came from a combination of being pushed by a friend of mine, a love of barbeque, and a love of travel. I had written a book on intellectual property, and idea that had been simmering for 15 years based on a suggestion by a research project advisor. My friend, who edited that book, kept pushing me to write another book about some of my travels. I finally gave in. Concurrently I got in barbeque debates with co-workers, and the rest is history.
