This sounds like a question for a writer of fantasy fiction . I enjoy those kind of books which transport you to another world. A fellow writer RB Watkinson, also published by Claret Press has done just that with A Cracked Amulet . I admire writers like Doris Lessing who created authentic planets but where the thrust of the narrative was to shine a light on some of the flaws in our society . My first novel Brushstrokes in Time was mostly set in China which I have visited. I am currently writing an Anglo Indian novel and have visited India more than China because we have family living there.

My non -fiction choice is 'The Invention of Nature' by Andrea Wulf (about Humbolt.)
My fiction easy read is 'The Coroner's Lunch' by Colin Coterill which is set in Laos . I have never been to Laos but I like getting a feel for other societies.

Oxford Castaways 3 was published last month. It is the end of a long series which I invented in 2007. I came up with a vision of an island called Oxtopia and decided to cast away interesting people . It's a bit like Desert Island Discs without the music. It was the BBC Radio 4 programme which set me thinking.

Life inspires me. I have had experiences in 4 continents and met extraordinary people. Writing is my third career and I have been deeply involved in my community. I have always been interested in history and in India and China so they are bound to surface in my writing. I think the subconscious is involved. Art is my window on the soul. I can only write poetry inspired by art.

I won't be charged with cultural appropriation for this one. The Anglo-Indian novel I am writing is partly set in Oxford in a world I have experienced and partly in India. Because my husband was born in India and we have family in the subcontinent I don't think anyone would dare critice me!

The whole world, the universe and invented worlds can become part of your world. I have had the privilege to write the life stories of over 150 people. Everyone has a wonderful story to tell. Unlike a writer I admire- RB Watkinson - I am not up to inventing worlds. What I know as well as having being taught it in genetics is that each human being is unique. So my writing is inspired by people I have met.

I believe chance encounters change lives and one such encounter changed mine.
