Randy McCracken As I studied through the books of 1&2 Samuel, I began to notice the theme of family. First, these books are primarily about 4 families. The families of Samuel, Eli, Saul, and David. Most of the characters in the books of Samuel are related to one of these 4 families. Second, I began to notice all the "family" language in these books. Words like "son," "daughter," "father," etc. occur over and over again. The language may refer to an individual family or family member, or it may be used to refer to the nation of Israel. This theme shows how individual families affect the fate of a nation, and how a nation affects individual families.

The other motivating factor in writing my book is that, although there have been many character studies on Samuel, Saul, and especially, David, no book has looked in depth at the other characters in 1&2 Samuel.
