P.J. Devlin Different manifestations of memory of an event -- by different participants, observers, and a main character -- provide fascinating glimpses of characters' emotions, experiences, reactions and resolutions. Instead of developing a mystery plot from a specific personal experience, I would create a "mysterious" or "mystical" event, set in a place and time which resonates with me. I would plot story action through characters' memory of and responses to the event. Setting continues to be the foundation of my fiction.
P.J. Devlin Wissahickon Souls is a novel set in early 19th century Philadelphia. Its main character is a free-born black girl whose parents indenture her to a white-owned farm outside the city. As a native of Philadelphia, I've always been fascinated by the contributions of different ethnic groups to Philadelphia cultural history. The African American contribution is the first of a group of novels I plan to write, each one exploring different groups and their threads in the tapestry of Philadelphia history.
P.J. Devlin This is a difficult question for me because I don't specifically "get inspired to write." I love to write. I never seem to lack story ideas. I guess I get inspired by waking up each morning.
P.J. Devlin My advice for aspiring writers is to learn craft. Having talent and interest are necessary but not sufficient qualities for a writer. Learn the craft of story-telling.
P.J. Devlin For me, the best thing about being a writer is living my dream.
P.J. Devlin Hi. I don't get writer's block. Each day, I list the scenes I intend to write, then I go forth and write them. Some days the sentences come easier than on others, but because I take the time to plan my day's work, I'm never blocked.
