Sue Thomas I'm inspired to write by ideas and questions. My first novel. Correspondence, 1992, was written to answer two questions that had been buzzing around in my head for a long time. 1. What might it feel like to be a machine? 2. Why was I obsessing about living closer to nature? It turned out that the answer to both questions was the same thing, which was a real surprise, and that understanding has informed my thinking ever since. My second novel, Water, 1994, came simply from a desire to write a novel about water, and to do it without repeating myself in terms of imagery etc. In that case, it became a book about desire, imagining, and motherhood. Another surprise! So I guess I'm inspired to write by a quest for answers that I don't understand until I reach the end.
Sue Thomas Having a voice. And having the time to find the best way to express it, no matter how long it takes.
Sue Thomas I'm currently writing about Southern California, why I love it, and how it inspires me. I've been visiting regularly since around 2002 and it has threaded through my writing ever since, but this is the first time I've allowed myself the pleasure of making it the main focus. Very enjoyable too! At the same time, I'm also working on an edition of my 1992 novel Correspondence. I'm adding an essay about how it came to be written and what it means to me now.
Sue Thomas I want to know how to live more healthfully with technology. I love my wired life and definitely don't want to give it up, but the screen is so alluring that sometimes it carries me away. So I've been looking at research about the positive benefits of connecting with nature and finding ways to enjoy both without feeling guilty. And, I think I've managed it!
