Keep writing. Keep your own counsel as a first priority, but learn from your mistakes and bad tendencies. Share your material with close confidents and friends, occasional outsiders. Know their interests and biases and how those affect their judgment. (I know for certain my British friends will help with correct grammar and usage but will put off by any character with an accent.)

I wrote a short story which began with Thomas and Zoltan in the university club setting. While that story was very different from FTMOW, the personalities of Thomas and Zoltan and particularly their interaction stood out and receive very favorable commentary from readers.
