You create something out of nothing. I think this is the only profession that actually does that.

Be honest with yourself: is this really your passion? or just a hobby? If it's your passion, you must realize that your family may not approve because it will probably become your vocation, whether it pays well or not. Your duty is to do your best, ignore rejection or use it as fuel, and let the financial chips fall where they may. If it's just a hobby, enjoy.

I'm currently working on a novel, a trilogy based in Renaissance Italy. It's very Dickens/Dumas in tone, and will probably be entitled "Three for The City". It follows the intertwined adventures of a playwright, an alchemist, and an orphan as they each find themselves unlikely heroes to the people of a volatile Tuscan city-state.

Inspiration is just the original idea for a book, or, in my case, a book, screenplay, or song. Some of it comes from experiences that lodge in my mind and germinate for a period of time. Some of them, I have absolutely no idea where they come from.
