What do you want for Christmas?
Richard Gilbert To see my granddaughter! And since we are going there for Christmas, I shall.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Richard Gilbert I wrote Shepherd: A Memoir because I wanted to explain loving and losing farms. A story with many threads and facets went along with that!

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Richard Gilbert Read and write. That's all there is. Classes, including online ones, can help educate and fire you up. All writers are pretty much highly educated, whether that's signified by diplomas or books read or continuing studies classes or writers' groups—or most likely by some combination.

Richard Gilbert The love of making sentences and of discovering insights in the process.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Richard Gilbert I read! If you can't write, read. Reading is about as important for a writer as writing—literature comes mostly out of literature—and can stimulate, inspire, unstick you.
