If you've written something, pay an editor to edit it and make sure the editor is reputable. Get it edited before sending it out, or self-publishing. Also, go to every writing conference you can find. They are usually inexpensive (unless you have to travel to them) and a great way to get educated about the industry and writing techniques from fabulous, best-selling authors.

At a book signing event in Maryland, one author was getting all the praise, and all the book sales while the rest of us sat around twiddling our thumbs! I asked her why she was the most magnetic person in the room. Eyes twinkling, she looked up from signing one of her books and told me she'd been in a car accident that had almost killed her and put her into a six-month coma. When she arose, her personality had completely changed. Instead of shy and retiring, she was now bold, talkative, socially assertive.
